Please pray for my friend Heather (Update at #134)
Hunress | 1/10/07 | Huntress

Dear FReepers,

Please pray for my dear friend Heather. She has a rare cancer, and is having surgery in the morning to remove the tumor. Heather was diagnosed in October with stage three leiomyosarcoma, which is an agressive cancer of the smooth muscle. She has undergone radiation and chemotherapy over the last few months in an attempt to shrink the tumor, which is located in hip near her sciatic nerve. Her most recent MRI indicates that the tumor has indeed shrunk, but there is still the possibility that her surgeon may not be able to remove the whole tumor or may have to amputate her leg to do so.

Heather is married and has an eight year old daughter. She is like a sister to me, and is one of the strongest and bravest individuals I have ever known. But she is truly in the fight of her life right now, and she needs our prayers. Please join me tonight as I pray for Heather, her family, and her doctors and nurses during this critical time.

Thank you.

Huntress

That's a fairly good report after the surgery. Faster growing cells are more sensitive to radiation, thus radiation is more harmful to fast growing cancer cells than normal cells. Some follow up radiation might be recommended "just in case" the surgeon missed something. It's not fun. I had 3000 rads through my abdominal area "just in case". It does beat the alternative.

Father God,
We thank You for Your cleansing power to heal all of Heather’s body from top to toe. We lift her up to You for complete salvation and surrender to Your plan for her and Your direction for her and her medical team. We lift up her family for salvation, hope and positive thinking, so that they may surround her with uplifting messages and helpful actions.
In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen!

I spoke with Heather yesterday. She just discussed the pathology report with her oncologist. As it turns out, her tumor was not a leimyosarcoma, as indicated by the initial biopsy, but rather a nerve sheath tumor, which is typically harder to treat and is associated with a much worse prognosis. However, it was serendipitous that it was treated like a leimyosarcoma, because the chemotherapy and radiation regimen was extemely effective—the tumor was 90-95% dead when it was removed. This was a far better result than any of her doctors expected, and she reports that the oncologist was positively beaming when he told her the news. Heather will have to undergo some additional chemotherapy, but she and her doctors think it is well worth the decreased risk of a recurrence.

Since she lost much of the muscle in the back of her leg as a result of her surgery, Heather has also been taking physical therapy to learn to walk properly again. Her progress in this has also exceeded all expectations, and she reports that she is walking normally with the help of a cane.

All in all, Heather is doing amazingly well, and I cannot begin to express how happy and relieved I am at this news. Thank you so much for your prayers so far. Please continue to pray with me for her full recovery.

Brad’s Gramma, trussell, Salvation, could you please re-ping your lists regarding this update?

Admin Moderator, could you please further update the title of this thread to reference this post? Thanks.
