Free Republic Sacrilege: Why Perry is the Conservative and Cain is Not
Self | 10/10/2011 | Beancounter13

Issue

Perry

Cain

2nd Amendment

Has a firearm, a CCL, and he uses them.

Has a long history of 2nd Amendment support:

2nd Amendment

Thinks gun control should be left to the state and local governments placing him at odds with Heller and McDonald.

Cain's CNN

Abortion

Perry signed into law a regulation would have required women seeking an abortion to view a sonogram and listen to the fetus's heartbeat while a doctor rattled off a detailed description of the fetus's anatomical development — and then forcibly ponder their decision for an additional 24 hours before an abortion could be performed.

Abortion

Pro-life from conception, pro-life from conception, pro-life from conception.

Cain's CNN

Gay Marriage (note the so-called 'flip-flop' actually serves to showcase Perry's support of the 10th Amendment)

Rick Perry has signed a pledge to back a federal constitutional amendment against gay marriage – a reversal from a month ago when the Texas governor said he so supported individual states' rights that he was fine with New York's approval of same-sex marriage.

Gay Marriage

Supports traditional marriage, support traditional marriage

Cain's CNN

Global Warming / Cap & Trade

Long history of fighting the EPA as Texas Governor:

[The EPA] relied heavily upon findings by climate-change scientists that have been subsequently discredited by the scientists' own e-mails ....

Global Warming

I don't believe global war-- global warming is real. Do we have climate change? Yes. Is it a crisis, no. And this is why I strongly oppose the-- the cap in trade

Cain on Global Warming

Red Flags

Use of a liberal term (“heartless”) while discussing an issue (in-state tuition for residents of non-citizens).

Use of a liberal term (“insensitive”) in referring to a racial accusation before the facts were revealed.

I could probably vote for Perry against Obama should he somehow win the GOP nod, but no way will I ever vote for this scumsucker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7OQoBxZZPqU

Perry is done. The nominee will be either Romney or Cain, and everyone who is still supporting Perry after he insulted, and then lost a very large number of his supporters for doing so, are only helping Romney.

You can’t call Conservatives who you need to be capable of achieving victory heartless on an issue as important as illegal immigration in defense of an unpopular liberal policy they already strongly disagree with you on and expect it to be forgotten. He lost way too much support and will deservingly not be able to regain a significant portion of it back when there is an alternative who takes the correct and popular stance on the issue.

Anyone supporting Perry at this point might as well be supporting Romney. I will not support or vote for either Romney or Perry even if they won the nomination. They are two of the most obvious opportunist I have ever seen with little principle. Getting elected will always be top priority for them. I thought we were fighting against these types of politicians?

They are both just as bad and I wouldn't vote for either even if one somehow wins the nomination. Supporting Perry at this point just helps Romney since Perry can't win. It's going to either be Romney or Cain regardless of what anyone wants. If people want to keep supporting a Perry who can't win any longer they are just helping Romney. Hopefully they will switch over to Cain, but I suspect many will continue making excuses for Perry on illegal immigration which is just laughable. You either don't support Perry or you just personally don't mind his position on illegals. I doubt most are ignorant enough to be blind to obvious facts on his horrible illegal immigration record. He's just as bad as Romney and Obama. All three will continue to destroy the nation at different paces.

How is Cain’s “empowerment zones” conservative?

That is not true. He was against only “one” part of Arizona’s Immigration Bill. And Arizona changed that part after Perry said what he did.

Perry supported Brewer in the Federal Lawsuit along with our Texas Attorney General.

Finally, some one who has done their research.

He is EXACTLY RIGHT ON THE SECOND. You understand?

The McDonald case allows the federal government into your second amendment rights! The Bill of Rights pertains ONLY to the federal government.

What a bunch..

Did you leave the “open borders” issue off on purpose? As a Texan, that and economic issues are the No. 1.

we’ll see if Perry can string a sentence together in the debate tonight. I cringe at the thought of Perry vs Obama in a debate and Perry can’t articulate anything.

Seems like Perry is a career politician.

Your story rings of the same familiar tune that Rush shared about Perry attending an event where Rush was -UNIVITED - just to try to get his picture taken with Rush then use the pic in his campaign as an “optic” to convince voters he was Conservative By Association.

If the KKK invited Perry would he go?

Perry is all about Perry! I am seeing more evidence that he is like a chameleon in a crayola box.

What other issues? People like to throw out the immigration and guardisil, but what are the other examples in his 10+ years. Both of those positions deserve examination, but they also must not be overblown. The guardasil thing was no tight but must be kept in perspective. Immigration, and border control? Mixed bag. He’s put huge resources into border protection. Mor Duran other states and above an beyond what the Feds will do. On immigrants hear..not so good, but perfectly in line with the rest of the conservative elected officials in the state of Texas. If Perry can prove his ability to campaign and debate effectively, he’s a pretty solid conservative outside of thse two oft repeated issues.

You forgot Perry defunded Planned Parenthood in TX. As a result some PPs have closed their doors.

Yep. Let’s train the big guns on Romney first. When he’s out of the race, then we can debate who’s more conservative and a better nominee.

This is a common sense strategy. No one bothers with Romney--he is being given a free pass. Romney should be the first one eliminated--besides Ron Paul.

I’ve been on the Cain train for quite a while. Since 0 was elected with about 14 months of national experience by voting ‘present’, governing experience is pretty much off the table this go-round. In fact, it becomes an advantage to NOT have a history of voting against X or for Y as anymore, that’s simply used against conservative candidates.

So we’re down to platform and electability, especially in the bracketology sense of the word. That is, how does Candidate Cain fare versus Obama? Keep asking that question for each of the premiere candidates. Make sure to take into account what role the Drive-By media plays too.

All things considered, Perry does make a fairly decent candidate. He just has some non-starters for me when I think about a) what that means to my core Conservative beliefs and b) how his platform and style will play out when facing Hussein 8 months from now through to the election.
