Merced (CA) man sees Virgin Mary in found rock
The Modesto Bee ^ | Friday, Oct. 16, 2009 | Brandon Bowers

Nobody can say why the Virgin of Guadalupe would appear on a hunk of rock formed millions of years before the birth of Jesus.

But David Nunez says the image is unmistakable — a bluish-black stain on the football-sized rock outlines what looks like the Holy Mother.

Nunez's father found the partially buried boulder while looking for landscaping rocks in an Oakdale orchard. Nunez and his father, Jesus — both Catholics from Merced — insist that it's hard to dispute that the image resembles the famous image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Merced resident David Nunez holds a rock with a pattern that he says looks like an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, shown at right in a 16th-Century painting. Nunez's father found the rock while searching for landscaping materials in an Oakdale orchard.

Friends have called it a miracle.

I think he should keep looking. At least he is looking for a virgin in the right place, under a rock.

Question: How does anyone today know what Mary looked like?

When I was a kid I used to find animals in clouds. Rocks are equally random and there are a lot more of them.

"Merced (CA) man who sees Virgin Mary in a rock he found, has been sipping on grandma's hooch!"

It is silly things like this that makes us Christians look foolish to the world. I don't mind looking foolish for my love and devotion to Christ and everything the Bible says, but this is not of God, and as a christian we need to say away from the foolish things that men try to say are of God.

Question: How does anyone today know what Mary looked like?

The image of Mary that was on Juan Diego's tilma (the one shown in this post) was "painted" through a miracle, so I would imagine that's a pretty good rendering of how Mary looked.

“Friends have called it a miracle.”

I think he and his friends have a pretty low standard for what constitutes a miracle.

I would call this a Sacramental, not a miracle.

A Sacramental is something that reminds you of your Faith and reminds you to live your Faith.

I’d suggest that the publicity will be a call for many Catholics to pray for America (from the tip of the North to the tip of the South).
