In a recent conversation with a former high level intelligence operative of our government, I raised the possibility of terrorists successfully detonating a nuclear weapon within the United States. His response was sobering in its hopelessness.
First, he stressed how grateful he was that he did not work in Washington, DC, and that his family lived far enough out to survive the coming nuclear blast. When I pressed him as to why he was so sure that Islamic terrorists – with or without the help of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez – would eventually hit DC or another American city with a nuclear weapon, his anger boiled out.
He pointed the finger squarely at our politicians and our politically correct, left-leaning media, who, in his opinion, have “sealed our fate.” He spoke of politicians from both sides of the aisle who consider border security nothing more than a cheap tool to be used for their reelection and enrichment. He despaired about a media that not only gleefully leaks our nation’s most trusted secrets for partisan gain, but then willingly acts as a propaganda tool for the very terrorists intent on our total destruction.”

PALM HARBOR - Pinellas County sheriff's detectives Tuesday found a homemade bomb deep in the brush off Lake St. George Drive. Detectives were led to the spot, an area covered by thick, 8-foot-high brush and thought to be owned by Progress Energy, after receiving several tips Monday, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jim Bordner. At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, detectives found what Bordner described as a "crudely made homemade explosive device" 50 feet into the overgrown area east of Lake St. George Drive, which is near Tampa Road.
The area where the bomb was found is south of the Lake St. George subdivision at Shorncliffe Lane. But the explosive device wasn't near any homes, Bordner said, and no one was evacuated. Detectives cordoned off the area and called the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad for help. A 300-foot safety radius was set and after a loud "pop," law enforcement officials pulled out the device. Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter said her agency sent a bomb technician to the scene who "partially dismantled" the bomb.
Bordner would not describe what the device was made of or how it appeared to be put together. No arrests have been made and detectives are working to determine where the parts of the bomb came from.

Sudanese authorities find large quantities of explosives in Khartoum suburb

KHARTOUM, Sudan: Security services have seized large quantities of explosives in a suburb of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, and arrested twenty people for interrogation, Sudan's justice minister said Tuesday.
Police and security forces seized "huge quantities" of cylinders used to produce various explosive devices, 18 sacks of ammunition containing hundreds of bullets and four cylinders filed with explosive material, one of which was ready for use, Justice Minister Mohamed Ali al-Mardi was quoted as saying by the official news agency, SUNA.
The raid took place in Hatana, a quiet suburb north of Omdurman — one of the three town districts that form the capital — he said. "This is a huge and coordinated work. This might be a mere tip of the iceberg," al-Mardi said. He did not specify who the suspects were or what was their nationality, but said they were not deemed to have links to al-Qaida. Asked whether they could belong to a homegrown radical cell, he said : "All options remain open." The minister also said there were no signs that the explosives and suspects were linked to an alleged coup plot for which an opposition party leader, a former presidential assistant and several army officers were arrested last month.

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Tuesday hinted her administration might grant the demand of Muslim rebels Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for the return of their claimed "ancestral domain" when peace negotiations between the government and the rebel group resumes.
Arroyo made the announcement during the 16th anniversary of the Federation of Philippine Industries where she downplayed public fears of returning ancestral domain to the MILF in southern Philippines.
She said, "We have declared many ancestral domain regimes among indigenous peoples, I really don't see why anybody should be scared if an ancestral domain is declared for the Muslim people." The issue of ancestral domain is one of the crucial points in the peace talks between the government and the MILF.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “After the men stepped out of the car, Haugh saw two fist-sized pipe bombs in a bag on the floorboard. Each was wrapped with duct tape and had a fuse, police said. Police searched the car, finding masks and gloves and 15 feet of PVC pipe in the trunk.
Haugh asked the men what the devices were for, and the front seat passenger, identified as Aaron Spoerke, 21, of suburban Lake Worth, replied: “They are pipe bombs. I like to throw them into canals and watch them explode,” according to the police report.
Spoerke later told police that he and driver, Raymond Kramer, 22, also of suburban Lake Worth, bought the gunpowder at a local gun shop, fuses from a fireworks store, and used PVC from Spoerke’s job as a plumber, police said.
They built three devices, and detonated one before meeting up with the two other passengers in the car Wednesday morning, he told police. “

