Judge refuses gag order in George Zimmerman case

SANFORD, Fla. - A judge has refused the prosecution's request and will not issue a gag order on those involved in the murder trial of George Zimmerman, who's accused of murder in the death of Trayvon Martin.

Saying he wouldn't entertain the state's request at this time, Florida Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester said Friday he would not stop Zimmerman's attorneys from talking to the media if they chose.

"Attorneys, specifically the defense counsel, are still commenting about the facts of the case," state prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda said.

"I've been very careful. ... I don't have the evidence (in the case) yet," said O'Mara, referring to the fact that the state's evidence has not yet been provided to him.

O'Mara also said in court Friday that his client's case is the "most significant media event in the country."

Before ruling that a gag order would not be considered at this time, Lester said both state and defense attorneys have been conducting themselves professionally.

Zimmerman is accused of second-degree murder for the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The case has drawn national attention because Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch volunteer when he shot Martin, who was unarmed.

Zimmerman was not charged for more than six weeks because he claimed self-defense.

The hearing also dealt with several media organizations, including The Associated Press, asking the judge to unseal documents from Zimmerman's court file. The issue of Zimmerman's finances were also discussed.

Mark O'Mara, a former Local 6 legal analyst who now represents Zimmerman, informed Lester that his client had raised more than $200,000 via a website. O'Mara said he only recently learned about the money and was still gathering facts about the account associated with the website.

Zimmerman did not appear at the hearing.

The prosecutor wants a gag order.
They know their case is weak, and don’t want the public to know all the facts going in..............................

I’ve been gagging over this fiasco since Barry and the ‘RATS decided to exploit it in hopes of using it to help their chances in November.

After the prosecution has been trying Zimmerman in the press for two months they want to prevent him from destroying their carefully constructed narrative.

The prosecutors know this fight is more in the court of public opinion than anything else. Can’t have zimmy defending himself.

Yeah, I guess... on the other hand, the Martin’s personal lawyer Benjamin Crump has been acting like a total ass.

Angela Corey is evidently more cowardly and smarter than Mike Nifong. Why take the fall for this politically driven, malicious prosecution of an obviously, innocent man, when you can assign some other clown (and de la Rionda seems perfect to play the clown) to be the fall guy?

Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch volunteer - who was attacked from behind by a thug twice his size and would have been killed himself if he hadn't had a handgun - when he shot Martin, who was unarmed.

"Attorneys, specifically the defense counsel, are still commenting about the facts of the case," state prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda said.

What a whiney little Bitch. Who was it that called the Prestitute conference to revel in the fact that you had filed charges against Zimmerman? Who was it that failed to provide the photo evidence to the Defense of Zimmermans injuries?

The fact that the Prosecution still to date hasn't provided the "evidence" to the Defense makes their motion reek of Political theatre. IOW we want to poison the jury Pool and sway public opinion on our rumors and back room press leaks. But Please Please Please your Honor don't you dare let that mean Lawyer talk to the press about our actions or lack of a case.

I fear that O’Mara is not showing sufficient outrage at this prosecution. The defense needs someone who is not just diligent and thorough, but passionate and aggressive against this ridiculous case.

I agree. This lawyer has no fire in his belly.

“The defense needs someone who is not just diligent and thorough, but passionate and aggressive against this ridiculous case.”

In this instance, Zimmerman needs a Johnny Cochran on his team. This is a public relations fight as much as it is a judicial trial.
