2,089,351 Reasons to Put Down the Keyboard After a 26 Hour Shift [FR status report]

Posted on 09/24/2008 9:38:37 AM PDT by John Robinson

Edited on 09/24/2008 10:19:29 AM PDT by John Robinson. [history]

Well, the good news first. After installing three very sweet machines and new networking equipment, FR is geared up for the onslaught of traffic we anticipate during this election cycle. All that is left is some tuning and bringing online another database server.

The bad news: I goofed horribly this morning and wiped the articles table, a file that stores crucial information for displaying articles.

Fortunately, the data is backed up. I'm working on restoring it, but it may possibly take the rest of the day to bring it back fully.

So don't touch that dial!

UPDATE: Restored a couple million old articles. Still working on the most recent, which need to be restored from incremental backups (very slow!)

John- I just finished a 48 hour major project implementatoin myself this weekend, so I feel ya 100%!

Once you get that restore done get some rest and take a break from even looking at a computer out of the corner of your eye for about 3 days! It’s the only sound recovery method :) I recommend deep woods, a tent, and a good book!

John,

Thanks for the hard work. We all haev those OPPPSSS moments...

Like ohhh deleting the entire contents of a file server share thinking I was in a local folder - OPPPSSSSS

Powering up a computer with the internal drive with its bare electronics grounded on a case. Can you say smoke? - OPPSSSS

Accidently auto logging off 300+ students from a student lab at the university and losing all of their work in progress - OPPPSSS

Thank you for all that you do. All the best in returning FR to normal functions. Glad it turns out it wasn’t the opposition.

I once (and only once) was in charge of updating prices, and downloading Medicare files for the clinic I worked at. I thought it went swimmingly, until we realized that I not only updated the new formula, but had accidentally deleted the entire price list from the year before. So everything came up as a $0.00 charge (multiplying the new fee schedule times the old one, which I had deleted = $0.00).

Thankfully our main server at the corporate office was able to reset it, but by the time that was done an entire days worth of charges had been wiped from the books, and posting had to repost an entire days worth of work. I was not the most popular person there, needless to say!

Was that the number of threads or posts?

Astronomical for us (I think.)

Thanks for all you do, John.

More coffee,,,,no.

Take a nap, get outside, breathe some fresh air. Shoot up some defunct HDs.

Contemplate some classic art.

Visualize the total destruction of the DNC, visualize the gnashing of teeth, the lamentations of the MSM and NOW.

Then return to carry on the good work.

dang John, take a break and have a nap.

Thanks for all the hard work - I know you may feel overworked and underpaid but never ever feel under-appreciated. We all thank you for the long hours and hard work.

No if you can just make sure you restore only the threads where I may have posted something witty that would be great!!

LOL

A big hug for you - you did a great job getting it back up and going.

If you haven’t crashed a system at least once, then you haven’t lived! :P

Let me ask the question that is weighing heavily on all of our minds-

Will we get back all the "Joe Biden will drop out Oct.5th and be replaced by Hillary" threads?

I, for one, have been worried sick about losing all those threads.
