RED ALERT: White House Has Secret Plan To Harvest Personal Data From Social Networking Websites
National Legal and Policy Center ^ | August 31, 2009 | Ken Boehm

Posted on 09/02/2009 3:38:34 AM PDT by PowerPro

NLPC has uncovered a plan by the White House New Media operation to hire a technology vendor to conduct a massive, secret effort to harvest personal information on millions of Americans from social networking websites.

The information to be captured includes comments, tag lines, emails, audio, and video. The targeted sites include Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr and others – any space where the White House “maintains a presence.”

In the course of investigating procurement by the White House New Media office, NLPC discovered a 51-page solicitation of bids that was filed on Friday, August 21, 2009. Filed as Solicitation # WHO-S-09-0003, it is posted at FedBizzOps.com. Click here to download a 51-page pdf of the solicitation.

While the solicitation specifies a 12-month contract, it allows for seven one-year extensions. It specifies no dollar cap. Other troubling issues include:

extremely broad secrecy terms preventing the vendor from disclosing to the public or the media what information is being captured and archived (page 7, “Restriction Against Disclosure”)

wholesale capturing of comments by non-White House staff on publicly accessible sites

capturing of content of any type (text, graphics, audio, or video)

capturing of comments by both Obama critics and supporters, with no restriction as to how the White House would use the information.

This is the third controversy involving the White House internet operations in less than a month. First, Obama’s New Media operation asked supporters to send information about critics of the White House health care effort to a White House email. This provoked a storm of criticism and the White House retreated. Then large number of people complained of getting email spam from the White House supporting the President’s health care position. Again the White House was forced to back down.

If I leave out "rich" can I say "ditto?"

Feel free to enhance to. I am sure there are other things a Community Organizer in Chief would not like about a garden variety American.

BTW - "rich" anymore to me means that you pay income tax.

WHY IS ANYONE SURPRISED????? THIS IS THE COMMUNIST LINE. THESE PEOPLE ARE COMMUNISTS. STOP THE SOCIALISM CRAP. THEY ARE RUNNING PURE 100% THE COMMUNIST LINE!!! Yesterday, my wife and I watched an old 1962 movie on DirectTV. It was about a group of people digging a tunnel out of East Berlin and into the West. The flight for freedom. I told my wife, “and these stupid ass holes here vote TO HAVE THIS TYPE OF CRAP!!! for free stuff.” I spent 10 of my 20 years in the Army in Germany. I had one tour patrolling the East-West border. IT WAS REAL. It was not made up. People better get a grip on life or they are going to turn this nation into a second East Germany!

You know, my biggest concern is this administration legalizing the illegals before 2010 in order to neutralize the conservative vote.

You know if any of us have a profile in these networks share this article. Let everyone know the Control Freak Rats at the White House are watching.

We are slowly being converted to Socialism/Communism. We the people still have the power, and need to expose this.

“What is difference of this and Nixon’s break in at the Watergate ?? Did Nixon have to resign ?? Does Obama need to resign ??”

The difference?? Nixon had a hostile Congress running the investigation.

NLPC is very reputable. Our family foundation has been giving to them for years. They are much like Landmark Legal Foundation(protecting the constitution). This is very disturbing.

(snip)
“The contractor shall provide the necessary services to capture, store, extract to approved formats, and transfer content published by EOP on publicly-accessible web sites, along with information posted by non-EOP persons on publicly-accessible web sites where the EOP offices under PRA maintains a presence, throughout the term of the contract.... The contractor shall include in the information posted by non-EOP persons on publicly-accessible web sites where the EOP maintains a presence both comments posted on pages created by EOP and messages sent to EOP accounts on those web sites. Publicly-accessible sites may include, but are not limited to social networking sites. The contractor shall provide a user-friendly way of organizing and searching captured information...

