Certifying Parents
Wall Street Journal ^ | 3/22/08

Posted on 03/22/2008 8:02:47 AM PDT by captjanaway

In the annals of judicial imperialism, we have arrived at a strange new chapter. A California court ruled this month that parents cannot "home school" their children without government certification. No teaching credential, no teaching. Parents "do not have a constitutional right to home school their children," wrote California appellate Justice Walter Croskey.

The 166,000 families in the state that now choose to educate their children at home must be stunned. But at least one political lobby likes the ruling. "We're happy," the California Teachers Association's Lloyd Porter told the San Francisco Chronicle. He says the union believes all students should be taught only by "credentialed" teachers, who will in due course belong to unions.

and I think it is also polite and customary to not insult and ridicule people who think and live differently than you do. So BOTH of us can learn something, yes?

Please show me where I've EVER made that statement.

Why, it was just today!
Can't you recall? Here it is:

If it irritates you so much to see that homeschooled children are doing better academically than their public schooled counterparts

There you go, saying that homeschooled kids are better than mine.

Statistics may support this but it is still a slam on my kids.

It's a good thing, too.

I'd have you whipped, just for giggles.

Humble, do you even KNOW anyone who is homeschooled? Apparently not. You are making typical, broad, inaccurate assumptions about homeschooling parents and children that reveals your ignorance about what we do. College is the goal for all homeschooled families I have ever met. Working at a job where you ask the public, “Do you want fries with that?” is NOT the goal. Many major universities in this country have full-time recruiting staff that do nothing but go after homeschooled students, because they know how well they do with test scores, academic achievement, career focus, citizenship, and “thinking outside the box” as one Stanford University homeschool recruiter recently said at a conference I attended. Fortune 500 companies are also headhunting among the homeschooling community for some of the same reasons. They want creativity, and not cookie-cutter problem-solving approaches among their programmers, engineers and executives.

Not all of our children are “gifted”, but even the “average” or “delayed” ones do much better, because we individually tutor them every single day. They learn to think and reason in ways public school students AS A WHOLE do not have opportunity or time to develop.

There is a lot you should learn about who we are as a whole, before you make all these thoughtless, angry generalities about what we do for our children.

Priceless!!!! Psst, come closer - you don't need anyone to slam on your kids when you do it so effortlessly yourself.

Now, put your d*** away.

I have a theory on that.

Kid’s with married, involved, educated parents are going to do better academically regardless whether they are homeschooled or public schooled or private schooled. Since their aren’t many uneducated uninvolved parents trying to homeschool their kids, the stats are going to be skewed.

It’s sometimes annoying when a couple of the homeschoolers on the board insist that we’re abusing our children by sending them to school rather than homeschooling. Last I checked, it was still a free country and I’m allowed to educate my children as I see fit which is what we do.

i know what you mean... it's sometimes annoying when a couple of public schoolers on the board insist that we're abusing our children by keeping them home rather than sending them to public school... last i checked, it was still a free country and i'm allowed to educate my children as i see fit, which is what we do...

Very good point! Then it would seem that the resistance to homeschooling by the NEA and the government is due to the fact that those children are not subject to liberal indoctrination. It has nothing to do with credentials or achievement.

I didn’t say rich. Man, you people wonder why you’re considered so arrogrant and anti-conservative when you post this kind of crap.

show me where i said that you said, "rich." i did not, so you cannot... i am replying to what you said EXACTLY... you said for a family to homeschool, the family has to be WELL OFF FINANCIALLY... and this is absolutely NOT TRUE... just because i use logic, and just because i know that what you said is not true and i've pointed it out does not make me arrogant... you're posting crap by saying that i said you said RICH, when i absolutley DID NOT...

Can’t be you, cause you’re not being humble, and no gunner could act so blatantly statist.

It doesn't sound like you are bragging - just stating a fact.

But, those of us that send our kids to public schools can also take pride in their accomplishments. My younger child is the Valedictorian of her graduating class. She did it while being a Varsity athlete, a top 5 state ranked musician, and while taking 12 AP courses with a 4.0+ GPA.

We consider ourselves lucky also that we had the financial means to live in a good school district and the spiritual knowledge to keep her (and her sister) on the right path.

You won't screw your kids up. Good parents know instinctively what is best for their little ones.

Good luck - I'm sure s/he will continue to do well! It's a fun journey

You’re a homeschooler?

Is this what they mean by “self-loathing”?

Wrong.

"According to a report published by the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) and funded by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement, U.S. Department of Education, homeschool student achievement test scores were exceptionally high. The median scores for every subtest at every grade were well above those of public and Catholic/private-school students. On average, homeschool students in grades one to four performed one grade level above their age-level public/private school peers on achievement tests. Students who had been homeschooled their entire academic life had higher scholastic achievement test scores than students who had also attended other educational programs."

Disclaimer - this inbred retard used google to find this statistic by the ERIC. This inbred retard is NOT using this to arrogantly say my kids are smarter than anyone elses. This inbred is ONLY copying and pasting what she found on the internet.

I didn’t say *you* were arrogant and sorry if it came off that way.

It’s the same with any thread about teachers (good and bad), public schools, etc. Some homeschoolers come onto a public school thread and trash the parents who send their kids to public schools. We don’t care, we abuse our kids, blah blah blah. Like the libs, those posters don’t take into account that we’re not stupid, the masses they need to educate, etc. Homeschooling is fine alternative to public, catholic and private schooling. But it’s an alternative and not for everyone for whatever reasons.

I’m blessed to have a fantastic Catholic grade school and fantastic public high school my kids can and do attend. I’m blessed that I was able to attend college and grad school, have two master degrees. I’m blessed that my husband made enough money for me to be a stay at home mom for 13 years. I’m blessed that my kids are smart, athletic, kind.

I don’t shove any of my beliefs down anyone’s throat like some posters.

My oldest scored in the 96%tile on her SATs and is in all honors/AP classes in the public high school. She’s going to major in engineering in college. Is that bragging? She’s an accomplished athlete on a competitive high school team and could possibly have scholarship offers just for her sport. She could get a *free ride* for academics or athletics or music. Is that bragging? Her soph sister, the same. The 6th grader, not so much for academics but she’s a solid A/B student but rockin athlete in 5 sports. Youngest is like oldest two, academics and sports. And they attend catholic grade and public high school. And, they’re all practicing Catholics so far.

the point, their schools are good but their home life is good and the latter is what matters. They didn’t succumb to any *indoctrination* and yet still succeed like they will in college.

Homeschooling, public schooling, catholic/private schooling, isn’t for everyone which is why it’s so great we all have the freedom to choose.

see how that works?

It’s not a good thing for a thread to go into the “Smoky Backroom.”
