Opponents of the immigration bill recognize that the vote on cloture (maybe tomorrow, but probably early next week) will be key. Outside groups are scoring a vote for cloture as a vote for the bill. Cloture will succeed with 60 votes. Outspoken critics of the bill can be expected to vote "No."
Yesterday, Georgia senators Chambliss and Isakson announced their opposition. Given the size of the unpersuadable caucus that will support cloture, opponents are fighting uphill.
Based on talking with well-informed sources, this is the most accurate list I've seen of the Republican senators whose intentions are unknown and whose support will be needed in order to defeat cloture: Richard Burr (N.C.), Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), Kit Bond (Mo.), Pat Roberts (Kan.), Gordon Smith (Ore.), Thad Cochran (Miss.), Mike Crapo (Ind.), Norm Coleman (Min.), Kay Bailey Hutchison (Tex.), Orrin Hatch (Utah), Bob Bennett (Utah), and John Sununu (N.H.). (And opponents hope they can count on about a dozen Democrats).
I can’t see most of the names on this list voting for cloture..I’d worry about maybe a few..Sununu and Smith..
Both Sunnun and Smith are up for reelection in 2008. If they support this bill, they are goners.
Maybe the American people should do a Confidence Vote on Congress. Their rating is down to about 14% approval right now. But polls just don’t do it. We need a Concidence Vote on Congress. Maybe, just maybe, they would get it. Each state should have a special ballot....nothing on it except the Confidence vote.
What a minte, Sen. Crapo’s from Idaho - not Indiana.
minte s/b minute
I’d worry about Smith for sure!

Burr has already come out with Dole against the bill and will vote no on cloture according to what I was reading.
I was just going to say the same thing — she cannot even get the right state for Crapo.
Bennett and Coleman have indicted they will vote for cloture this time. Kit Bond is sponsoring one if those famous amendments that will give him cover to vote for cloture. I couldn’t believe it. Burr and Alexander are wobbly, with Alexander leaning toward cloture. Our work is NOT DONE.
Smith can be swayed. Contact his office even if you’re not in Oregon. Elections is what this guy is about.
bttt
Some of these will be talking out of both sides of their mouth (like Hutchison).
Closure is THE BIG VOTE . If that passes the bill will pass.
Many will vote for closure to give the 60 needed but be given a pass on the actual vote.
So they will vote for closure and then when it does not matter vote against the bill. It is a political game.
That way they can say “hey I did not vote for the bill”
It is BS
FYI.please see #10...
They’re both from blue states..maybe that’s why they’re worried..
Bingo..it is also why Reid wants so many GOP senator to support it..that’s so he can let a few Dems, like Pryor and Landrieu, vote AGAINST it..
That's why I tell every Senator I call that a vote for cloture will be interpreted as a vote for amnesty. In making this point, I end with the statement "The American people are not stupid." Inform them that we are hip to their tricks.