A proposed contract between Russia and Venezuela that could transfer thousands of sniper rifles to Venezuela has raised concern in the United States about the potential use or regional distribution of the weapons by the socialist-inspired government of President Hugo Chávez.
The rifle in question is the latest variant of the Dragunov, a long-barreled, semi-automatic design with an optical sight. It is derived in part from the much more widely circulated Kalashnikov assault rifle.
First manufactured in 1963 for use by militaries and intelligence agencies in the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact, the Dragunov and its clones have become one of the most lethal and effective weapons against American troops and their allies in Iraq.
Venezuela is negotiating a contract with Rosoboronexport, the Kremlin-controlled arms export agency, to purchase about 5,000 modernized Dragunov rifles, according to officials at Izhmash, the rifle’s manufacturer. ...
Because sniper rifles are specialized infantry weapons and not typically issued to large numbers of soldiers, diplomats and military officers and analysts said, a purchase of several thousand Dragunovs would not seem to have a conventional military use for Venezuela’s armed forces. ...Venezuela has long been accused of providing weapons to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, a large and heavily equipped Marxist group that the State Department classifies as a foreign terrorist organization. ...
Vladimir Farafoshin, a deputy director at Izhmash, said that the full order of 100,000 AK-103s had been delivered to Venezuela, and that Russia was negotiating the sale of “about 5,000” Dragunovs as part of a separate arms deal.

Experts invited by Georgia say plane from Russia

TBILISI (Reuters) - A plane from Russia dropped the missile which landed in Georgia last week, experts from the United States, Sweden, Latvia and Lithuania said on Wednesday after conducting an investigation at Tbilisi’s request.
Their report was issued a day before a Russian team was to start its own investigation into the incident, in which the missile landed in a field near a Georgian farming village but did not explode. There were no casualties.
The incident reignited feuding between Russia and its pro-Western neighbor. Last year, Russia cut transport, diplomatic and some trade links after a spying row but relations had been improving.
“An unidentified aircraft flew from Russian airspace into Georgian airspace and back again into Russian airspace three times,” the eight experts said in their report.
“The first in Georgian airspace lasted less than a minute. The final two passes into Georgian airspace lasted significantly longer and the unidentified aircraft went deeper into Georgian airspace.”
The experts, ranging from independent military analysts to defense ministry employees, identified the missile as the Russian designed KH-58.
“The Georgian air force does not possess aircraft equipped with or able to launch KH-58 missiles,” their report said.
Georgia wants to join NATO but the alliance’s constitution says a country cannot become a member if there are conflicts within its borders, and Tbilisi has two.
The breakaway South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions fought wars against Georgia after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Their declarations of independence have not been internationally recognized but Moscow gives them moral and financial support.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Moscow was sending its own investigators, including the head of the Russian air force, to work with Georgian counterparts.
“The Russian Foreign Ministry hopes that the upcoming Russian-Georgian cooperation will objectively clear up the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the ministry said in a statement.

Deadliest attack in Iraq to date (14 August/1 Shabaan) with death toll growing. If the local Iraqi reports are correct, twice as many were killed in these attacks as any previous bombing to date in the four years since 2003. It is quite possibly just a small preview of the Rwanda-style genocidal bloodbath that awaits all of Iraq. Had these victims been the majority Shia instead of the tiny community of Yazidis, all of Iraq would likely be disintegrating into utter chaos tonight. After four years of slow motion catastrophe, there is nothing left to keep Iraq from going past the tipping point of all-out nationwide genocide that all have feared.

Iraqi officials: Truck bombings killed at least 500

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — The death toll in the suicide bombings Tuesday in northern Iraq has risen to at least 500, local officials in Nineveh province said Wednesday. Iraqi Army and Mosul police sources earlier put the number at 260, but said it was likely to rise. 320 were reported wounded.
The Tuesday truck bombs that targeted the villages of Qahtaniya, al-Jazeera and Tal Uzair, in northern Iraq near the border with Syria, were a “trademark al Qaeda event” designed to sway U.S. public opinion against the war, a U.S. general said Wednesday.
The attacks, targeting Kurdish villages of the Yazidi religious minority, were attempts to “break the will” of the American people and show that the U.S. troop escalation — the “surge” — is failing, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mixon said.
The bombings highlight the kind of sectarian tensions the troop surge was designed to stop.
Al Qaeda in Iraq is predominantly Sunni, and Mixon said members of the Yazidi religious minority have received threatening letters, called “night letters,” telling them “to leave because they are infidels.”
“This is an act of ethnic cleansing, if you will — almost genocide when you consider the fact the target they attacked and the fact that these Yazidis, out in a very remote part of Nineveh province, where there is very little security and really no security required to this point,” Mixon said. Sunni militants, including members of al Qaeda in Iraq, have targeted Yazidis in the area before.
Brig. Gen. Abdul Karim Khalaf, an Interior Ministry spokesman, said there were three suicide trucks carrying two tons of explosives. At least 30 houses and other buildings were destroyed.
Khalaf said the carnage looks like the aftermath of a “mini-nuclear explosion.” More bodies are expected to be found.The U.S. military said there were five bombings — four at a crowded bus station in Qahtaniya and a fifth in al-Jazeera.
The massacre comes ahead of next month’s report to Congress by Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker on progress in Iraq. . .
