Herman Cain: Electrify the Border Fence

Doug Powers

October 15, 2011

It’s now a “9999plan: 9 percent personal income tax, 9 percent national sales tax, 9 percent business tax, and a 9 amp jolt if you try to illegally cross into the US.

New York Times:

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Saturday that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally.

The remarks, which came at two campaign rallies in Tennessee as part of a barnstorming bus tour across the state, drew loud cheers from crowds of several hundred people at each rally. At the second stop, in Harriman, Tenn., Mr. Cain added that he also would consider using military troops “with real guns and real bullets” on the border to stop illegal immigration.
[...]
It is not the first time that Mr. Cain has floated the idea of an electrified fence. He has told the story many times of a caller to his former radio show who chastised him for talking about building a border fence, saying that such an idea was impractical. Mr. Cain often says he told the caller that he had recently returned from China, and if the Chinese could build the Great Wall then America could build a border fence.

Before we assume that Herman Cain’s suggestion will cause Democrats or even select Republicans to throw even more scorn in his direction, I’d suggest this: Cain could win over many of them simply by saying that in his border plan, the fence would be electrified with power provided by solar panels the government purchased from stimulus-backed green energy companies.

Well, given they have to sign up to be LEGAL to pay in state tuition...... gives a path to citizenship. Cain is for a legal path to citizenship. I think it is pretty smart to dangle a carrot and say well if you want it you have to sign up to be legal.

Under a loosening of Posse Comitatus, the government formed JT-6 which deployed military troops to stop drug smugglers along the border.

I’m sure Cain doesn’t remember this, as he’s not from Texas, but there was a huge outcry in TX when the Military shot this Presidio, TX teen who was herding goats. The troops were pulled out after this.

DA doubts military version of border shooting

DALLAS (AP) June 4, 1997 - - Local and state authorities say they’re
beginning to find discrepancies in the military’s explanation of the
fatal shooting of a Presidio County teenager by a marine two weeks ago.

Ezequiel Hernandez Jr., 18, a high school student from Redford, was
killed May 20 when he came upon four Marines participating in a Joint
Task Force 6 mission to watch suspected drug routes for the Border
Patrol.

The case is expected to go to a Presidio County grand jury next month.

Marine Col. Thomas R. Kelly, deputy task force commander, said Hernandez
fired two shots at the Marines and had raised his .22-caliber rifle to
fire a third when the non-commissioned officer in charge returned fire
with an M-16 and killed the teenager.

But District Attorney Albert Valadez told The Dallas Morning News that
early results of the local investigation raise questions.

“The comments made by the military were conclusions that were drawn
perhaps prematurely, he said in the newspaper’s Wednesday editions. I
would never draw conclusions as quickly as they did without some type of
tangible evidence.

Texas Ranger Capt. Barry Caver also hinted that the military’s version
of events might not add up.

“Some of the evidence, as far as the injuries to the body and the angle
(of Hernandez’s bullet wound), doesn’t exactly match what they’re
telling us,” Caver said.

Caver also said there was a “good possibility” that Hernandez wasn’t
aware that he was shooting at Marines, who were dressed in heavy
camouflage, their faces blackened and bodies covered in burlap and
leaves.

Maureen Bossch, a spokeswoman for the El Paso-based military unit,
expressed surprise at the officials’ remarks and added that the military
is cooperating with investigations of the shooting.

Authorities say the Marines were conducting surveillance because the
area is used heavily by drug smugglers crossing the Rio Grande.
Officials said they do not believe Hernandez was involved in any illegal
activity when he was shot.

The incident has raised questions about the wisdom of using military troops in border operations.

Yes and Perry has power plants shutting down in his state. The EPA is a group that is not elected, makes decisions and is not accountable. Makes me sick.

I hope Perry can get some mojo back with his energy plan

How is Perry's energy plan fundamentally different than Cain's? Cain is in favor of loosening regulation so that we can develop our own abundant resources and letting market forces drive the appropriate energy sources. He is against goverment subsidies to pick winners and losers. You can read his Issues section on his website. I don't see an "Energy" topic section on Rick's website, but from what he has said, it sounds like a similar stance to Cain's.

A kid with a .22 taking potshots at 4 armed men?

