The Air Force says they have found the apparent wreckage of the F-22 that went missing Tuesday night.
A rescue team is being deployed to the area approximately 100 miles north of Anchorage.
The jet, from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage, was on a training mission when it lost contact with air traffic control Tuesday night. The plane carries one pilot.
The Alaska Air National Guard is leading the search effort, using three helicopters and a cargo plane. In a news release, the guard says the F-22 was flying with another fighter, which also lost contact with it....

No surprise but it’s sad news nonetheless.

I went with an AF fighter pilot for 12 years and one of my closest friends since 1979 is a retired AF fighter pilot and it just breaks my heart whenever I hear about this. I remember one night at Eglin, Sleepy called, said hello and then said he had to run. I thought it was the strangest thing that he called for no apparent reason until later on the news they reported about a midair collision between two F-15s over the Gulf with one making it back to the base. Shortly thereafter, I started getting calls from wives of other pilots to see if I’d heard from him. Seems that’s what “the family” does...if there’s an accident, you call your loved one, friend, etc., so they realized that you were ok and then all the wives and friends could contact with each other to make sure that each one was ok. It was an eye opener.

Do these aircraft have anything like the airlines Black Box...? Flight control computer but I don't think it keeps a record while it's flying the plane. All they'll have to go on is the wingman's debrief and condition of the plane after the crash. If it exploded into bits it'll probably just be conjecture of what caused the crash.

Think he was implying that this is what most SANE posters thought it might be; not the whacked out defection postings we have been seeing..
