It’s State College. The university is in University Park, which actually has its own zip code, police force, etc. That’s led to some confusion about what police force should have been involved / notified (of course none was so the point is moot).
I guess my term would be ‘in denial’ rather than ‘knows’.
I know this seems to be a fine distinction, but it’s important to find out whether Joe actually knew or just put his fingers in his ears and screamed ‘LA LA LA!’. One is passive, the other active.
Inaction falls mostly in the moral realm, occasionally in the legal realm of negligence if severe enough. Active is no question in the moral realm, and very much falls in the legal realm as conspiracy.
If the former, then other than lawsuits, what has been done to Joe is about all we can do, unless his negligence is proved to be egregious to the point where it can be proven he SHOULD have known. If the latter, then the spotlight needs to be put back on Joe and his ass thrown on the grill.
IMO it’s very important we keep those distinctions very clear and don’t throw unproven conjecture around.
On of the ramifications of this is, you most likely won’t see anymore coaches over the age of 70.
I used to be his fan. It has been sad watching him the last few years. Even sadder watching him this past week. Even sadder knowing what has been going on at State College. I grew up in the South but the game we always watched was PSU-Alabama. The ultimate game for us was to have an undefeated PSU and and an undefeated Alabama play each other.
We know that Paterno knew he was a child rapist in 2002. Did Paterno stop Sandusky. NOPE. He protected him while Sandusky raped for years. If Paterno had stood up like a man countless littles boys would not have been raped. Instead, he let it happen again and again."
You have ZERO proof that Joe knew. ZERO. The grand jury report provides no evidence as such. You have ZERO proof that Joe protected him or covered it up.
As I wrote on my last post to you -- see the two links I posted there, that happened. The Madden emphasis on the larger pedophile ring was the FIRST thing that began Thursday morning!

You write about how it "keeps being avoided and deflected her and the spotlight being brought back to Joe" as if a fallen coach Paterno has been posted about for months or even weeks.
Back up with the news timeline. He was only fired Wed. night. And the normal news cycle for people to absorb that is at least 24 hours and longer! And here we, are Fri a.m. & you're making these comments?
You remind me of an undertaker who has all sorts of bodies of bury. A long-time coach with a swell of adoring fans -- coupled with those who think his "legacy" should be described less than charitably because of his negative legacy -- are attending the Memorial service and follow-up graveside.
But there you are...
...in the church,
...alongside the motorcade,
...and at the graveside...
...screaming rah-rah primal screams to get people to literally sprint through each of those processes...
...screaming with indignant rage,
...to rush people through paying their respects (or disrespects depending upon how he impacted you and others) to the man...

Finally, somebody in authority comes to you and says, "That's enough. Yes, there are other dead bodies urgently waiting to be buried. But guess what? You're not the only mortuary in town. In fact, nobody else is utilizing your services."

The proof is in the pudding.
The grand jury report states that Joe was told what McQueary had seen. McQueary states he saw Sandusky raping a ten year old. Joe knew.
And yet where was he in 2004?

And yet no one at Penn State knew? If they did know, they were not concerned?
No doubt. He should have left in 2005 at the latest, but more probably in the late 90s. He just doesn’t have the mental faculties to deal with the job anymore, and it’s manifesting itself this week.
In 2002. After Sandusky was retired. Even then the AD and the VP still said there was nothing there. He had the word of one man v. the entire PSU apparatus.
Now, should Joe have made the effort to put 2+2 together and realize there was something there and followed up? Yes he should have. He didn’t because or moral cowardice, self-absorbedness, CYA, and negligent inaction and just didn’t want to see. That doesn’t mean he KNEW and you certainly can’t prove with the info we have that he KNEW in 1998.
And it certainly doesn’t mean he protected Sandusky. We have no evidence he used his position to do so.
Excuse me for wanting to strike while the iron is hot, and not falling for the media psyops, and not having sympathy for kids who supposed to be so able to ‘get over’ it.
We have become a society that dwells on insignificant things and ignores the important. Not my problem.
I see you want to keep Joe's issue in the headlights.

Everyone in State College knew about the 1998 investigation. What did Joe do? When Sandusky left more than a year after the 1998 incident, Joe referred to him as 'like a son'. Joe kept quiet in 2002. One word from Joe to the right people would have prevented the rape of dozens (hundreds?) of little boys.
I admire that zeal.
In fact, I spoke positively of it at the beginning of post #168...and thought so highly of how you finished up a post I cited it to another poster in #169.
More personal attacks. You are beyond hope falsely claiming that we are not concerned about the kids. Joe is gone. Move on.
His inaction allowed Sandusky to rape kids. One word to the proper people and Sandusky would have been stopped.
For the record, my dislike for Joe Paterno commenced with disparaging remarks he made against Alabama at the end of the 1979 Sugar Bowl. But that has no bearing on my opinions regarding the facts of this case.
Paterno testifies that a "visibly upset" McQueary came by his house and reported what he had seen. He also testified that 24 hours later, he relayed an account to the AD that differs from McQueary's testimony.
The bottom line here is that for a decade, Paterno continued his working relationship with both McQueary and Sandusky. There is a disturbing disconnect with that. For ten years, he has known that McQueary saw and heard Sandusky raping a 10-year-old boy in his locker room shower. Yet during those same ten years, he continues his friendship with Sandusky, ensuring that he had campus access and perks.
Paterno is no victim here. He knew what happened, and he did nothing to protect Penn State. And he certainly did nothing to help those young boys who would be getting raped for the next ten years.
