Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer.

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack.

I’ve been pondering how blase all of us have been over the recent spate of jihadis nailed in the US.

They exemplify the varied nature of jihad - imams, US converts, professionals, students, long time US residents......

Any bets on if these guys turn up with connections to Pakistan? Like so many of the busted jihadis....

I was working on the Acadamy in CO Springs this summer. They had civilians at the gate with side arms and AF people at the entrance to the cadet area with M-4s. Very cool place to work.

Just spoke to a buddy of mine in TX who's ex-Army:

"I'm watching FOX and they have no idea as to what has happened. Anything from one flipping out to terrorists is being suggested.

Something to keep in mind. I was there recently. The base itself, the cantonment area, is huge, its like a small city, has nine schools. There's over 50,000 troops and families there, although some are deployed.

I can imagine that we will hear all sorts of speculation, assumptions, and rumors from the media before what we find out what happened.

They are saying now one shooter is wounded and captured and one at large."

I agreed, most people don't understand, Ft. Hood is humongous. It's running most of a Heavy Corps out of the place. You simply cannot search everyone and thing going in or out. The only way that's going to remotely happen is threatcon Charlie or Delta, and that'll mean a plain lockdown. That cannot be maintained indefinitely for obvious reasons.

Um, there doesn't appear to be a source on the M-16s. That means they could be AR-15s. Also, based on the media's record on firearm identification they wouldn't know a Red Ryder from a Barrett.

Yes, every time Duh Media says M-16s, makes me think 'or AR-15s'.
