LA Times Exclusive: Five ATF Officials Found Responsible for Fast and Furious
The Los Angeles Times ^ | Monday, July 30, 2012 | Richard A. Serrano

Posted on 07/30/2012 6:18:30 PM PDT by kristinn

Republican congressional investigators have concluded that five senior ATF officials -- from the special agent-in-charge of the Phoenix field office to the top man in the bureau’s Washington headquarters -- are collectively responsible for the failed Fast and Furious gun-tracking operation that was “marred by missteps, poor judgments and inherently reckless strategy.”

The investigators, in a final report likely to be released later this week, also unearthed new evidence that agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Phoenix initially sought to hide from the Mexican government the crucial information that two Fast and Furious firearms were recovered after the brother of a Mexican state attorney general was killed there.

According to a copy of the report obtained Monday by The Times, the investigators said their findings are “the best information available as of now” about the flawed gun operation that last month led to Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. being found in contempt of Congress for failing to turn over subpoenaed documents.

Two more final reports, they said, will deal with “the devastating failure of supervision and leadership” at the Department of Justice and an “unprecedented obstruction of the [congressional] investigation by the highest levels of the Justice Department, including the attorney general himself.”

The first report did allege some Justice Department involvement, however, notably that Kenneth E. Melson, then acting ATF director, was made into a “scapegoat” for Fast and Furious after he told congressional Republicans his Justice Department supervisors “were doing more damage control than anything” else once Fast and Furious became public.

“My view is that the whole matter of the department’s response in this case was a disaster,” Melson told the investigators.

The was a dog and pony show which gave the far right conservatives something to hold on to while Zero and his crew ripped the Constitution to shreds.

And I thought I was cynical..

Issa's been very good on this and worked very hard, as has Rep. Trey Gowdy and others on the committee. I don't think they're corrupt.

they are reporting it

Yep. CBS has been on it pretty good for some time. The contempt citation ratcheted the issue up, and this attention in lamestream media is a good thing..

I posted the very same reply when this ‘investigation’ started. Nobody is going to jail, nobody is going to lose their federal pension benefits and U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry will still be dead when the investigation final report is issued.

The question to ask is, “How did the man become so cynical?”

Given time, I expect that you too may become just as cynical as I am. What successes have you seen from the GOP or Republican Party. Look at the sorry RINO the RNC shoved out in front of us and said This is your candidate for President.

We will probably end up with the majority of Obamacare just as it is. Expensive and inefficient. Those are two things only taxpayers recognize.

No, my attitude isn’t likely to change in the next four years.

Either Issa’s been sufficiently threatened to lay off Holder and The One, or King Barack’s found his price and he’s been bought off.

It seems as though if Issa reported today that he had obtained a death penalty conviction against a murderer that some freepers would call him a coward for not shooting the defendant dead in the courtroom.

Shot across the bow. These five will cooperate for a lesser sentence. Co-operative or do hard labor ;~)

That may be but I am not one of those. Holder and Obama and Napalitano have there hands all over this and they need to be held accountable. I am only suggesting that Issa got the guys driving the car in the drive by not the actual shooters

That's not what's going on.

What's going on is that Issa can't get the actual perps, so he's knowingly executing some fall-guys.

When the LA Times article came out, there was no mention of additional findings. It appeared this was all that was going to happen. It it was all, then it would have been a sell out.

Later Hot Air had an article stating that there were 2 other reports from the committee to be released.

This goes all the way to the White Hut. No one other than Obozo could have authorized this. Evidence of Inter-Agency coordination is the smoking gun. This was not a failed Sting Operation...

We’ve come accustomed to the lack of accountability.

So surprise us the resignations and indictments. Until then its just more of the same ol same ol.

Unfair analogy.

Issa is pulling minnows out of a pond full of sharks. Big damn deal.

Although it may not apply to mutual funds, with Republicans it is very much true. Past performance is (pretty much) a guarantee of future performance.

Until we actually see one of the real principal’s head on a pike I’m betting on history repeating itself *again*. I’m 60 years old, I’ve watched this same little drama with different actors many times before. I don’t believe in epiphanies, especially Republican ones.

I tend to agree with you. Not too long ago; months before the CONTEMPT vote, I myself was an Issa doubter. I have changed my mind and am now inclined to believe that when Issa is “quiet” he is not “surrendering,” he is RELOADING.
