Democrats tear into Fred Thompson By: Mike Allen June 25, 2007 04:35 PM EST

Even before his expected July announcement, Fred Thompson's all-but-declared entry into the Republican presidential stakes has prompted the Democratic National Committee to attack him as a potential GOP front-runner and to use his prospective candidacy to raise money.

Democratic strategists say Thompson's populist style and show-biz allure could prove extremely appealing in a general election at a time when voters are so down on Washington. So the party has launched a preemptive campaign against him that includes a DNC fundraising e-mail branding Thompson, "The inside-outsider."

"Remember the Republican culture of corruption?" the letter asks. "The revolving door of Republican politicians moving in and out of top political offices and Washington, D.C., lobbying firms? That's Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson. For years, acting wasn't the 'Law & Order' star's profession -- it was a hobby. In the real world, Thompson has made a fortune in a decades-long career as a Washington lobbyist. And just this month, as part of his role as the ultimate Washington insider, Thompson offered to host yet another fundraising event for Scooter Libby's legal defense fund. Thompson has been vocal in his support of Libby, saying that he would 'absolutely' pardon him. As he runs for president, he'll try his hardest to hide the truth from the American people. And we need to stop him. Support our efforts to get the truth out about Fred Thompson."

'Staunch supporter of Scooter Libby'

The DNC is preparing expensive postal mailings to follow up on the e-mails targeting Thompson, party sources said.

Thompson showed signs of rustiness in Richmond earlier this month when a reporter asked him to name his greatest accomplishments in the Senate -- not exactly a hardball question - and he struggled to answer. "It doesn't always have to do with putting your name on a piece of legislation," he finally said. "There was an awful lot of bad legislation that I helped to stop, for one thing."

That's actually a great conservative answer.

If they want to hang Scooter Libby on him, I say let the DNC go right ahead. Every one knows the conviction AND the sentence was completely unjust.

Agreed. I think we hear too many politicians brag of expanding government. I rather hear one who felt Congress should pass fewer laws, not more. Good answer from Fred Thompson.

Yep. The Paulites and "progressives" are scared to death of Fred Thompson. The smell of fear makes me like him even more.

Yeah, I can't find too much wrong with that.

I've taken this whole thing kind of slow, never even watched-Law and Order-but the more I hear from Thompson the more I like what I hear.

Fred stands 6’7’’. I can’t wait to see him towering over Hillary on a debate stage.

Libby has about the same high unfavorables as Dick Cheney (57%)...being a Libby defender will not draw people “across the aisle”, as will be necessary if F.Thompson wins the Republican nomination...

I’m kind of curious to know from a scientific poll, how people feel about a Scooter Libby pardon. To the left, Libby is the only convicted member of the Bush-Cheney administration whose behavior had anything to do with the war, so in their eyes, he needs ‘punishing’. I wonder if the average American makes this connection.

Besides the whole "outsider" thing is a yawn. So Fred was a lobbyist, who cares really. I might want to know what causes or industries he was lobbying for but the fact that he was a lobbyist concerns me not at all.

But that's OK, DNC keep up the culture of corupption angle that should work real well with Nancy, Dirty Harry, DiFi, Hillary and Congressmen Jefferson and Murtha holding leadership positions in your party.
