Olympia, WA (AHN) - Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire has declared a state of emergency in the state after winter storms continued to bring frigid temperatures and heavy snow.
"A number of counties and cities are struggling to meet the problems posed by this month's onslaught of snow and winter weather," the governor said in a statement on Christmas Eve. "Snowfall has reached record or near-record level in 30 of the state's 39 counties."
"Many communities, especially in eastern Washington, are expecting as much as a foot or more of additional snow this holiday weekend. This proclamation will enable the state to respond quickly to local requests for emergency support and assistance arising from these new storms," she added.
Gregoire's announcement authorizes the use of funds and other resources in responding to emergencies. It also activates the Washington National Guard and the Washington State Guard. The governor also issued a 10-day waiver of limits to the number of hours truck drivers can haul bulk milk from farms to dairies.
"Dairy cows continue to produce milk, which must be delivered to the dairy for processing within strict time limits. The waiver... will help ensure the delivery of this important commodity during the continuing storm, and will help the dairy industry avoid losses of nearly $1 million per day if the milk is lost," the office of Gregoire said in a statement.
Bitter weather over the weekend delayed flights and closed roads across the nation as winter storms blanketed northern states. The National Weather Service issued a number of warnings for Washington on Thursday.
"Snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected along the east slopes of the Cascades by early Christmas morning," the agency said. "In the mountains... accumulations of 12 to 18 inches will occur... Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency."
You said — “Yup, wonder what the global warming crowd is going to say then Washington State is mostly under a 100 feet of ice and snow (In about ten years). Sad part is all the damn liberals will be moving south, that sucks.”
During the last “little ice age” (at the time of the last sunspot minimum that lasted for a while) this area was not under 100 feet of ice and snow. If you think that’s going to happen in about ten years (or even 100 years), you’re as crazy as those AGW proponents (Anthropogenic Global Warming)....
It doesn’t often snow in Washington, and usually never this much. That last time I saw this much snow, it was almost around 15 years ago.
That’s just Seattle (a city FULL of HUGE hills). Fortunately, the rest of the state has no problem using what normal people use on snow covered roads.
Also,
There is an article in the Seattle Times today blasting Mayor Nickels policy with regard to sand v. salt, as experts are saying that the sand does more harm to Puget Sound than salt would.
I was up at Fort Lewis in 1970. ‘Sure seemed enough snow for me.
Merry Christmas!
Isn’t the ocean, uh, already pretty salty?
We’re all gonna die!
Minor correction: It doesn’t often snow in the Puget Sound region. It snows like a bitch in the mountians every winter.
Only took me two hours to get my chains on.
So I went for a cruise, road was littered with 4X4’s kinda sideways, ya know!
I don’t care if you got 4 wheels, 12 wheels, or 99 wheels, you CANNOT drive on hard packed snow and ice without traction.
PS: my rig was fine, I even used it in a couple places to break up the hard pack by stepping on it and letting the chains chew it up.
True. But when it's 4 to 8 inches on top of the 4 feet already on the ground, then we're talking some serious accumulations. At least that's how it looks over on the East side of the state.
“Someone should have told her it sometimes gets like this in winter.”
Here in Spokane it is easily a 100 year event, record snows in record short times. Milk isn’t on the store shelves, city services shut down, driving beyond treacerous. The local Mayors all called for this decree, she did the right thing.
Ping!
That was nice of you, however, the EPA should be along any minute to ticket you, LOL!
I expected her to declare that only the Prius would be allowed on the streets.
Probably!
Endangering some kinda spider or something!
Lol!
I grew up in the Palouse and have never seen anything like what you’re going through. Another reason to live on the “coast”.
Well, you guys live up there....
Be safe and have a Merry, Merry Christmas.
Living immediately north of you in the Kootenays, I was relieved to see last week’s big dump miss us and hit you and Coeur d’Alene.
We just have our normal foot of snow, none of that deep stuff!
Merry Christmas to you and yours, anyway!
Say WA? Evergreen State ping
FReepmail sionnsar if you want on or off this ping list.
Ping sionnsar if you see a Washington state related thread.
lol, some people have no sense of humor. I’m no idea of how deep or how long this cooling period is going to be and neither do you. Certainly things could get colder then the last Little Ice Age, absolutely no reason to think that is the coldest things can get.
