Horowitz vs Frum: He’s Wrong About Glenn Beck and Apparently Can’t Handle My Side of the Debate
David Horowitz's NewsReal Blog ^ | September 26, 2009 | David Horowitz

Posted on 09/26/2009 11:08:16 AM PDT by HorowitzianConservative

frum_david For reasons best known to himself, David Frum has decided to suppress my side of the debate on his website. Thus my reply to his latest post (which follows below) doesn't appear on his website.

I agree with you David that this dialogue is getting more focused, and I find it much more pleasurable (and hopefully informative) as a result.

There are two issues here. One is a remarkable conservative outburst against the broadcaster Glenn Beck which includes you, Mark Levin and Pete Wehner among others, and which collectively wishes for his early self-destruction. The message from the three of you is that for the good of the conservative cause he should be silent -- and the sooner the better. Wehner expresses the judgment I detect in all three of your blasts in this sentence: “The role Glenn Beck is playing is harmful in its totality.” (http://www.commentarymagazine.com/blogs/index.php/wehner/100152) More than anything else, it is this that I am reacting to. I think this attitude is wrongheaded, absurd, destructive to the conservative cause and a blatant contradiction of the “big tent” philosophy which you otherwise support.

I have always listened to Horowitz because he has an unerring sense of tactical politics from his years in the radical Left. I get his points about the importance of what Beck is doing, but....to say that Obama is preferable to McCain is just plain nuts. It smacks of the Bill O'Reilly "I'm not a partisan, I'm a man of the PEOPLE" self-promotional school of punditry. I have to side with Levin on this one.

Undeniably true analysis with Horowitz's usual laser-beam ability to get to the heart of an issue:

The battle to stop Obama from ramming through a socialist health care system is one that Sarah Palin is leading. That’s the fact. If you don’t want Obama care, she’s the most potent force standing in its way. Do I think that government rationing of health care leads to the equivalent of “death panels?” Of course they do. And calling them that – even though at this stage they’re more of a goal than a reality – was brilliant politics. The Republican Party needs more of this not less.

It's a matter of style, not content.

Hannity knows very well that Beck's rhetorical style, right down to hand signals, is classic BISHOP SHEEN.

For those of you who have probably forgotten who he was, here he is in several of his most typical poses ~ just like the ones Glenn Beck uses:

So, what is it Hannity doesn't like about Roman Catholic Bishops? I could not begin to answer that ~ having to have worked in America's second most Catholic institution (next to the Catholic Church itself), the Postal Service for 38 years, I have heard so many things ~ terrible things ~ from Catholics. So many have their pick of undesirable characteristics to point to, so there we have it. (BTW, I watched Sheen as a kid, thought he was great, and I regularly catch reruns with the in-laws who are Catholic ~ and even with those who are Baptist, or Buddhist)

The Jewish guys in the crowd frequently have a visceral dislike of RC imagery, and Fur Shur, those bishops do have a bit of it, and even without a bishop's robes, Glenn can make you think he's wearing something on top of his suit.

I can only imagine Horowitz does not suffer from that "learned at home" dislike of RC bishops because, alas, his folks were Commies and they had a lot more hatreds than of mere RC apparatchiks! Not so with the other guys ~ they should look within their own hearts to see if this is so ~ I can't speak for them of course ~ but I suspect (based on other encounters of a similar kind) that it is so to one degree or the other.

Glenn probably ought to tone down his style a tad to make our own quasirino Conservative wing more comfortable ~ if he really wants to do that.

Frankly, I don't care one way or the other. Just so long as its more disturbing to the Leftwingtards I say to all these guys that the proud man counts his newspaper clippings, the humble man his blessings, so thank God they don't pay me for this stuff.

I had no idea Beck had used Levins qutoes. I like all but Bill O’Reilly.

You give credit where credit is due.

The difference between Obama and McCain are quite simple ~ Obama is a face man, an employee of a cabal of politicians and multibillionaires out to steal America ~ all he has to do is sound good. They tell him what to say.

McCain is bright enough to foment an intention on his own ~ and his first order of business, as always, would be to crush the First Amendment.

Obama's people (his bosses) don't care one way or the other ~ they seek raw power.

Imputing motive to Obama is always going to be wrong ~ he's just not up to it.

Hannity has never given me that impression, and Fur Shur, if those were his intentions I would have picked up on it long ago.

Now, put down the hard likker ~ it's Saturday afternoon, plenty of college football to watch, and get that anxiety out of your system.

The reasons are well known to everyone: Frum is a gonadless weasel

I think the goal of many supposed "conservatives" is to maintain the PRETENSE that there is opposition to Socialism, while being very careful to never actually rock the boat. By doing so, they can continue to get invited to the "best" dinner parties.

you’re right that Horowitz never stuck a chord with the genreal public — too intellectual, to brainy, too old, voice at wrong opirtch (not for me, for them).

Beck is a natural populist and DH must realize this.

“Hannity . . . has a list of a half-dozen countries for America to invade”

Where in the world are there problems?

Most of those problems involve Islam.

Islam is the Problem.

I will side with Beck, hands down. Hannity is a RINO.

That is why I don’t care for Hannity.

David is very intellectual. He is on our local radio every week. David likes Beck because Beck is very able to appeal and teach people about how the left works.

Cut the ego stuff folks. This whole thing is much bigger than talkradio.

Bingo, they all have a role, difference is Beck is willing to go out on a limb, far beyond the others. Perhaps that is because he isn’t a republican.

For whatever reason Horowitz has never struck a chord with the general public.

Horowitz and Thomas Sowell are two great conservative thinkers and writers who suffer from a similar affliction - they are poor interviews. To many ers, ahs, uhs between their insightful comments. It is almost painful to listen to them.

No one has stopped Mark from doing what Beck does. Mark cannot do what Beck does. Mark is abrasive to most, my husband likes his book but cannot listen to him.

Mark should jump on with Beck and take the limelight by being someone working for the cause rather than letting ego trump all.

This boils down to one thing, we all need someone to rally behind.

Right now these radio talkers, if they really are fighting (I have my doubts), will put it aside when someone pops up who needs all of their support.
