Can Pawlenty Win Evangelicals and Moderates (Unlike Palin and Huckabee)?
US News & World Report ^ | 7/30/09 | Dan Gilgoff

Posted on 07/31/2009 12:45:39 PM PDT by steve-b

It's striking that today's Associated Press profile of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a possible 2012 Republican presidential candidate, excludes mention of his evangelical faith and strong ties to the evangelical world. I was struck by the same absence in a recent New York Times Pawlenty profile.

How solid are Pawlently's evangelical bona fides? The pastor of his home church is president of the National Association of Evangelicals, the nation's largest evangelical interest. Last year, as John McCain struggled to win over evangelical leaders, Pawlently quietly tried to arrange a meeting between the Republican presidential nominee and National Association of Evangelical bigs, but to no avail....

Unlike prospective Republican White House contenders like Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin, Pawlenty doesn't talk like a culture warrior, which helps explain why Pawlenty coverage in the national media ignores his faith-based side. But can his less strident tone help him win independents in a way that Huckabee and Palin have failed to, while his evangelical side makes him a hit with the GOP's social conservative base?

Pawlenty has recently had a come-to-Jesus moment on global warming—perhaps literally.

I'm afraid the Minnesota evangelicals aren't the evangelicals that the Republican party must have to win presidential elections. And the evangelicals they must have in the south and midwest aren't overly concerned about global warming and sure don't support cap and trade.

Pawlenty will not win over the evangelicals in red states talking about global warming and advocating cap and trade. But if conservatives don't get their act together and settle on a conservative candidate early in 2012, Pawlenty is just the candidate the blue states might nominate while conservatives split their votes among several candidates as in 2008.

Yup. If Palin were so horrible as the media claims, she’d be the ONLY candidate they’d want the GOP to run in ‘12. They’d be clearing the field for her. But she’s the LAST Republican they want us to run. Remember, if the media is touting a Republican for office, kids, THEY’RE NOT SOMEONE WE CONSERVATIVES SHOULD SUPPORT. Why do you think they hump RINO squish losers like Pawlenty or toxic con-artist Socialists like Slick Willard ?

Your 100 percent right. Which is exactly why I believe that Sarah Palin will wait til 2016 to run. She knows with this media, she has NO chance. -----------------------------

And you expect them to be less hostile in 2016?

One hears so much about this elusive bloc of fiscally conservative, socially liberal voters that is essential to the GOP’s success, yet no one can actually find it, even when the GOP sets out one of these presumably attractive candidates as bait.

If this bloc existed in the numbers claimed, Romney and Pawlenty would be attracting much more unsolicited public and media interest.

People would be talking about them with the same enthusiasm that they did about Barack Obama before his nomination and election, and the way they do about Sarah Palin now.

The media would be enraptured by the (Pawlenty, Crist, Romney, etc.) phenomenon. They just wouldn’t be able to stop talking about him (or her), good or bad.

People don’t want the magical, mystical, middling muddler. They want the personality. Like it or not, Barack Obama was The Personality, and regardless of ideology, The Personality will almost always beat The Safe Choice.

Sarah Palin is The Personality today, just as Barack Obama was from the moment of his Senate election.

The Democrats had a passel of safe candidates—Edwards, Vilsack, Bayh, Warner, Richardson—but the Democrats didn’t tie themselves up in knots trying to pass one of them off as the inoffensive moderate the needed to sweep to victory in 2008. Had they done so, they would have demoralized their own base and thrown away a winnable election.

Well Steve, it looks like you’ve had your ass handed to you once again, so I’ll just say that Pawlenty has all the charisma and appeal of a mashed potato sandwich, minus the salt.

The only conservative politicians in Minnesota are moderate democrats. Pawlenty was a moderate democrat and changed party affiliation so he could run for office outside the democrat political machine. How do you spell RINO???

In Pawlenty’s favor he does like the military and visited the Minnesota National Guard unit stationed in Kosovo a couple years ago, shortly after Kosovo declared independence.

The media wanted McCain BADLY to win the nomination, because they knew against Obama, McCain stood NO chance of winning. So they propped up McCain, saying what a wonderful man he is, I remember the press coverage for McCain during the primaries, boy they kissed his ass. When he won the nomination, Obama was already getting the drapes for the White House ordered, but when McCain chose Sarah, the media did not see that one coming, they were stunned, they thought “Oh My God, McCain might actually win” so they did whatever it took to destroy her. Remember this, the media loves picking our candidates, they pick them, the pick the ones who are the least threat to their agenda, prop them up, say how great they are, then when they are nominated boy oh boy do they bring them down

The media tends to, every 8 years, change. I’m not saying wait eight years, but just watch, the GOP is already starting it, they want Romney as their guy and they will fail miserably because of it. The media will say what a great guy Romney is and then once he gets that nomination BANG, the media will sworn in and bring up RomneyCare and every other thing he has ever done in his life that will make him look bad. You really think the media wants Obama to lose in 2012, they are already working on his campaign

If by that you mean they get continually worse, I agree.

Concerning Sarah, I have seen nothing, and I mean nothing that would lead me to believe she has the same disease as the rest of the GOP crowd of sticking her finger in the wind and strategerizing over principal over any issue.

She's principled and a fighter, not a chance in hell will she wait.

If she does, she'll lose a lot of supporters.

I want her to run and BADLY, but it is up to her. I think she will campaign for Conservative candidates in 2010 and see what happens. If Sarah wants the nomination she’s got it. I will do whatever necessary to help get her into the White House. My greatest joy in life would be going to her inauguration in 2013, but after all, it is her decision, and I think soon enough we will all find out what her decision is

Title — Can Pawlenty Win Evangelicals and Moderates (Unlike Palin and Huckabee)?

Ummm..., I think one sign of whether someone is thinking about running for the Office of President of the United States in the future — is — whether they talk about the “Obama birtch certificate” issue or not... :-)

Anyone who mentions that Obama needs to show his birth certificate to the public and is not a natural-born American citizen — is obviously not running for President... LOL...