Strange story.

Well, for one thing, he wants to completely dismantle the EPA, that group of idiots who sit around thinking up ways to destroy business based on some stupid green theory.

Cain was to rework the EPA. You can’t cure stupid, you just need to get rid of it.

A very strange story. I remember when it happened but I don’t remember the final disposition of it.

I doubt he saw them. They were 200 to 400 yards away, tracked him for twenty minutes. He was on private property.

The military were wearing ghillie suits. He may have been aware of "something", but the Texas Rangers findings were that the military lied. The angle of Hernandez wounds were such as to show that the military's version was not truthful

Also, when the Sheriff got there, the military waited fifteen minutes to tell the local Sheriff they had shot a teenager herding goats. The military did not attempt first aid, just checked his pulse while the kid bled out.

There was a huge outcry because the military could go on anyone's property, without letting people know they were there. They even were inland at times, not just along the border. Basically, ranchers here were thinking that if you were out on your property, with a varmint rifle, the military would shoot first, and ask questions later, or just kill you, and dump you in a ravine.

I don’t remember the final disposition of it.

A grand jury did not indict the four "shooters". The family sued the fed's for wrongful death, and received $1.9 million dollars.

Yes, his legal path to citizenship is the one that currently exists now. They have to go home and apply from there. I think his path to citizenship is the way is should be. No bending and changing laws to suit the criminals. Take away the jobs and the goodies they come here to get, send them back home and let them apply for citizenship there like everyone else patiently waiting on that line.

I think some “republicans” have totally missed the mark on this one. They don’t understand that Americans are fed up with a system that gets their own govt. to steal from them to provide for people who are not even supposed to be here.

Why do you think Alabama, Georgia, and Arizona have fought so hard to defend their states from these invaders? Why do you think Perry dropped from the lead into fourth place or less? It is precisely because certain moderates (RINOs) have no clue how angry we are at what is happening to this country.

We are tired of having our pockets picked, we are tired of being invaded, we are tired of having the invaders run roughshod over our laws, scoff at us and get away with it, and we are tired of having to coddle the invaders because some bureaucrats and legislators think we should. We are tired of having politicians tell us there is nothing we can do about it but give the invaders more of our stuff.

I hope this gets plenty of play in the media. Just like they thought painting Reagan as a crazed warmonger would hurt him, this will definitely get more people to consider voting for Cain.

If Cain wants to rework the EPA, I hope he would clean house of the green god idealogues (that might be all of the personel there now) and significantly reduce its power and size. I would have to agree that a federal agency that declares CO2 a dangerous pollutant is an agency totally out of control and a threat to liberty and reason.

"I have an electric fence that I use to try to keep ILLEGAL aliens off my property. It works to the extent that they do not cross where the fence is but go around it to my gate and cross. To date no one has been killed; I have yet to find any bodies, anyway"

Looks like a good arrangement, but I reckon your fence is plugged into a livestock charger and not directly into a 120-volt household outlet or something like that. ;-)

Electric livestock fences run several thousand volts and very low amperage unless unintentionally grounded somewhere.

I like the Cain.
He should say illegals get no more goodies. He should lead the charge to end the anchor baby nightmare. He should throw employers who knowingly hire illegals or pay them under the table in jail. Illegals using phoney idea should do long stretches in the same federal jail. That federal prison should be a copy of Sheriff Joes’s barbwire hotel and should be located in Arizona.

Prisoners with high IQs could be trained to do the computer work of low level federal employees to shorten their sentences from 100 to 20 years. Fewer federal emplyees that way.

Self deportation. Problem solved. No border fence needed.

Sorry Chesty,

My dad was a Marine so I really respect your service as well as your screen name. But jobs for illegals are perks, just like the goodies we are forced to give them. Illegals take work from honest hard working US citizens. Proof positive of that, when the illegals left Alabama, companies who lost workers put out the call for employees and had lines of people out the door and around the block ready to answer that call.

I have zero sympathy for those who want to coddle them. The invaders need to be de-incentivized to be here and seriously encouraged to return home.

Electric fence is good for keeping bears out, too, BTW (on the Rockies). ...fence that’s more permanent with less maintenance for livestock (nonelectric, high tensile).
