What a difference a caucus makes. Rick Santorum who two months ago had one percent (1%) support among likely South Carolina Republican Primary voters now is running a close second there with 24% of the vote.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the Palmetto State finds former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney still in the lead, earning 27% support from likely GOP Primary Voters, up from 23% in early November. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is in third with 18% of the vote, followed by Texas Congressman Ron Paul at 11%.

Bringing up the rear are Texas Governor Rick Perry with five percent (5%) and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman at two percent (2%). Another two percent (2%) of these likely primary voters like some other candidate, and 11% remain undecided

“Newt chose to raid the projected $1.5 trillion dollar surplus in the Social Security Funds in 1998”

Those damned tax cuts for the rich...lol

CTJ’s goals include: “fair taxes for middle and low-income families; requiring the wealthy to pay their fair share; closing corporate tax loopholes; adequately funding important government services; reducing the federal debt; [and promoting] taxation that minimizes distortion of economic markets.”[2]

CTJ is generally considered to be a LIBERAL organization.[3][4][5] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_for_Tax_Justice

“Gingrich knows the score ... but I sure see how it blocks a conservative from getting traction”

You would have to be a moron to think that - after Romney just turned his GOP E Club millionaire hit club on Gingrich.

First of all, we don’t have a caucus, we have a primary.

Second and sadly, it is an open primary regardless of party affiliation. This means the dems do and will vote in the GOP primary and we may end up like we did in 2008 with McCain only it could be Romney this time.

We really need to close these primaries. Newt is running strong and I think Perry will do better than the polls say.

I can say that though I don’t get out much, the only signs I have seen with my own eyes are Gingrich signs though I heard there were a lot of Perry signs.

We need a really good debate before the 21st. Our primary is on a Saturday and I can only hope it keeps the dems crossing over from voting.

No. DeMint hasn’t endoresed anyone yet. Most (excluding our idiot governor) of our politicians have not. I think they are waiting until after NH.

Her approval rating is about 34% last I heard. She is a small business woman and I think that is partly the reason she endorsed Romney, the other being pure politics. It certainly has hurt her here but then she was already creating a kind of blah feeling here anyway, better than a democrat of course but not a lot of fire that we expected.

Graham is the result of too many ‘damn yankees’ moving to the South and not enough ‘good yankees’.

We also have Jim DeMint and Joe (You Lie) Wilson which proves we still have conservative voters.

Can’t conservatives add, or is it all ego?

You've been on FR long enough to know the answer to that question.

The suggestion by any one candidate's supporters that the other two should take one for the team would be met by outraged howls of "RINO!" and accusations that they're trying to "muzzle" the TRUE CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE!!!!

If they're supporters are this bad, what do you think the actual politicians are like?

I hadn't heard that DeMint went to the dark side too.

To my knowledge, DeMint hasn't endorsed anybody.

Yes, we have a primary system, but also a hold a county convention (not caucus as you said) ours is normally after the Primary on primary election night.

Received this a few days ago from our Republican County Chairman:

Most of you are aware of the chaos being caused in upcoming Texas primaries by the meddling of Federal Courts in Texas redistricting. The courts have set the final day a person can file to be on the Republican (or Democrat) Primary Ballot as 6 PM on February 1st, but as of this moment, the day you can begin to file for a spot on the ballot is STILL TO BE DETERMINED BY COURT ORDER. I am going daily to the Texas Sec. Of State website and will let you know the moment the beginning date is posted.

“And how well do you think Santorum’s opposition to birth control will fly with women? Somebody tell me how, please.”

I, for one, do not think it’s going to “fly” very well. Quite the contrary, I think the left and the media is going to make some big hay over this, and it will cost Mr. Santorum a LOT of womens’ votes.

I daresay that even the majority of _conservative_ women want it to be _their choice_ insofar as birth control is concerned.

This position isn’t going to win him many votes. It’s best he try to downplay it as much as possible. Election-wise, it’s a loser.

You are missing the point again though. Mr. Reagan was conservative AND charismatic

And Mittens is NOT conservative and is NOT charismatic. But here you are shilling for him anyway. I'll take conservative and not charismatic over Mittens. They said Reagan couldn't win in 1979 because he was too conservative. That was BS then just like saying a conservative can't win today, charisma notwithstanding.

Voters are going to vote their best interests. Hope and Change has delivered 9% unemployment and a host of other problems. Voters don't need to know that the alternative is conservative. All they need to know is that it is an alternative to something that isn't working. It takes someone who can communicate. Newt is an excellent communicator. It remains to be seen with Santorum. Perry, not so much.

Now, please go back to your earlier post and tell us the real reason FR is opposed to the election of Mitt Romney. If it isn't because he's not a conservative, what is it? Are you accusing your fellow conservatives of some hidden bigotry? You really need to answer the question after making such an accusation.

"The problem I have is how is it that the McCain voters in IA did not move to Romney in any significant numbers (Gingrich won the largest share of it), but yet they ARE moving to Romney in SC? This doesn’t make any sense"

Momentum. Moving to the 'safe' candidate, much as McCrisis was.

..so with two Big Name, Big Tent republicans, with HUGE sums of money and double digit polling in the race , I am a “moron” for thinking that hurts Santorum ? because Romney is attacking Gingrich ?....OK then 1+1 must also equal 5 to you, so carry on

"Nikki Haley is an absolute disgrace. Really nothing more to say. Anyone who comes out for Romney is an absolute disgrace. "

Like Ann Coulter for instance , she looks more AND more like a hystrionic psycho every time she rattles

I'm not hopeful.

The petulant and unlikeable Santorum's just about the last "conservative" that I'd want nominated. He's a weak opponent for Romney; another inexperienced, big government, neocon lawyer.

I made no such accusation, but you seem to suggest that possibility.

I suppose some might not like the fact that he’s good-looking, wealthy, successful, articulate, and has a loving family. Not to mention a strong faith. Maybe that’s it.

It’s almost impossible for me to understand the level of hate towards your less than perfect candidate, at a time when we are in such dire need to remove Barack Obama from office. Again, I’m good with anybody WHO CAN GET ELECTED to remove him.

Have a great year. . . .
