Michael Tomasky on the (Possible) Coming Obama Landslide
The Daily Beast ^ | Aug 4, 2012 | Michael Tomasky

Liberals don't want to jinx it. It terrifies the right. And the press would prefer a nail-biter. But the fact is that finding Romney's path to victory is getting harder every day.

There's a secret lurking behind everything you're reading about the upcoming election, a secret that all political insiders know—or should—but few are talking about, most likely because it takes the drama out of the whole business. The secret is the electoral college, and the fact is that the more you look at it, the more you come to conclude that Mitt Romney has to draw an inside straight like you've never ever seen in a movie to win this thing. This is especially true now that it seems as if Pennsylvania isn't really up for grabs. Romney's paths to 270 are few.

I understand your anger but you have to realize that we have to work within the system. There have been third parties for decades and they will get 2-5% most of the time and spike to 15-20% on occasion. The only way to get there is to methodically remove the RINO’s from office and replace them with conservatives “that is the only way to do it”. The only way to do that is to convince the 51% of the American people that we are right. We can't do that if we just take our ball and go home. Romney wasn't even my second or third choice but he won the damn thing. We need to get Obama out and elect enough conservatives to hold Romneys’ feet to the fire. We are making a lot of progress we have the house and indications are we will get the Senate but we won't have sixty votes. In the end we just need someone in the Presidency who will sign the damn bills. I think Romney will at least do that!!

“Look, you can take Obama to task for not turning things around, and I’ll join you.”

Then do it. So far all you’ve done is bash George Bush. I challenge you to bash your hero Obama. Go ahead tell us how wonderful Obama is, how wonderful Obama has been and how wonderful Obama will be.

Tell us why we should vote for this communist again. We know you hate and despise Romney because he’s a RINO and you aren’t going to vote for him, but you haven’t told us why we should vote for your hero, Obama. Go ahead give it ur best shot. Convince all of us that we need to vote for ur boy Obama.....! Better yet tell us of all the wonderful things he has done for the country.

” Bush handed off a national disaster to Obama.”

Is this the best you have?? Are democratic talking points all you can come up with? NO, the disaster has been as is Obama. First and foremost Obama is a communist. He hates this country, he hates white people, he hates freedom, he hates captialism and he hates the American ideal. He is and has tried to destroy the very fabric of this country. He and his communist allies in the democrat party created the mess while they were in congress and when it all failed, they wanted to blame it all on Bush.

Does Bush deserve some of the blame? You bet. He could have vetoed some of those unAmerican bills but he chose not to. I fault him for that. But the banking crash that came about under Bush was not his fault. It was Obama, Clinton, Frank, Dodd, Kennedy and others that created the banking and mortage mess, not Bush.

Obama and other communist in the domcrat party used the talking point “social justice” to fool and trick simple minded people like you into believing that commuism is wonderful and great and that America should dump captialism and join the rest of the world in embracing the failed, tired, worn out theory, of commmunism. Communist like Obama and the communist in the deocratic party sold this “social justice” crap to the American public and they swallowed it hook, line, and sinker.

“And as much as Bush and his sports fans like to say Congress wouldn’t cooperate on a lending industry fix, he had a Republican House and Senate until 2006”

Having a simple majority means nothing, ever heard of filibuster? Bush couldn’t get the reforms through and you know it. You just want to Bash Bush and protect that communist in the White House. Oama, on the other hand, had super majorites in both the House and the Senate. Boy things are really great under Obama huh? He got every program he wanted passed, he got his tax bills passsed, he got his spending bills passed, he got all of his criminal regulations passed, the congress was at his beckon call and they rubber stamped everything he wanted. The Repubs could do NOTHING to stop anything, they had NO POWER...!

Go ahead tell and show us how much better things are under your new communist master Obama.

“I don’t give a damn what you say to me, you need to at least be honest with yourself.”

That statement is laughable. You bash Bush, Romney and other republicans but do all you can to defend, protect, and make excuses for the communist in the White House. How bout u being honest?

“Bush WAS responsible for what he handed off.”

Your ignornace is showing thru....! I guess the ole saying: “ignorance is bliss” is true...!

“If Obama had handed off that situation to Bush, are you telling me you would have attacked Bush for it being his fault? There’s no way in hell you would have done that, and you damn well know it.”

So far I haven’t seen you hold Obama responsible for anything, all you’ve done is bash republicans. You are goinig out of ur way to protect and make ecuses for Obama and his failed policies. Why?

If you don’t want to vote Romney, DON’T. But don’t come on here trying to defend your boy Obama by bashing Bush and other republicans. We know that they aren’t perfect and that they let us down more than once. I’m not ready to give up on this country and walk away and hand it over to the commuinst in the domocratic party though.

If you thank your little communst buddy in the White House is the answer, then that’s who u need to vote for. I choose to vote for the lesser of two evils since that seems to be the only viable option I have.

“I agree with that. But it’s another thing totally, to turn a blind eye to what our own team did.”

Turned a blind eye....???? What planet are you from? Conservative republicans bashed bushed regurlary and often for being a big spender. Conservative voters stayed home and didn’t vote in the last election because of the failures of George Bush. How do you think Obama won the election?

Its you and your ilk that are turning a blind eye. Obama’s father was communist, his mother was communist, his grandparents where communist, his best friend and mentor was communist, his best friends are commuist, his bests pal is a communist, all of his ideas are communist, everything he has presented to congress is a communist idea, but yet you and people like you in the press and the rest of America don’t think he’s communist. What flavor kool-aid are you folks drinking?

