Democrats tear into Fred Thompson By: Mike Allen June 25, 2007 04:35 PM EST

Even before his expected July announcement, Fred Thompson's all-but-declared entry into the Republican presidential stakes has prompted the Democratic National Committee to attack him as a potential GOP front-runner and to use his prospective candidacy to raise money.

Democratic strategists say Thompson's populist style and show-biz allure could prove extremely appealing in a general election at a time when voters are so down on Washington. So the party has launched a preemptive campaign against him that includes a DNC fundraising e-mail branding Thompson, "The inside-outsider."

"Remember the Republican culture of corruption?" the letter asks. "The revolving door of Republican politicians moving in and out of top political offices and Washington, D.C., lobbying firms? That's Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson. For years, acting wasn't the 'Law & Order' star's profession -- it was a hobby. In the real world, Thompson has made a fortune in a decades-long career as a Washington lobbyist. And just this month, as part of his role as the ultimate Washington insider, Thompson offered to host yet another fundraising event for Scooter Libby's legal defense fund. Thompson has been vocal in his support of Libby, saying that he would 'absolutely' pardon him. As he runs for president, he'll try his hardest to hide the truth from the American people. And we need to stop him. Support our efforts to get the truth out about Fred Thompson."

'Staunch supporter of Scooter Libby'

The DNC is preparing expensive postal mailings to follow up on the e-mails targeting Thompson, party sources said.

the biggest mistake Chris Matthews can make since Zell
Miller called him out with duelling pistols would be a face to face with Fred Dalton Thompson . God , what a slaughter that would be.

Primarily because the ignorant voter, the really wishy washy voter that votes for celebrity and that alone, Thompson gets that, because well, he’s law and order guy. People in California didn’t vote for Arnold the first time cause they liked a particular message, they voted for him because he was Arnold.

And there is a habit of electing the occasional celebrity, hell we had one as President, and he was one of the best we had. Now, I think we’ll have an advantage in that, I don’t see the Democrats nominating a governor. So far, only one is running and there is reason to suggest that he won’t be able to ride the hispanic vote to the nomination. On the other hand, we have 3. I honestly believe Giuliani is going to start dropping once New York is scrutinized, because well, Bloomberg is actually the first mayor of New York I know of in a long time to not be repeatedly catching hell at home.

Plus, one thing that most of the country doesn’t know about is Giuliani’s little power grab post 9/11. 9/11 was a tragedy, but Rudy’s reasoning in that was insane, and the minute that is hit on, he’s toast. He’s too authoritarian, and he also had a tendency to take credit for things that were not entirely his doing, I think Rudy drops off by fall time, and one of the third tiers comes in to make it a three way between Thompson, Romney and candidate # 3, who is not McCain or Giuliani.

insider-outsider is a good triangulation for F Thompson in the general election if he is up against Hillary...it won't be effective in the primaries against Giuliani or Romney, since they are both Washington outsiders...

How much money do you think Thompson can raise in Q3 ? He's got a lot of catching up to do...Romney will have raised another 15-20 million in 2Q and Giuliani will have another 12-15 million in the same period.

It is the right thing to do, so I hope he keeps that line.

The DNC will live to regret informing so many Democrats about Fred. It will serve to have folks check him out, and many may find that they like him better than anyone the Dems are offering up in 2008.

we will defend fred to the death

no other candidate can say that about their base

his defense of libby over the political prosecution is a point of endearment to the base

his determination to seal the border isn’t racist, it is rational

fred thompson can help make conservatives believe again

True, that is a general election strategy, however, none of the other candidates is able to articulate disdain for Washington the way Fred can. That’s valuable in the primaries as well.

I’m betting that he’s already raised over $10M. Early last week, the rumor was it was over $5M. I don’t think he’s far behind the others and I don’t think he’ll have much trouble keeping pace or even outpacing them.

Fred stands 6’7’’. I can’t wait to see him towering over Hillary on a debate stage.

You forget Hitlery puts her self on a very high pedestal.

"I'd love to see him tower over Ahmonajihad."

I had a bizarre dream last night that Thompson was touring the middle east and Ahmadinejihad kept trying to attack him.

America is still conservative. In fact, I’d venture to say about 50% of so-called liberals are conservatives that just don’t realize they are conservative. It takes a guy like Fred or Ronald Reagan to help them realize that.

I know a lot of Democrats, but I have a hard time finding any outside of a college campus who actually buy into the quasi-Marxist "progressive" philosophy of the left. The closest they come to it is on the health care issue, and it normally takes me a good 10 minutes to convince them that they don't actually want government medicine. Almost none will actually defend ideas like cradle-to-grave welfare or other forms of income redistribution.

Most of them want to be left alone by the government, just like we do. They've just been raised to believe that the Democrat Party is the one that wants to keep the government off their backs, while the GOP wants to shove religion and morality down their throats. The GOP, unfortunately, doesn't always do the best job of convincing them otherwise.

So yes, I think you have it right.

“Democrats Fear Fred Thompson”

(sung to the tune of “Don’t Fear the Reaper”
with sincere apologies to Blue Oyster Cult)

They thought their time had come
But their dreams are turning to stone
Democrats fear Fred Thompson
More than the Mitt, the Rudy or McCain?
I’m with Fred Thompson

Come on baby... let’s get the word out
Baby take my hand... Tell the world what he’s all about
We’ll take our nation back... You know I’m gonna shout it out
Baby Fred’s our man...

High taxes are done
Big brother is gone
Our borders and security
Will be safe for eternity...
borders and security

Men and women learning everyday... about borders and
security
Men and women learning everyday... how Fred will keep us
free
Men and women learning everyday... more can be like
they are

Come on baby... let’s get the word out
Baby take my hand... Tell the world what he’s all about
We’ll take our nation back... You know I’m gonna shout it out
Baby Fred’s our man...

There’s men who want to do us in
and others who would let them win
They want a world of sadness
And to own our very souls
The door was open and then hope appeared
The fear died and then disappeared
The curtains flew then Fred appeared
Saying don’t be afraid

Come on baby... And we had no fear
And we said to him... make our founders proud
He said I will to the gathering crowd
They had become like we are
They had shaken his hand
They had become like we are

Come on baby... back Fred Thompson

WEIRD. In my dream I was a member of his campaign staff (I think; I don't remember many details).

I love it! They got nothing on this guy! It's driving them nuts!

Can't say he's my first choice, but if it drives the liberal/DEM/moonbats crazy... I am all for it!

The average American voter doesn’t know Libby from the guy don’t the street. I often wonder how they select the people they poll.
