I work in healthcare and we have to face angry and sometimes violent people. We deal with these people the old-fashioned way - no one has offered us tasers for enforcing compliance or self-protection.
It seems to me like the police are the ones who are the weenies.

Using a taser on the street and the subject of ‘dynamic entry’ raids is seperate and should be viewed seperately.

Tasers give cops a less lethal option at a distance greater than one foot past their hand. The problem is that tasers are not currently in the threat/response matrix that would dictate when to use them. Once that issue is resolved, and it will be done in case studies more than in court, then we will see a better employment of tasers. The weapon isn’t the problem. The problem is a current gap in officer training.

For reference, my dad is a retired law enforcement officer who was a training manager and a field training officer with his department. We had this exact conversation.

There is no such thing as a “non-lethal” weapon. Even ones that are designed to be are lethal under the right conditions. Less-lethal weapons is a better name.

I’ll bet more people die from being tazed by the police than from being shot by them.

They do seem to be much more accurate with the taser than with their firearms.

In any situation, deadly force is either authorized by the situation, or not. If not, then there is no reason (aside from sadism or psychopathy) to use a taser.

Nets, adhesive spray, can be used as less lethal tools. Tasers, not so much.

I'll try to remember that next time I'm fighting with a crack head I just chased into an alley from a stolen car and my back-up unit is five minutes away still. Thanks for setting it straight

Not anti-cop, anti-over use of the stun gun.... the fact is the modern cop is too quick to pull the trigger on the stun gun 300-500 times per year per dept in big cities....cops never used their batons that much in years past ....Taser use goes up year to year...Years ago a cop would not pull their firearm when making a routine call....The stun gun is quick to come out...and quick to being used...I’ve seen it....My point (in post 6) was that when it goes wrong, it reflects poorly on all cops....

"If a cop can us a taser on me and call it “non lethal”, then I when I use it on a cop, it should be merely “resisting arrest”."

When you use it on a cop?

To get tasered, a certain amount of nitwhittery, knuckskullness and nincome-poopery is required on the the offenders part. I have never heard of someone sitting at home, minding their own business, reading the bible, and an Officer arrives and tasers them. One must resist orders given by the Officer, defy his efforts to control his scene, and be show that you are not willing to co-operate with verbal commands before your tasered.

I hope you have a similar standard before you taser any cops.

"In Gwinnett County, Georgia, a police videotape shows Deacon Frederick Williams being struck with a TASER five times in 43 seconds, just 4 minutes after entering the jail. At the time, he was handcuffed behind his back and in leg restraints. The 31-year-old Church Deacon lost consciousness and died. His last words were: "Don't kill me, man. Don't kill me." To date, no charges have been filed in Mr. Willams' death. "

I really don't see this as a liberal vs. conservative thing- More like human vs. animal. Maybe you can explain to me why any cop needs to tase a man who is shackled wrists and ankles. And how that fits your conservative viewpoint.

Never? You must be illiterate. I sure don't read much, but I remember the city of Boston paid out $600,000 for scaring a retired minister to death inside his own home minding his own business. You could go to the CATO institute and check out their statistics on police raids that killed innocent people. You could read the news and see stories where children and old people get tasered. These stories show up every week on Free Republic. If the police were subjected to the same legal standards as private enterprise, local governments would be bankrupt.

It would appear like the use of the Taser by the cops...is growing. It used to be hardcore cases. We are beginning to see more simpler cases where regular judgment is clouded and they automatically taser the nitwit.

I’ll predict the turning point here. You have a cop who stops some couple and the cop has to Taser one of the two...where upon the second individual Tasers the cop. The event will be video-taped, and then suddenly cops will want to remove the Taser from private-use....ONLY cops should have Tasers. Then we all wake up and realize the approaching mess.

Seems to me I’ve seen videos of old people not capable of putting up a fight getting tasered by cops.

Therefore, a cop wearing a tasergun, within taser range, would be probable cause for me to taser him...before he tasers me.

Well Im in the next day or two you can be within taser range of an Officer, and your self defined probable cause. Let me know how it all worked out for you once you make parole.

I’m speaking hypothetically here. I don’t own a tasergun.
