Bloomberg no longer a Republican

Associated Press

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg left the Republican Party on Tuesday and switched to unaffiliated, a move certain to be seen as a prelude to an independent presidential bid that would upend the 2008 race.

The billionaire former CEO, who was a lifelong Democrat before he switched to the Republican Party in 2001 for his first mayoral run, said the change in his voter registration does not mean he is running for president.

"Although my plans for the future haven't changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our city," Bloomberg said.

The 65-year-old mayor has increasingly been the subject of speculation that he will run as an independent in 2008, despite his repeated promises to leave politics after the end of his term in 2009. He has fueled the buzz with increasing out-of-state travel, a greater focus on national issues and repeated criticism of the partisan politics that dominate Washington.

This is a breaking news update. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

I pray that he pulls a Nader and runs for President as an independent.

I totally agree. Indeed, this is shaping up to be one of the most fascinating parts of the '08 election. Arnold has expressed great admiration for Blumberg in a state that's sure to go for the Witch in a two way race between her and any pubbie. Blumberg, being the gun grabbing nanny stater he is, without the Witch's personal, ethical, and moral vileness, might attract many lib votes that would otherwise go to her because those libs couldn't bring themselves to vote for a pubbie. Hence, his candidacy could bring many blue states into play that the Witch could otherwise count on. Arnold, smart politician that he is, probably realizes this and, by supporting Blumberg, could be doing more service for the '08 pubbie candidate in California than any other way.

The only reason Arnold Schwarzenegger won election is that he is on the left coast, the most liberal of all states. Wackos.

This is bad news for Democrats. If he runs for president he will not siphon off any Republican votes. He will get the Nader votes.

We only have little “Puss Pockets” of liberalism, mainly along the coastal counties with the exception of maybe one. If we could just lance the “boils” of San Fransicko and Lost Angeles, this would be a hugely “red state!”

Hey, TD! Watch out who you be calling a wacko! :-)

SW is right. Check out this map, it demonstrates what he’s saying:

(unfortunately, some of us actually *live* in those “puss pockets”, lol)

Bloomberg will only hurt the Democrat Candidate. Or perhaps he’ll suck away the McCain vote (2-3%).

That said, every Dem that can’t stand Hillary will vote for the guy, as a “moral” alternative to the Rebublican (Fred).

A Bloomberg candidacy means a likely Hillary win (~75-80% chance or so). Anyone who says otherwise needs to stop drinking from the Kool-aid.

The record of incumbent parties who’ve held the White House for 8 straight years with major 3rd party candidacies is bleak.

Not to mention that Rasmussen and SUSA have both already tested out this race against Hillary and find out that Bloomberg takes votes primarily from Republican candidates and very little from her.

The new USA Today/Gallup survey shows Clinton's favorability rating shrunken to 45 percent - down 9 points from a similar poll taken last month, and a 13-point drop from a survey taken shortly after she announced her White House bid. More troubling for her White House hopes, her unfavorable ratings have climbed 12 points since she entered the race, and now stand at 52 percent - meaning more Americans now dislike her than like her.

Add in Islamic terrorism. This won't be a normal election. Bloomberg doesn't appeal to libertarians or conservatives, just moderates and the left.

There is a syndrome of that across the country.

My wife and I know several so called conservatives after retirement coming out of the closet and sounding like life long liberals.

We wonder if they lived a lie for decades and were too embarassed to admit that they were liberals. When they retired, they drop all pretentions of being conservative.

Bloomberg could put OR in play as John B. Anderson did in 1980.

I do think though that Bloomberg could steal off ten thousand or more wine-and-cheese-Volvo liberals in Portland and put OR in play. But we probably couldn’t impact much else.

Or just moles reaping the finances and jump in when they are needed to pull a Ross Perot.

A cynical mindset? Maybe.

A possibility? Definitely.

Bloomberg was never a Republican, so it’s no great loss. However, if Bush signs amnesty into law, I’m also leaving the Republican Party and becoming an Independent. My departure will not be noticed, and will also be no great loss, but it will be my little protest against a Republican President’s selling out the country.

I think those two were also running for NY Gov. in 2002.