...Capture of comments and publicly-visible tags posted by users on publicly-accessible websites on which an EOP component subject to the PRA maintains a presence. Vendor must be able to either:
(i) Capture all comments posted to a list of websites provided to vendor; or
(ii) Capture a sample of comments posted to a list of websites provided to vendor, according to a sampling methodology that will be provided to vendor and approved by EOP.” (end snip)

I could not get on the NLCP site this morning(hopefully it is just overloaded with traffic). Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for insight into NLPC- I wasn’t sure. I’ve been trying since I pinged you to this, still can’t get on their site.

I have forwarded the links to some friends in D.C....we’ll see what they discover.

"Why" you ask?

Doesn't it bother you that they are sucking information out of all these public web sites to archive it under the guide of the Presidential Records Act? Anything you post about the president will be stored by the government forever?

You say "nothing was said or done." Take a look at Page 2 of the RFQ:

Summary: Currently, the Government team is capturing the data and content both programmatically (via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) from social networks) and manually (through daily screen shots). EOP requires a provider to ensure we automatically capture this content in a scalable, efficient and reliable manner.

The program is already in operation! They are using legions of little Dem interns to take screen shots of web sites that offend them.

I'll bet the Terms of Use of the web sites specifically prohibit this activity, too.

This has a colossal stink on it.

"People better get a grip on life or they are going to turn this nation into a second East Germany!"

I toured some of the former Warsaw Pact countries after the Berlin Wall fell. One of these countries -- Romania -- had been subjected to one of the foulest, most oppressive of the communist governments. The folks there I spoke with said Ceausescu would plant Securitate agents in public places to monitor conversations. Anyone who'd voiced even so much as a hint of protest was arrested and often never heard from again. It's not a leap in logic to imagine this occurring in this country as well, especially with current technologies, if the 0bama regime remains in place.

These people are intent on RULING, not GOVERNING. They HAVE to be restrained by a tide of Congressional changes in 2010 and defeated in 2012.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are treating comments made by non-PRA personnel on sites on which a PRA component has a presence as presidential records, requiring them to be captured or sampled.
Holy ****! So they are saying since by law they have to record everything that is 'sent to the whitehouse' and since the whitehouse has a facebook page (and the others) then just to be safe they will try to record everything said by everyone everywhere on the whole site.

My husband retired after 21 years, and he gives a similar perspective.

When he was patrolling the Berlin Wall, he actually went into East Berlin. I don’t know if it was more than one occasion, or what the purpose was, but it was under orders with permission from East Berlin.

His mother asked him to look into visiting relatives that she had in East Berlin. He checked into it, and was told that technically it could be arranged, but it would cause them a world of trouble if he did.

When the wall came down, it was very personal for him.

He has no patience (and neither do I) for rainbow farting liberals who travel the world as civilians, and pretend to speak for the military they’ve never been near except to pose for misleading photos. They don’t have a clue.

“Who is the National Legal and Policy Center?”

The National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group that monitors and reports on the ethics of public officials, supporters of liberal causes, and labor unions in the United States. Among the NLPC’s more high-profile targets have been Reverend Al Sharpton, Reverend Jesse Jackson, U.S. Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY), U.S. Representative John Murtha (D-PA), U.S. Representative Alan Mollohan (D-WV), Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) (while she was First Lady), Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). The Center files complaints with government agencies, legally challenges what they view as abuse and corruption, and publishes reports. For its efforts, the NLPC has been praised by such media personalities as Rush Limbaugh. The current president is Peter Flaherty. The NLPC is described as conservative in nature.[1]

According to the Center’s mission statement, it:

“promotes a single standard of ethics in public life through research, education and legal action. We do not believe that ethics are advanced through more laws or ‘better guidelines,’ even as existing ones are ignored. We don’t believe the problem is with too few laws, or with too much freedom, but with men and women. We believe the missing ingredients are character, morality and common sense. We recognize that the bigger the government, the more opportunities for corruption; and the more intervention in the economy, the more reason for special interests to seek influence. We believe that the best way to promote ethics is to reduce the size of government.”[2]

The NLPC was founded in 1991 “to promote ethics, and to give the Code [of Ethics for Government] the visibility it deserves.” It currently operates four projects: the Government Integrity Project, the Legal Services Accountability Project, the Organized Labor Accountability Project, and the Corporate Integrity Project.
