Army to Test ‘Game Changing’ Gun in Combat

ABERDEEN TEST CENTER, Md. -- The Army is set to send its high-tech "counter defilade" weapon to the war zone in the next few months, the first real-world deployment for the much-anticipated XM-25 Individual Airburst Weapon.

Officials announced May 5 that a group of Army Special Forces Soldiers will take the weapon with them to Afghanistan sometime this summer.

During live-fire demo here, Soldiers shot the Heckler & Koch-made XM-25's high-explosive rounds through the window of a simulated building, showering "enemy" mannequins inside with lethal metal fragments.

Afghanistan veterans who fired the weapon for the first time this week predicted it would be a "game changing" weapon, a gun that can engage Taliban insurgents using distant ridge-tops, thick mud walls and tree lines as cover.

I wouldn’t mind a few AA-12 automatic shotguns.

Forget the IRS and ATFE! Wait til the Postal Service gets them. You haven’t been sending first class mail by a private service have you? Just to be safe, put on some extra stamps next time.

The first ammunition in use in the XM-25 is a 25mm high-explosive airburst round.

There is a whole list of stuff that I'd like (claymores are effective in keeping organized gang assaults from being completely effective), but the government reserves for it's protectors.

Conventional grenade launchers’ projectiles are usually impact fused and often cannot be used against people hiding behind walls due to angles and ranges. The ones that are time fused are often difficult to set so they’ll go off at the appropriate range.

This thing takes the guesswork out of the equation.

This screen grab from a high-speed camera shows the round detonating just inside a window target.

Exactly so. An impact fused round might have gone off upon contact with the window, wasting most of the power and shrapnel of the explosion outside. This one goes inside and gets the SOB who fired and ducked back, hugging the wall and thinking he was safe.

I understand the ACLU has already filed a suit to prohibit our Army from using it. "Too lethal," or some such nonsense. Like what they did in outlawing the very effective Active Denial System, which uses microwaves to make the enemy feel like they are on fire with no physical damage at all.

Wait, some do gooder at Defense at the Whitey House will recommend these weapons never be used. Why? Because the use of the weapon would be unfair advantage to the U.S. — our enemy has not such weapon and it would, therefore, be an unequal playing field.

Proof please. I call BS on that precise statement (highlighted above).

I like the bullpup design. Should be quite devastating in urban combat.

Now if Obama will just let our war fighters use these guns, we’d be making progress much faster.
