Gingrich Up 10 in Iowa; Perry Moves Into Third

Kyle Adams

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich continues to hold a strong lead in Iowa, according to a new poll released Tuesday. Meanwhile, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has moved into third place ahead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Gingrich leads the field with 27 percent support while Texas Rep. Ron Paul comes in second with 17 percent (up from 13 percent in an Insider Advantage poll released in late November). Perry has 13 percent, up from 7 percent in the November poll, and Romney has 12 percent.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann has 10 percent, former Pennsylvania Gov. Rick Santorum garners 7 percent support, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman rounds out the field with 4 percent support.

The poll comes on the heels of Saturday night's debate in Des Moines, where Gingrich fended off numerous attacks from his rivals, and Romney came under fire for offering Perry a $10,000 bet.

Perry, who rocketed to the top of the field after his entrance in August but plummeted in the polls in the wake of several poor debate performances, has seen his numbers rise in Iowa as he blankets the state's airwaves with ads highlighting his faith and his anti-Washington credentials.

Considering the pounding Newt has taken over the last couple of weeks that has to be good news to his campaign. The big looser is Romney. I hope Newt can take Romney in New Hampshire as that will really open things up.

Ron Paul is second?

Ah, well, we'll see what actually happens on primary day.

Willard is dead meat if he comes in third in Iowa. I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes in forth.

The other candidates need to turn up the heat on Ron Paul’s suicidal foreign policy statements, associations and fake “I’m a strict Constitutionalist” credentials.

WOW This is wonderful news!

Rick Perry was very good in the most recent debate last Saturday, especially when he went after Obama on the downed drone that Obama let the Iranians have.

His statement: “The President is the problem, not something Newt Gingrich said” was received with thunderous applause!

Perry is gaining momentum and has a new Ad about it:

I want to see Romney come in 4th in Iowa JUST to enjoy the talking heads sitting in a circle explaining how they got it so wrong!

I’ll take Perry over the Newt or Romney any day. Hope he continues upward.

Since this is a caucus state anything can happen. The Paulbots are likely to mobilize a lot of their units, and give us a Huckleberry or Pat Robertson result. It won't matter in the long run, except that if he finishes second it would hurt Romney's credibility for later contests.

Ah, well, we'll see what actually happens on primary day.

Caucuses are much different than elections. You can't mail in your vote, you can't drop by any time to cast your ballot. You have to commit a couple of hours and listen to people advocate for one candidate or another. Pure numbers don't mean as much. The level of commitment is also important.

Given the determination of his supporters, how much effort he has put in, and his past successes in Iowa; being in second and within 10 points, Ron Paul is still not the favorite, but he is in shooting distance of winning Iowa. It would not surprise me at all.

At what point can we drop the “frontrunner” fiction from Romney?

A 4% crossover vote.

Good point, the media narrative is getting a little frayed around the edges.

Perry has the money to stay in the race and be competitive.

It could be another case of a third place guy taking the prize eventually when the two front-runners can’t close the deal.

At a convention funny things can happen. All it takes is one candidate to fold his tent and point to another guy instead of his biggest rival.
