Does anyone here keep their grocery receipts from a long time? I'm curious to know if anyone has seen obvious cases of inflation at the grocery store.
Barry can run. But he can’t hide.
I agree. But every American who eats food and shops at grocery store knows exactly how crazy expensive food has gotten.
It is horrible. We just put in a pretty large garden- for our standards.
My bread machine works everyday, as well.
If only we could keep a cow and chickens on a military post!
Chunky soups- $1.25 two years ago now $1.88 at Walmart’s. Everything(vegs, milk, meat, etc) up 10-20%
Coffee is through the roof!
About 4 years ago, a can of tuna got smaller. The prices have gone up too. I think they used to be 6 ounce cans and now they are 5 ounce cans. The 6 ouncers used to be 30c each or there abouts. Now a 5 ounce can goes for 79 cents. Or more.
I don’t have any tuna cans in front of me so I can’t verify the sizes. I just remember when they got smaller I happened to have two cans of the same brand(starkist) with me at work and was showing everyone how they changed the size.
PB crackers I eat for breakfast with coffee at work: not too long ago were $2.44, could get them on sale for half of that. Now $2.97 (8 pack). The paper napkins we use went from $1.99 to $2.38 overnight. Just two of hundreds of examples.
Last year a loaf (one pound) of whole wheat bread (Orowheat) was $2.99, it is now $3.29 and 3/4 pound loaf.
One pound of 20/80 ground beef was $3.99 pound, now $4.99 a pound for 30/70, if you want 10/90 it is $6.99 a pound.
Milk is almost 200% more.
Coffee is about 50% higher.
Gas from $2.50 to $4.99.
All cereal has fewer ounces by about 20%.
Even rice has gone up by about 100% but still cheep.
(((Sigh))))
I have weekly ads that are 3-4 years old for starting fires. That’s an easy way to get a good glimpse across the board.
It gives you the price per ounce etc on everything so you can compare shop. Easy to find the true lowest price.
Many times the brand names are cheaper than store brands, and small packages/cans are often cheaper than large sized items.
Every recipe ever printed for canned tuna requires a 6 ounce can of the stuff. Unfortunately, tuna is now in 5 ounce cans.
One of my earliest depression era memories was my spending of a birthday present dime. I walked to a nearby Japanese fruit market, presented my dime, and asked for grapes. The merchant took the dime and I walked home carrying about ten pounds of grapes. My guess is that I was somewhat short of being five years old.
It is very good coffee.
Peanut butter, ground beef and real butter are crazy nowadays.
I keep them til I get home then throw them away...
Sure. Coffee up 23% in fourteen months. Year to year, canned cat food up 22% and Half’n Half up 17%.
Sheryl Crow recommends using them for toilet paper...
Those making low wages, or $15. an hour or less, are financially dead.
“The increase in the price of Peanut Butter is killing me!”
The only way to go is BOGO with coupons to keep PB(or for that matter, most everything) reasonable.
Other than the fact I had to take out a second mortgage last time I went to the local grocery store...no.