Another delusion of grandeur. These are the same idiots who were touting that ObamaIdiot would raise near a billion campaign dollars this go round....we see how that is panning out, huh? The silent majority has not spoken yet and I believe it will not be in ObamaIdiot’s favor come November. =.=

After a second term of Obama there WON’T be a country left to take back. Not to mention the Supreme Court, after Obama puts in a few more judges.

That doesn't matter anymore; the supreme court starting going rouge with Affirmative Actions and have completely become irrelevant with the sanctioning of Obama care. I personally am not worried about the Supreme Rubber Stamp anymore. This no longer affects my vote anymore.

My tag line expresses my position on Romney/Obama. There is a good chance that a motivated conservative Congress will seek action against Obama for his high crimes and misdemeanors. The likelihood of Obama being impeached and removed from office in his second term is high. Certainly the Tea Party will be highly motivated to mobilize to force the House and then the Senate to remove this criminal from office.
It is foolish to believe that Romney can win without conservative support. If he were to pull it out he would be a continuing embarrassment to patriots. Better the devil we can destroy than the Judas we must tolerate.

I was one who said they would NEVER vote for Romney, and that would still be true if we had not been betrayed by Justice Roberts. I will now vote for Romney and hope to GOD in heaven above we do NOT end up living in socialist country!!! If the senate and congress can put the reins on Romney we will start the path back to freedom, however it will take all of the years we have all been asleep!!!

Well put. My sentiments exactly. Bears repeating.

Numerous people stated before the primaries that they would not support Romney. Warning signs were abundant... and ignored. He has left such a trail of contradictory statements behind that the Obama PACs will have a field day withering his support with his own words.

What perfect rationalization - "numerous" people said they wouldm't support Romney....millions put him where he's at, but you're willing to cut your head off by allowing Obama 4 more more readily than you're willing to take a stubbed toe with Romney. Used to be a time when such "rationalization" would be shot down by the same folks now espousing it.

Because Conservatives are above all, practical. And, realistic. As opposed to say, Libertarians.

....I predict that if Romney is elected, he will immediately embrace every “moderate” position and will basically act like a Democrat...

... and I predict that theatrical Freepers displaying their ideological purity will go quiet for a week, after Romney wins. Which will be a blessing for us all.

Different time different election. First the electorate is very polarized. I believe most have made there minds up. Second Romney has comited political malpractice. I have made this comment before. Mittens is a lousy campaigner. I am not sure he could turn on a light bulb let alone the electorate. People loved Reagan he was plain spoken and always saw the good and communicated that. Does anyone think Mitt is capable of that? Say what you want about Obama and his gang but they are seasoned pros that understand politics. They have Mitt responding to them every day. Last item is where is Mitt spending money? Is he expanding the map? No, he is not. He is advertising in NV, CO, IA, NH, NC, VA, OH, Fl. This is a fact. So that means he has ceded MI, WI, PA. This means the electoral college is at 243-191 Obama. The remaining states Mitt is up barely in NC. Obama is up barely in Fl. The others are up more substantially for Obama. Mitt would need to turn almost all of the around. With his skills? So you can say Reagan came back but with the polorized nation without something catistrophic to Obama I am concentrating on down ballot. The senate is going to be hard. Maine is a flip. I think we gain in MO. MA is tight, ND is tight, Nevada AZ, MT, IN and VA are coin Flips right now. I am afraid Mitt could screw us there.

I don’t see how anyone whom calls himself a Conservative could ever vote for Romney.

I don't see how anyone who calls himself a Conservative could ever allow Obama to be re-elected. There is only one way to defeat obama, and that is to elect Romney PLUS a Conservative Republican supermajority in the Senate. This election is about defeating Socialism, Marxism, Communism. Don't ever forget it.

As always SF, a rational thought that I can latch on to! I can’t believe I have read all this dribble and have only seen a few here that have common sense! The narrow minded have captured this thread and seem to attack reasonable thoughts brought to the table. There are so many reasons not to allow this man back for 4 more years. I don’t care who runs against him, that person is better than what this man has done to the country. You will never see a Conservative back in office if this Prez gets another 4 years. PERIOD. Tell me how on earth are you going to go from Communist to Conservative by 2021? Dreaming I do believe!

You all are full of crap. There is no grand conspiracy to elect liberals. Most people [non-FR] see 0bama as Satan as you said and Romney as normal. Your Satan’s lieutenant comment is stupid.

If you’d rather have 0bama than Romney, you’re an idiot too. Stop whining and blaming others. If you want a conservative elected, than get busy and get one nominated in the primary. What ? You’re too lazy and would prefer to be a whining idiot? We all know that already.

The primary is over and YOU FAILED to get a conservative nominated. So quit blaming others and quit doing things to make our nominee lose.

Go to DU.

***... there seem to be many more posts bashing and hating Romney, than posts advocating defeating Obama ...

I wouldn't read too much into that. FR has always had its rabble of professional contrarians, who delight in undermining collective positivity. They idolize Reagan but you can be sure that, if the Intertubes had been around back then, they would have directed just as much venom at the Gipper.

That was Pauline Kael. She was not a columnist; she was a film critic who worked for the New Yorker for many years.
