Rick Perry Moves to the Right on Immigration
Town Hall ^ | October 7, 2011

Posted on 10/07/2011 12:50:18 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

In this interview [10 questions], Rick Perry is asked all the questions on illegal immigration that people have wanted to hear him asked. Over the course of the interview, Perry revealed a lot of new information on how he'd handle the illegal immigration issue if he becomes President. Although he might disagree with this characterization, his positions on the issue seem to be well to the right of where many conservatives believe he is on illegal immigration.

Here are just a few excerpts from the interview:

-- If Rick Perry becomes President of the United States, would that fence on the border be completed in your first term?

"I think what caused the hang up was that after it was passed, it was amended to give Homeland Security complete discretion on how, when and whether the fence ever gets built. Obviously with this president, that means it will never be completed.

If I’m elected, I will direct my Secretary of Homeland Security to expedite construction of strategic fencing along the border, especially in high traffic areas where manpower alone is insufficient to do the job."

-- On whether the Obama Administration was right to sue Arizona over their immigration law.

"I respect the right of all states to develop their own solutions, whether they use the Texas model or the Arizona model. I applaud my fellow governors who are showing leadership on this issue, because President Obama certainly has not."

-- On his "I don’t think you have a heart" comment from the last debate.

"On the issue of all Texas residents paying in-state tuition, I regret the comment from the debate. It was a poor choice of words, and it wasn’t fair to those who disagree with the policy."

-- Would you like to get rid of E-Verify and if so, what would you replace it with?

"I agree that some kind of electronic verification system is needed so we can make sure employers comply with the law not to hire illegal immigrants. E-Verify is a federal government created and run program, and as a result there have been a number of problems with it so far. The Department of Homeland Security estimated the system could fail to identify more than half of all illegal immigrants. But just because it has problems doesn’t mean we should throw employee verification out. It means we should make it work. ...So as president, I’d work to put in place an E-Verify system that’s more accurate, less burdensome and really delivers the results we need it to."

-- Rick Perry on the Federal DREAM Act.

"I too oppose the federal DREAM Act and will oppose it as President."

-- Would you support comprehensive immigration reform?

"The debate on immigration reform is meaningless until the federal government secures the border. There’s just no point in passing new immigration laws when we can’t even enforce the ones we’ve got. Once our borders are secure and we’ve fixed the problem with visa “overstays,” then we can seriously address our broken immigration system. But step one is to secure that border so we have the ability to enforce the law."

Once again, you can read it all here.

Hey Liz,

Just a friendly reminder that you have been making up quotes out of thin air all over FreeRepublic and attributing them to Rick Perry. You have also magically given Rick Perry powers to control marketing techniques in foreign countries, then bitched that Perry didn't implement said powers to control said marketing techniques.

Just sayin...

He knows he needs to ‘fix’ this if he wants to get back in the game, so thats good...

but ... THIS IS A NON-ANSWER:

— Would you support comprehensive immigration reform?

“The debate on immigration reform is meaningless until the federal government secures the border. There’s just no point in passing new immigration laws when we can’t even enforce the ones we’ve got. Once our borders are secure and we’ve fixed the problem with visa “overstays,” then we can seriously address our broken immigration system. But step one is to secure that border so we have the ability to enforce the law.”

It’s a non-answer because the open-borders folks will be - like mccain said “okay we’ll build the damned fence, now can we have amnesty?” .... which is NOT the point.
The point is that after we secure the border, THEN we follow up with E-verify AND we deport criminal aliens, and THEN we get back to ‘rule of law’ - amnesty will undemine it ALL.

... the correct answer is to have a clear 100% definitive “I will oppose amnesty or path to citizenship for illegal aliens” ...

"I'm so big-hearted. When I'm president, all America will be fluent in Spanish."

And if that wasn't such a scary thought it might actually be funny! Rick Ricardo Perry, the first and only choice of an illegal alien resident for El Presidente of Los Estados Unidos de las Américas.

Muy importante illegals residing in Texas, be sure to vote early and don't forget to vote often. Other tax dollar sucking illegal aliens are counting on you and so is Ricardo Perry.

Oh, please.....will you ever "get it?"

One of the fave things we do on FReepublic is called "Caption This".

When a candidate allows himself to be photographed in a particularly compromising position-----clever FReepers "create" appropriate captions.

If Perry doesn't like the heat, he should stay out of the dam kitchen---the egotistical wimp.

You do realize that we may have to do a lot of SIPping before the end of the primary run don't you!? LOL. I'm up for it. Anyone else want to play?

