Your Monday morning coffee-snorter: Video of not-so-straight-talking John McCain claiming he “never” supported amnesty.
Quoth McCain: “The fact is that I’ve never supported amnesty.”
Depends on the meaning of never:
Sen. McCain, 2003: “Amnesty Has To Be An Important Part.” ” ‘Amnesty has to be an important part because there are people who have lived in this country for 20, 30 or 40 years, who have raised children here and pay taxes here and are not citizens. That has to be a component of it,’ he said. ‘How can we have a temporary worker program if we’re not allowing people who have been here for 30 years to hold jobs here?’” (C. T. In 2003, Sen. McCain Also Said, “I Think We Can Set Up A Program Where Amnesty Is Extended To A Certain Number Of People Who Are Eligible…” “‘I believe we can pursue the security programs and at the same time set up a system where people can come here and work on a temporary basis. I think we can set up a program where amnesty is extended to a certain number of people who are eligible and at the same time make sure that we have some control over people who come in and out of this country,’ he said.” (C. If this is McCain’s strategy for winning over conservatives–lying to their faces– it’s not working. Would you, could you?

It looks like from the talk out of Washington on Fox’s “Special Report” from the pundits tonight, we are being set up for a McCain resurrection.
They also talked of Fred Thompson pulling out if he comes in fourth place in Iowa.
I keep scratching my head about the whole scenario.
Have we been seduced into supporting a fake candidate to split our votes and enable McCain to come through?
Romney and Huckabee have been trashing each other into the ground.
Giuliani is pushed down and out.
Have the hands of McCain and the political insiders been at work lately?
Romney looks like the vote to stop McCain and the GOP establishment.
I would vote principle for someone like Duncan Hunter if I lived in Iowa, but the situation tactically at the top suggests McCain is on the march.
His record including amnesty cannot be ignored.
The MSM and others (Rush,FReepers) who’ve spent their last few weeks hitting Huckabee better find the forest from the trees and put out the McCain record.
He’s now emerged at the main threat in the GOP presidential race.
Fred isn’t going to pull out before South Carolina. I think the McCain uptick is temporary. He should be saying he changed his mind but like a good politician who is never wrong he tells a bold faced lie. I’m sick of it.
I’m Thompson all the way. The others are losers(not including Hunter and Keyes) and are only where they are now because they have been campaigning for over a year and still can’t close the deal. That is why over a third of the GOP still say they could change their minds.
I’m analyzing and speculating.
Also sincerely uncommitted with McCain and Paul being the unacceptable.
I think McCain may have gotten some promises in 2000 when he came in second to President Bush that involve the GOP insider apparatus being used to promote his candidacy in 2008.
I’m saying McCain was told like Bob Dole back in 1996 that he’s next in line.
I see flaws in everyone out there and their assets as well.
A senator would not be the best candidate nor a congressman.
That would leave only Huckabee, Romney and Giuliani in the pool as the strongest “outside the beltway” candidates.
I vote conscience usually but I understand the political considerations.
I’m voting for Fred because he is himself. He has flaws. He helped push campaign finance reform but so did the others. He is the only one speaking clearly and is unquestionably conservative and not apologetically so. The primary is about voting your conscience. I’d vote McCain before either Huckabee or Mitt. He has a more consistently conservative record than either of them. Plus they both supported Amnesty like ideas and one even employed illegals even after being made aware of it.
I believed that McCain would be tapped. It doesn’t look that way know. The media are just having fun playing with the Republican candidates. They know Mitt and Huck are dead men walking in the general election. They know what they can do to them and probably already have a strategy to take them apart. Fred stands up to the media and doesn’t cower in front of them. That alone is enough for me to vote for him.
Also he may not be a Reagan but he sure isn’t ashamed or apologetic for his country and he stood up to Michael Moore.
There is only one other who has did that effectively and that is ironically John McCain.
You link McCain and Thompson.
That’s the question in my mind.
Is Fred Thompson a diversion to tie down anti-McCain forces (Rush,FR,National Right to Life) so McCain can break through the crowd to win?
I think it can be said “there’s not a dimes worth of difference between them” when we look at the whole group of candidates.
After that you have to look at other factors and senator is a negative for both McCain and Thompson as far as the general election.
The panel has NEVER been for FRed. billy boy has always been a mccainiac. When FRed was on FSN, he called Fred and others to task. They don’t like their mistakes being shown - they want to show the mistakes of others (in their Beltway opinion).
McCain will issue an executive order outlawing “intense interrogations” if he becomes president. Khalid Sheik would still be sitting in silence. Worse yet, Obama will free the Gitmo crowd and give them taxpayer paid lawyers so they can sue America.
Rush's 'strawberries' take-off seems to be very apropro.
McCain is pretty arrogant now. With the power of the presidency behind him, look out.
McCain is an arrogant, amnesty loving rino. I really can’t understand how he is polling above single digits. I’m starting to think that GWB has really killed off the party of Ronald Reagan.
Nightmare: Presidential race between the Hildebeast and McWhine. I honestly don’t know what I would do - maybe just not vote.
