As for myself, after spending a few hours trying to get to know Mr. Cain, I have come to the conclusion that he knows his talking points, but I have not found much substance.
The CNN interview from last June was very illuminating in the lack of depth of his knowledge as far as conservative issues are concerned.
I will continue to watch over the next few months. I have time before I have to make a decision.

I’ve watched many of the interviews that you’ve cited. Cain was in the hotseat and firmly managing the situation well.
On another interview (with John Stossel, I believe) he went further on abortion and stated that he didn’t even support abortion in the case of rape.
Sometimes when I listen to Cain I can seriously relate. It’s how I feel when I’m talking to my teenagers.
“What part of ‘no’ do you not understand?” Cain will not support abortion and will go out of his way to support traditional marriage.
As far as the gun rights thing: It’s been debated ad nauseum already here on FR. What little limits on gun rights that there should be (not giving guns to felons) should be the perview of the states, not the federal gov’t.
Cain was right on that.

Both guys are conservatives. There are things about each that I like and that I dislike.
The main goal needs to be stopping Obama, and the first step in that process is to defeat Romney. I'll gladly support whichever one of them can pull that off.
Having lived in Texas for years, and watching Perry’s actions from year to year, we’re kinda screwed in this race.

By the time the election rolls around I’m sure I’ll be to the point of not actually voting FOR someone yet again.
Regardless, saying something like “Perry is the conservative” is a rather bold statement.
2nd Amendment: Did you perchance listen to the entire answer by Cain?
My read:
No onerous restrictions of the kind that will restrict the individual’s right to protect themself... State’s right to gun control where it does not conflict with the above statement, that would be restricting gun sales to felons (who have lost rights).
By the way, you left of some important things on your chart that don’t look so favorable for Perry. Support of individual and family rights (Gardasil); protection of the borders and discouraging illegal immigration rather than encouraging it (tuition for illegals, coming out against Arizona’s attempt to get some control); tendency to campaign one way and govern another.
Pretty sure Perry’s stance on immigration is a little worse than simply a red flag.
Maybe a white flag perhaps?
If Perry is so conservative, why isn’t he out there jumping all over liberals like Cain. For all his many supposed faults, Cain is verbally kicking arse ... Perry is sitting in the shadows. I want a President that speaks out and lets us know were he stands, not shying away from the issues.
I saw the interview with Stossel and Hennigan (?) and frankly, they didn't seem to understand where Cain stood on abortion and I sure couldn't figure out what he meant.
There’s no such thing as a perfect candidate, and ideological purity is impossible, but on the core principles of Conservatism - limited and Constitutional government, strong national defense, reduced government spending, and sensible tax policy - there can be no question that both men are Conservatives.
So, I understand the point of your comparison on the issues you selected, but I feel your subject line just creates unnecessary contention. We need to make Obama a One Term President, first and foremost.

What on earth do you think the effect of taking the 20-38 million illegals living here and legalizing them will have on our politics 10 years from now???

Well thanks be to God. I certainly agree on the missions ahead; 1)curb Romney, 2)REMOVING OBAMA! May God be with us and our candidates. We may be cooked if we win (civil unrest), but assuredly we are cooked if we lose (civil unrest).

Thanks for the info. My entire purpose of the post was to gain more insight on Cain so I will search for the Stossel interview.
I have a great deal of experience working with CEOs, and I can tell you that all have experience managing the hot seat so that part does not impress me much. In fact, I have learned to read ‘BS’ when I see it. I watched the CNN interview at least 4 times tonight shaking my head each time.
On the 2nd Amendment issue, that interview was in June. In June Cain was pretty hopeless dealing with questions he had not prepared for, and issues he had not thought through. Clearly the question on firearms was in both categories. I would like to see him issue clarification on that - probably he will do so anyway in a debate or subsequent interview.
Personally, I would give him a pass on that interview. Observing him now, how much better prepared he is for gotcha questions, how much more at ease, how much better formed and effective his responses are, I’m very impressed with his progress.
I really doubt that the response he gave reflected a core value. My sense is at that time it was simply something he hadn’t given due consideration to.
I like what you’ve tried to do here.
I’ve come to use an evaluation over the years in how closely a candidate who states they are conservative acutally governs or conducts themselves privately. Honesty (truthfulness), a belief in smaller government, and a governing style that respects the values and concerns of citizens and the US Constitution are just examples.
Some people will say anything to get elected: Mitt Romney is an example.
Rick Perry plays politics to power and has, in the past. involved Texas government in projects that Texans didn’t want.
Neither man exhibit conservative values in action.
Herman Cain will be a gamble. He has a record but it doesn’t involve governing. I have not yet began to conduct research on him and have not formed a solid picture of his stances on issues and how he has lived conservative values.
I know enough about Romney and Perry to know that neither man is presidential timber IMHO.
As I’ve said, this my personal opinion. I’m not debating their worths as potential candidates in the future 2012 race, just relating what I’ve found and why I will not vote for either man.