I thought about taking a shot of my favorite Scotch Whiskey but quickly realized I could go broke before the end of this game and end up mighty drunk. I'll stick my diet soft drink instaed, safer.

Could you please provide the actual steps your candidate would take to deal with immigrants and undocumented workers currently residing in this area? Please include legislative steps planned, and how your candidate would handle the process.

Also, would you please provide your candidate’s proposals for finding the revenue to conduct the court cases which would come for the mass deportations and how the court cases (required as per our Constitution to provide evidence if the person went through proper channels or not) would be organized and flow, and how quickly your candidate estimates he/she could come up with the cost of all the court cases of those who are fighting in these Constitutionally-required court cases for what their actual “status” is.

Which law enforcement agencies would your candidate most depend upon in removing the illegals, and what would be their organizational set up for the law enforcement agencies they would be working with? Also, would they rely only on federal law enforcement agencies or would they include local law enforcement agencies, and if so, which ones and in what priority? Does your candidate have a plan of inter-agency cooperation for government law-enforcement work for immigration law and deportation attempts?

What legislative steps would your candidate take on the federal level to protect citizenship rights, and how would your candidate work with the House and Senate to get any legislative changes on the federal level accomplished?

If a particular state is having problems with immigration issues, how would your candidate, on a federal level, work with that state in controlling any problems that may be occurring or that may arise on a national level from what is currently being done at the state level?

Along with that... Does your candidate feel he/she, as POTUS, has a responsibility for what is done on the state levels, and if so, how would your candidate handle a situation he/she does not feel is best for the country? Are there CERTAIN issues or actions your candidate might feel it is OK to step into a state’s rights, or does he/she feel it is OK to step on anything a state does which he/she feels is inappropriate?

I would also like to ask that you provide some information as to what words of commitment your candidate has given or a public commitment on States rights as per The Constitution of The United States of America. Could you provide proof your candidate could stand by that right, or does he/she feel he/she has the moral obligation to offset that Constitutional right if something a state is doing does not set well with the other parts of the country?

One more thing would help too, I think. Could you provide a record of what your candidate has done in the areas of immigration laws and legislation and border security already so we can have a record of his or her experience and how he or she has actually acted when faced with the real-life problems that come with immigration?

Thanks in advance for giving us an idea of what your candidate has done and has shown capable of doing in the vastly connected area of homeland security, federal border control, law enforcement cooperation, and state issues!

Caption or not, you have attributed false quotes to him.

Now, on to something that has nothing to do with captions, how have you managed to give the Governor of Texas the power to regulate marketing techniques inside a foreign country? You've accused him of not using said powers.

You have stated outright that Perry has done absolutely nothing regarding the border. That's false. Hell, there's a show on TV right now proving otherwise. Perry's got $400,000,000.00 worth of bills, paid by Texas taxpayers, that says otherwise. Since you believe that Perry's done nothing, I would suggest you contact DC and tell them that Perry sent them a fraudulent bill. Obama would jump on that in 2 seconds if that were the case.

... Gov.Perry is just like the politicians already in Washington, D.C.
No, Rick Perry isn't like any politician in DC, not even close. I know that you're indirectly pointing out a difference between Herman Cain and Rick Perry. It is valid to point out the differences, opinions will vary on what's good and bad, however. Perry has +25 years experience at the state level, +10 as governor; he has never served at the federal level. Cain served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City for 2 years; he's been active in politics since the mid-90's.

Look, the same cabal who hang on words alone and for sure hung on Sarah’s, are cult bait. There is no educating them on facts while they’re busy doing summer salts with the flag wrapped around their head, blind to the war on our hands, both foreign and domestic. We have a war on our hands and they want bedtime stories with a knight in shining armor to rescue them. Cain is the next best thing to the Second Coming after Sarah imploded. Victory in ‘12 will be elusive even with a win if we miss the mark and nominate the only heavy weight on the field. The governor of a near nation-state has the wounds of ten years of battle with a constituency of majority Mexican. There is a law prohibiting him from rounding them up and tossing them back. Rick elected to educate their children residing in TEXAS, so long as they prove to apply for citizenship, are already highschool grads of Texas schools. That is a reason TEXAS rocks economically—rather than a drag on the TEXAS economy there is an investment in productive venture with these young adults, who mostly have never known anything about Mexico. There is no WAY NO HOW that either party will EVER do the “trains” thing and round up human beings and ship them collectively back to the warzone of Mexico. So, get over it. Facts matter and that is one!

