Any FReeper changing their personal/home DEFCON level due to UK (and US) riot/pre-riot situations?

Mrs. MindBender and I keep a secure home; passive IR lights, alarm, long weapons in closet, hand guns close, planning, drills, etc.

Due to worldwide "problems," we have gone to more lights on, long weapons next to bed, and taking the Glock 23s with extra mags with us whenever out of home 20.

Anyone else?

We’re hillbillies.

We’ve been “prepared” ever since prohibition.

;D

>>I agree that there is a 1 in a 1000 or 1 in 10,000 chance we could be hit, but if Mrs. Freedumb or the little Freedumbettes were injured/killed, would you forgive yourself?<<

So I should put my whole family in Kevlar clothing and never let any of them drive (the latter has a MUCH higher probability of causing injury or death).

It isn’t so much doing prudent preparation (I love in Eeathquake country and have all the proper provisions, food, batteries, emergency lights, etc.) — it is your peace of mind that is of concern.

No change here. We live so far out in the country you can see the future coming. If the dust cloud turns out not to be the future, at least you had time to clean the house and check the weaponry before it/they got heere.

A bit extreme for this area, but without divulging anything specific on the ‘webs, we are always in a basic level of preparedness that fits the current situation as needed...

My goofy Sheltie is terrible guard dog, though.

Past a certain point, which you appear to have reached, you reach a certain point of diminishing returns with arming one household. You're probably at the point where organizing with your neighbors, church, co-workers, friends, family, or whoever you generally trust, will be more valuable in the event of catastrophe. Being ready starts at home, but the intermediate and advanced survival tasks are team efforts. Something to consider.

As I posted else where:“There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.

Underestimation can be fatal.”

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Siege of AR-558 (#7.8)” (1998) Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

Now go watch some of the videos of the riots in the UK or the flash mobs here and look into their eyes.

I have a little Yorkie and last week the Koi pond man came to work on my pond. I left the side gate open for him. My husband, myself and the dog were out back. The man just came walking through and my Yorkie went after him. She thought she was ferocious.

3/4 of a mile from a very bad area is not a good area. Keep up your current practices. I would in your situation.

"Any fire extinguishers handy?"

I hear a can of Wasp spray make a great weapon.

I don’t see rioting in the streets and marauder groups attacking homes.

Are you aware of the increasing number of home invasions in good neighborhoods? People are followed home from upscale malls or just picked randomly in affluent neighborhoods. I am not talking about Detroit or Atlanta but mid-sized cities and their suburbs.

You probably won't read about it in your local newspaper. Just like you didn't read about the thousands of youths rioting over Memorial Day weekend.

Talk to the folks at your local gun shop or talk to a relative who works for a police department. Things are reaching the tipping point.

We live a fair distance to any major cities, particularly the kind that are prone to that kind of behavior.
