Democratic Senate candidate Scott McAdams doesn't just have to campaign to win over undecided voters. He also needs to stop people who might have otherwise helped make up his base from going for Sen. Lisa Murkowski's write-in effort.
Polls released last week show the Republican Murkowski drawing significant support among Democrats and independents who might otherwise vote Democratic.
"There were two schools of thought prior to (Murkowski) jumping in," said Anchorage pollster and political consultant Ivan Moore. "The first was that Lisa would split the Republican vote and lead to the Democrat winning. The second was that Lisa would basically split the anti-Miller vote and basically decimate Scott McAdams' chances. The second is very much what's happening."
Moore often works for Democrats but urged Murkowski to get into the race as a write-in. Another Anchorage pollster and consultant, Jean Craciun, also released a poll this week in which she said 30 percent of registered Democrats who responded were supporting Murkowski and another 15 percent were undecided. Craciun's poll was of "super-voters" who'd voted in three of the last four elections.
Polling in this race is problematic. Just because people might choose Lisa Murkowski when offered her name as an option in a poll doesn't necessarily mean the same percentage will take the step of filling in a write-in oval and writing her name when faced with a ballot.
Polls also showed Murkowski comfortably winning the Republican primary, and she lost. For what it's worth, the most recent rash of polling -- Moore, Craciun and another poll from CNN/Time -- now show Miller in the lead with Murkowski closely trailing, or, in the case of Craciun, Murkowski leading. All showed McAdams a distant third.

Murkowski now has support from unions, which means that there is little chance of dividing the conservative or even Republican voters now.
Rinos do not have a popular constituency. How could they? What is their message? Vote for me, I might vote in your interests some of the time mostly when it doesn’t matter?
Because the job of the media is to report any fact that hurts the dems in an obscured way as possible.
Eska,
I know what you mean when you say the local media and news are ramped up to show Lisa in the best light in every way that they can. As a matter of fact I decided yesterday that I’m done reading the ADN until after the election. Talk about pandering to her.
The response of the libs there is practically criminal. They say that Joe is a joke, a nazi, a liar, a carpetbagger, etc, etc.
No talking about real issues. When they saw that the talk about his acreage in Big Delta, or his support of Sarah in Troopergate was going nowhere, now they’re obsessing on whether or not he was eligible to get a low income fishing license in 1996 or not. How relevant is that?
No real issues about how to get our country turned around and heading out of the overwhelming debt, etc etc. Just the “I’m Shocked, shocked” attitude that Joe would tweet that he’s measuring his new office for drapes. A tweet? Give me a break.
Thankfully, there seem to be fewer of the great big “LISA” signs here in Fairbanks, but the only “Joe” sign I’ve seen is the one at my driveway that he gave to me personally.
I think he’s keeping his powder dry and to give her all the rope necessary to completely hang herself and her supporters. I look for the big shoe to drop about two weeks before the election.
He could make public the nasty phone message that Lisa left on his answering machine the night of the election, but I believe he’s too much of a gentleman for petty stuff like that.
How long it will take Democrats and RINO’s to convince her dropping out is the best option?
A 'gentleman' who tweeted that Murkowski's a "member of the oldest profession," i.e., a prostitute, during the primary campaign... is that what you meant?
I do think that Murkowski’s write-in campaign may be a blessing in disguise. I hope that Miller makes hay out of the fact that Lisa Murkowski failed the Alaska Bar exam four time.
I'd like to hear how Murky's campaign is playing out in Alaska.
Apparently, she's playing dirty and I don't know if Joe Miller is hitting back at her. He's got the credibility and the smarts, whereas she's a dunce. I trust that Alaskan voters know this.
Does your state have early voting like mine does?
Information that comes out near the election makes the poor unfortunate souls who don’t find out their information on sites like this one regret their decisions! Much weeping and gnashing of teeth!
I trust that Alaskan voters know this.
AK elected a democratic Senator in 08 over Stevens after he got in hot water. McCain/Palin got about 60% of the vote. In the Senator race there were about 2,000 write ins. There were over 300,000 votes in both races so I personally think write ins aren’t going to elect anyone up there. JMO and I know next to nothing about their political landscape except that a lot of it is remote with natives and independent minded folks.
Thanks GATOR NAVY.
Go Joe!
Actually, he wasn’t talking about Lisa’s profession. He was referring to the Libertarian Party if they took her as their representative.
Yes, we have early voting. Much of the early votes that allowed begich to steal the seat from Senator Stevens were early votes. Senator Stevens had a lead at the end of election night, but when those who voted early were counted it was a different story. That’s why I will never vote early.
We just got one of those calls tonight. (I live out here in Bush Alaska, at the edge of the treeline.)
One thing about polls: people don’t tell the truth every time. My 12-year-old son has been having a lot of fun with the computer-generated poll calls, inventing many things on the fly and smiling with glee as the computer program lurches this way and that way. I had no idea he was a middle-aged woman of Hispanic descent who wanted to raise taxes on everything, except capital gains, and also wanted to open ANWR but close the Pebble Mine. The good news is that he earns more than $200,000 annually.
I can’t believe my son’s the only guy tweaking the polls. I take them with a large salt lick.
Nice to see this story validates Dittman, who was interviewed on Channel 2 the day Lisa declared her write-in. He said Miller would win and Lisa would siphon off the Democrat and liberal voter. They are out there, like ruffed grouse on a winter day. Occasionally you flush them out and they make a great noise while flying away.
IMHO
You tell your 12 year little trooper that The Comedian wants to buy him a beer.
I mean, you know, when it's OK with you...
Murky will NOT win...
Seems like Murcowski is going to run until she wins.
A) I don’t think any of the polls quoted in this article are from Rasmussen.
B) I would imagine that the anti-Murkowski ads from 501c groups are only about to begin. The contrast between a Bronze Star-winning, Yale law grad, masters in economics Miller and silver-spoon fifth-time’s the-charm Murkowski is not her friend.
Thats funny.
