Navy to Cut Jobs Amid Recession-Driven Sailor Surplus
Fox News ^ | July 08, 2011 | Justin Fishel

With more sailors staying in the military amid a slumping economic recovery, the U.S. Navy is taking the unprecedented step of firing low-ranking petty officers to help rein in spending. The Navy plans to let go of 3,000 young sailors after economic uncertainty put the service in the unusual position of having a manpower surplus. The move comes as a new government report shows that the unemployment rate ticked up to 9.2 percent -- marking 29 straight months that number has been over 8 percent and a record streak since the Great Depression.

Know what? I am an officer.

But I think of a lot of 0-6s that are holding positions that are, shall we say, non-essential.

Yes, but it is absolutely unacceptable to treat military personnel who have committed themselves to serving our country this way. In a world where other federal government employees are given better salary, benefits and treatment than private sector workers and where Obamas staff enjoys bigger raises and perks, I don’t care what it costs, give these men a decent severance, outplacement services, and the same courtesy many private companies extend to redundant workers.

25 would be the number I would seek were I chief cook an bottle washer of this country.

Hope yer well Doc...

I served in the Navy for 22 years. Rest assured that the 3,000 that will go aren’t the best and thr brightest. And they aren’t being fired, they just aren’t being allowed to reenlist. Trust me when I say that this is not a huge deal. Start worrying when the cut is 30,000, not 3,000.

O-6 club is worse than the mafia in terms of their duplicity and careerism.

How many of them could enlist in the Army or Air Force? Almost anyone who can get in the Navy, can enlist in the Army.

Amen brother. I am an active duty O-5 on a major staff in the Middle East. Millions (I mean millions) of dollars have been spent on me to train as a pilot and instructor pilot. I have around 3500 pilot hours and have spent at least 2000 of those hours training other pilots how to fly. At the peak of my game as a pilot I was forced to come to this staff. Know what I do? (I file TPS reports all day long) I re-tread power point briefs over and over, day in and day out. I am miserable. I do absolutely nothing aviation related. As a taxpayer (and a father) I think that the major staffs that we have in the military are a tremendous waste of money and are a scam. Right now with benefits I am making approx. $162,000 a year (completely tax free). I did more when I was an E-4. You can’t throw a dead cat without hitting and O-5 or an O-6 here.

Maybe, maybe not.

I remember the last draw down. A lot of smart people saw the writing on the wall and bolted.

Nixon froze pay nad promotions - just like they tried to freeze prices.

COuld test to make SSgt, but got to test for “Special proficieny performance pay” and get paid like a SSgt.

A bit later came the really bad cuts, then again in 1991 under Billy Klinton.

Now, we’ll see the Obamy cuts, and these will be deep.

Roumor has it the Dems are planning to convert the military over to the “Canadian model”
SO you’ll see US Forces, land branch, sea branch and maybe an air branch. Or. They may just put the USAF back under the Army.

The more things change, the more screwed up they get.