As for Cain tagging for Romney, take it to the bank. He wants to be Romney’s VP, which will never happen, or get some prominent post in his cabinet. By default, saying he would never serve as Perry’s VP is about keeping the sheets pulled back for Romney. Period. Rick is the threat of the century to the Rinos in DC, who want Rino Romney. They are guaranteed no sweat with Romney and should Cain make it all the way, in your dreams, they will role him before he finds the way to the White House solarium.

I, and many on Free Republic, are fed-up with the kind of crap both political parties have been spreading for decades.

Cincinatus’ Wife knows my view of Gov.Perry; I find him less than honest, a man who plays politics to power (crony capitalism/pay-to-play), and is a ‘big statist’ like most Republicans and Democrats owned by special interests. Perry isn’t going to deliver the smaller, law-abiding government Americans want for their country.

If the Founders of this nation felt that decades of political experience made for good government, they would have made that an eligibility requirment for the Presidency, and it would be stated clearly in the U.S.Constitution. They did not do so. So, they must have envisioned something entirely different.

If we settle for Romney or Perry, we’re still in the same groove, “government as usual”, which alienates the majority of Americans and feeds the discontent that votes Democrats into power.

Note: I am not yet supporting any candidate. Why did you bring up Cain?

For the ‘your candidate’ part, is no need to answer each point in detail. TOP leaders know the Blackwell rule: Staffing is paramount. Obama hired an open borders governor, Janet Napalitano, to run DHS, with a semi-hidden agenda to push amnesty/dream act and NOT actually enforce the law. Hire the right guys who will ENFORCE the law, and you will see a sea change.

Cain has committed to enforcing the law, and as an experienced chief executive he knows how that gets done. Hire the right people and hold them accountable.

Thats 90% of the solution right there.

Like the recent news of that mystery of illegal alien families not sending kids to school in Alabama, now that an Arizona-style law passed there ... its NO mystery that enforcing a law ends up reducing lawbreaking.

“Could you please provide the actual steps your candidate would take to deal with immigrants and undocumented workers currently residing in this area?”

Which area? USA?
No new immigration laws are needed, just enforce the laws on the books. Cain has put forth 4 steps:
1. secure the border by any means necessary - fence, national guard, etc.
2. Enforce the law at Federal level.
3. Path to citizenship? Use CURRENT immigration law.
4. Support state and local enforcement of the law.

other candidates, you can go to their websites.

On funding: It’s a bit of strawman, our ICE and DHS is amply funded, but hampered by our unwillingness to actually do their job. Prior Congress bills funded beds so catch-and-release would no longer happen, but Obama admin is simply DROPPING cases, unnecessarily. When they spend money on $14 muffins, can drop billions in added IRS, EPA and tons of other regulators, you KNOW its a copout.

“Which law enforcement agencies would your candidate most depend upon in removing the illegals”

The organizations are there. ICE is the federal agency. Border patrol etc. It’s not a matter of money, organization, or staffing. It’s a matter of political WILL.

“Also, would they rely only on federal law enforcement agencies or would they include local law enforcement agencies, and if so, which ones and in what priority?”

The lack of state and local coordination has been a serious gap. the other gap is the lack of E-Verify. Fix those 2 things and you will DRAMATICALLY reduce illegal immigration.

Lamar Smith’s CLEAR Act has for years been a solution, but never fully passed and tried. End/outlaw sanctuary cities and have ALL local and state law enforcement able / required to check immigration status of ALL those arrested, and deport those found to be deportable. Cain’s position, contrary to Obama position of opposing AZ law, is to support those efforts. Its not enough to use ‘10th amendment’ as a crux, since immigration law is defined federally and state and local law enforcement needs support. This is where Clear Act and the use of Federal databases etc comes in. IT WORKS IF WE TRY IT.

We have a significant fraction of prisoners in state and federal prisons who are illegal aliens, we could REDUCE OUR PRISON COSTS by deporting them all.

I am not sure why you think your over-detailed questions can be fully addressed, when OBAMA has not addressed them and has been in office. It’s not that complicated.

The problem is not in the details, but right in front of our noses:
Our leaders WILL NOT enforce the immigration law. They can. They should. For our national security, they must. BUT THEY DONT. For political pandering reasons, mainly.

Find a candidate who WONT enforce the law, and we have a problem. Find a candidate who WILL, and they are doing the right thing. If you want to know more, check the candidates’ websites.

BTW, I am sort of(*) a Perry guy and yet immigration is the one issue where he is least satisfactory. He hasnt fully answered the questions on this matter, so I cant even speak for him on it. I sense some double talk on it, so he can sound tough to the base, while not sounding xenophobic to LULAC etc.

(*)like Cain a lot too

I don't see Perry as being part of the problem judging by the enemies he has made.

Any problems I have with Herman Cain are fairly minor ones.
