Sen. Jim Webb won't run for reelection in 2012 (D-VA)
Washington Post ^ | February 9, 2011 | Ben Pershing

Sen. James Webb (D-Va.) has announced that he will not run for reelection in 2012.

Webb's decision, long anticipated by many in Virginia politics, will make his seat more difficult to hold for his party. Ex-Sen. George Allen (R), who lost the seat in 2006 to Webb, is running to win it back, and a handful of other GOP candidates are also running. Some Democrats hope ex-Gov. Tim Kaine will decide to run for the seat, but he has given no indication yet that he is interested.

Ken Cuccinelli. The guy is a conservative rock star.

There's a possibility, though he might be planning to run to succeed McDonnell as Governor in 2013.

He didn't make a single good vote in the Senate!

He stuck with the Democrat Party with every key vote.

Can someone even tell me what that means and why that destroyed his campaign?

I know it is suppose to have some racial aspect to it, but I don't know it is.

"A potential wrinkle in what we were discussing concerning McDonnell the other day."

I also wonder if Ken Cuccinelli has his eye on that seat, now. I have heard McDonnell say that he isn't interested in the VP slot, and he will absolutely complete his term as governor, and he hadn't expressed any interest in challenging Webb. But, as you elude to, there could be some pressure brought to bear on him.

With respect to Webb, to me, he seemed disinterested in being Senator, almost from the day he was sworn in. Other than the Iraq war and his visible dislike hatred for George Bush, I haven't heard him discuss anything with any real passion, really - with the possible exception to GI Bill improvements he sponsored his first year in office.

Even if he was interested, North would turn 70 in 2013, a bit too old to start on a Senate career.

"Can someone even tell me what that means and why that destroyed his campaign?"

Macacca is a pejorative term (kind of like the "N"-word) for people of desi nationalities - Southeast Asians.

There was a liberal activist who was following Allen from campaign event to campaign event and videotaping his every move. Allan apparently recognized him, and it was starting to annoy him (Allen). The kid looked Pakistani or Indian. Allen, called him out and referred to him as "Maccaca". Allen would later say he didn't even know what the term meant, which was a bit incredulous. In any event, it went over like a stripper in church in the NoVA area of the state, sealing Allen's fate.

Webb also seemed completely detached from voters; he held NO townhalls during the 0bamaCare dustup, very rarely went to glad-hand at public events and it was damned near impossible to get through to his offices. He also strikes me as someone who has the personality of a door knob.

Plus... it occurred during a democrat-wave election year (2006), and through it all, still only lost by 9000+ votes. Allen would've cruised to victory were it not for the "macaca" moment. Voters that year were looking for reasons not to vote GOP and he gave them one.

I like Allen, and will definitely support him if he's the nominee, but some fresh blood on the GOP side for that seat would be helpful. I'd recommend Randy Forbes, the Congressional rep from VA-4, or perhaps AG Cuccinelli... but I'd like to see Bob McDonnell pass on this race and complete his term as Governor.

I think that Cuccinelli should finish his term as AG. Webb was and is a nasty piece of work who was rude to Pres. Bush when he was visiting the White House. Somebody should remind Webb that Bush was his commander in chief. Webb is as phony as a three dollar bill: he allegedly told Obambi that the healthcare bill would be a disaster and yet he voted for it anyway! He can go back to writing porno novels and shopping for new toupees. His current one is a disaster.

RE: What is a Macaca?

A “macaca” is a racial pejorative to refer to someone either from or with ancestry from India or Pakistan.

And the “macaca effect” is pejorative used by people in high tech to refer to East Indians driving down the wages of American and British workers

It is a sad commentary on our politics and the way people think that the use of one word ( not intended to insult ), overshadows the policies of a politician, but such is life....

Most Americans allow themselves to be affected by charges of racial bias. That makes this card such a great weapon to use ( especially by those who don’t have good policies to present ).

After all that, I still don’t know exactly what is a Macaca.

Hadn’t even looked at it. Pretty unexpected, although I think Allen getting in had a lot to do with Webb getting out.
