Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Saturday that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally...
Mr. Cain added that he also would consider using military troops “with real guns and real bullets” on the border to stop illegal immigration.
The remarks were among the most pointed yet by Mr. Cain about illegal immigration, and they come as he is enjoying a surge in national political polls on the back of his victory in a recent Florida straw poll..
It is not the first time that Mr. Cain has floated the idea of an electrified fence. He has told the story many times of a caller to his former radio show who chastised him for talking about building a border fence, saying that such an idea was impractical.
“It’s going to be 20 feet high. It’s going to have barbed wire on the top. It’s going to be electrified. And there’s going to be a sign on the other side saying, ‘It will kill you — Warning.’” At an earlier rally, on the campus of Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tenn., he added that the sign would be written “in English and in Spanish.”
“This nation has always been a nation with wide open doors,” Mr. Cain said at the second rally. “We want to make it easy for people to come through the front door. And we’re going to shut off the back door so you don’t have to sneak into America.”

I think even the Texicans considered it back when they finally kicked out Santa Anna ~ they opted for a border at the LONGEST RIVER in the region but they could have demanded the Coast all the way to Honduras too.

since this article is from the Slimes, any quotes attributed to Cain need a fact check/context check. I know he says he was joking - using hyperbole, and I also know that the media can take anything out of context. I would like to see the speech or interview that this article is citing for myself.
I dunno if his rise is over, but rhetoric like that is best left to these boards. If he keeps this up, he will marginalize himself, despite all the other good things he has going for him.

Why people keep imagining the Berlin Wall is something I will never understand. The Fence kept millions of people from crossing from Eastern Europe to Western Europe. The Berlin wall kept a few hundred thousand from doing so. After all, many of those in East Berlin LOVED THE PLACE 'cause they were COMMIES!
Speaking of trying to land on the East or West coasts, what happens is Coast Guard will interdict you far at sea ~ we have electronic surveillance that detects your presence way out there ~ and you will open your mouth to speak Spanish and we will TAKE YOU BACK TO CUBA!

GREAT RED MEAT, politically incorrect to the core, to turn out the conservative base who will primarily be the voters in the GOP primaries. Great move. It will all be forgotten by November and Herman can watch such kinds of statements at that time, but for now, excellent timing and it raises his a) name ID; b) likeability by Conservative Republicans; c) donations, d) being an anathema to all of liberaldom whose heads are exploding and are magically SILENT because they have not figured out how to handle Herman Cain yet without it backfiring in their own faces.
You have just raised to possibility of using electric utilities' power grids (long distance transmission lines) along the top of the fence.
I'm not talking about 100KV (100.000 volts)...I'm talking about a million volts or more, which is commonly used in long distance transmission, before it hits the distribution (substations) part of the grid.
Now THAT would be effective.
Power companies, with Federal help, could string these lines along the top of the fence....one could also employ step-down transformers along the way to electrify the entire fence at a voltage that would just kill and not vaporize.
