Since I can’t read the article I’ll respond to the title:
It’s not a catastrophe for science when junk science is confronted and eliminated.
I don’t have to read the article to know that it has damaged science immensely.
It’s about trust. It only takes one little lie to throw doubt upon everything that somebody tells me and climate gate is that one lie that forces me to have to check and double check so-called scientific facts.

The "scientists" who continue to perpetrate the global warming fraud approach their science in exactly the opposite manner as the approach described above. They formulated a theory based on political ideology (as well as the path of least resistance to "grant" money) and then do whatever they have to do with their data to "prove" it.
What the world has now seen with the expose of the "global warming" scam puts a new spin on the old saying: "Figures can lie and liars can figure." The discipline of science has taken a massive hit over the past two years and it could take many more years for science - - and scientists - - to regain credibility with the public. A lot of that burden must fall on honest scientists, and the first and most important thing they must do is scream for the heads of Michael Mann, Phil Jones, and the rest of the fraudsters masquerading as "scientists". I guess we'll see if they have the guts, integrity and self-respectto do it... No, I am not holding my breath.

Clearly, we need to do something about "climate change", and fast! Here are some solutions proposed back in 1975 during the original "climate change" scam, the one known as "global cooling".
"Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects. They concede that some of the more spectacular solutions proposed, such as melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers, might create problems far greater than those they solve... The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality."

Meet the new corrupt alarmists, same as the old corrupt alarmists.
According to the FT, we laypeople are just too stupid to understand global warming, or climate change.
Go to google.com and paste the article’s headline in the search field. Click the link in the google search results and you’ll be able to read the article without having to register.

There are only politicists, and I do not believe anything they say at all on any subject.

They are political scientists. Now I know what the curriculum was all about.
The first question to ask about a bit of scientific research- “Is it government funded?”If it is government funded and non-military then it is being done to provide politically correct backup for already determined political positions.
Why shouldn’t science be corrupted like everything else?
The article minimizes what was discovered by the published emails, which included data being altered and disappeared in order to make the answers come out right. Some of the data which was deep-sixed can’t be re-created. Its gone.
So what was discovered wasn’t just that scientists have egos, which no one doubts, but that global-warming-partisans are vicious and dishonest. Most of us had figured that out too, but the emails left them naked and exposed in terms that the layman could understand.
But, except for this article, if you read the news or watch the news, if you listen to the average politician, you’d think this never happened. Politicians and talking heads talk about “climate change” with a straight face assuming with some justification that most people don’t know that its already been exposed as a fraud. This is how shameless they are, having been found out, they continue to pretend that nothing has changed. And to their shame, few “conservative” politicians are willing to call them out on their fraud. The political wind has shifted in our favor but even at that people are unwilling to confront the fraud out loud.
