Former DNC chief announces Virginia governor run [Terry McAuliffe]

Former Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe said on Saturday he intends to run for governor of Virginia.

After months of speculation over his plans, McAuliffe announced his intentions in a video posted on his Web site. In the video, McAuliffe said he will make his intention to run official on Wednesday as part of a week-long campaign kickoff.

The stops include town hall meetings in Hampton Roads, Bristol, Richmond and others, where McAuliffe will unveil plans for job creation, education and renewable energy.

"Over the coming months we will travel to every corner of the commonwealth to ask all Virginians to join our campaign to get the economy moving again," McAuliffe said in the video.

In November, the 51-year-old established his campaign committee, Friends of Terry McAuliffe, with the State Board of Elections, secured the services of strategist Mike Henry and began touring Virginia, but had not made his candidacy certain.

McAuliffe faces two other Democrats who have been active for nearly a year in an already contentious nomination fight to succeed Democratic Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.

State Sen. Creigh Deeds narrowly lost the attorney general's race in 2005, and former House Democratic Caucus chairman Brian Moran is also in the race.

"We welcome Terry McAuliffe to the race and we're looking forward to an open and honest discussion of how we keep Virginia moving forward," said Peter Jackson, a spokesman for Deeds.

In a statement, Moran also welcomed McAuliffe to the campaign.

"I am more convinced than ever that Virginians want a governor with a proven record of fighting for Virginia families and a vision for the commonwealth," Moran said.

“The RNC needs to nail this piece of garbage to the wall regarding his dealings with Gary Winnick’s Global Crossing vapor of a company.”

It won’t matter. Democrats are “in” in VA, now. The only way McAuliffe won’t be elected is to lose in the primary.

Goode’s district didn’t vote for the False Messiah. Goode lost because he overreacted to his Dem opponent and ran some ads that rubbed the folks in his district the wrong way. A lighter touch, and he would’ve won again. The seat should come back to us in ‘10.

25 posts and no viable GOP alternative is mentioned. The problem isn’t that MAuliffe is a “punk,” it’s that the GOP is devoid of any leadership within the state.

I predict he will win bigtime in the new and liberal dim stronghold of Virginia.

The Republican candidate has been decided already. He’s the current Attorney General, Bob McDonnell.

He has been elected state-wide and very few Virginia Republicans can say that today. I’m hoping Peter Pace will run against Jim Webb for Senate next time.

I would not have thought in 1999 that within ten years, VA would be among the most heavily Democrat states in the country, but the pendulum has swung, and Virginians are too conservative, too informed, and too-Washingtonian, to move it back.

Virginians are “conservative” in that they are slow to change directions. If the train is headed left, most simply hop on board for the ride and waiting for the “freebies”.

WV is still liberal too, but it is competitive at the presidential level but hardly anywhere else. I did not think I would live to see the day that WV went Republican for president and VA went Democrat, but it happened with the popular Oprah’s Choice. People are awaiting “change”, they think.

Sounds like Goode erred the way Mrs. EDole did in NC.

If Virginia elects this scum, that state is lost forever! I will even vote to kick the state out of Dixie. Come on VA, get back in the program!!! George Washington and Robert E. Lee could not imagine this happening to their beloved state.

VA is becoming like Illinois - top-heavy in its northern urban area, run by increasingly corrupt politicos known for their proximity to DC. Ugh.

OMG! I hope we Virginians are smart enough to send this CARPETBAGGER packing. If my fellow Virginians vote this dude in, we have truly bumped our heads.
