As a neurosurgeon, I did not believe in the phenomenon of near-death experiences. I grew up in a scientific world, the son of a neurosurgeon. I followed my father’s path and became an academic neurosurgeon, teaching at Harvard Medical School and other universities. I understand what happens to the brain when people are near death, and I had always believed there were good scientific explanations for the heavenly out-of-body journeys described by those who narrowly escaped death.
... In the fall of 2008, however, after seven days in a coma during which the human part of my brain, the neocortex, was inactivated, I experienced something so profound that it gave me a scientific reason to believe in consciousness after death.

Reading his account of what he experienced he is trying to reach ones of a scientific mind and get them thinking. Getting them to think outside of their text book realm gets them searching for answers thus his clinical descriptions were needed. Getting them searching opens their minds and possibly their hearts for The Holy Spirit to work on reaching. In other words he is trying to reach some very clinical thinkers. More power to him.
His calling & message it seems isn't to be Brother Jones of the reformed First {insert name here} church where only a certain translation of The Bible and Brother Jones views of what The Bible says are allowed. Also notice the event did get him back to communicating with GOD & thinking about his relationship with GOD. It opened his eyes IOW. Something by his own admission he had not done previously. It's obvious he had a very life changing spiritual event. What he is saying is called TESTIMONY of what one witnesses. He's seems to be telling others of his profession Hey this is very real. Seeking answers isn't a bad thing ya know. GOD uses many people for His will and to His glory not just preachers standing at the pulpit.

Sorry, but its complete bunk. It belongs in the New Age section of the bookstore. Anyone who’s seriously studied the Bible would say the same. I don’t expect people to agree with me as I myself used to dabble in the New Age and Buddhism but after my conversion, but that was many years ago.

The comments at the end of the article are full of doubt. Not only doubt, but calling people idiots who believe in God.
My cardiologist said of my near death experience “There are those who will say there is a scientific explanation for what happened to you. I don’t believe it. I believe there was a power at work. I call it the “Doctor of all doctors”.
Then a shrink later told me it was lack of oxigen to the brain. This shrink, by the way, thinks Joe Biden is brilliant.
This neurosurgeon dismissed that sort of criticism because his cortex was completely non-functional (and he and his peers are competent to judge that). I have an open mind about it, although his experiences don't conform to my preconceptions.
Then I wasn't in the room.
I was surrounded by a warm golden glow, in clouds, and in the near distance was a man dressed in robes, appearing much as Jesus is commonly pictured.
I was startled, I knew I was very ill (the only time I have ever been in a hospital at that point), and I said, "If you are who I think you are, and you want me to come with you, I will." Then, (thinking of the then two-year-old granddaughter we were raising) said, "But if you don't mind there are some things I'd like to do first (raising that child)."
The man said, gently, "Go back, it is not yet your time."
Then I was back in the hospital room, and started coughing. All night I coughed up what can only be described as chunks of olive green gunk, and by morning I could breathe again. After one more night I was released from the hospital, to the amazement of the doctors and the respiratory techs who told me they were considering putting me on a respirator the night I heard them murmuring in the hall.
Now you can pooh-pooh that experience all you want, if you want, but I KNOW there is a there there.
I have studied the Bible. I also understand that GOD still deals with persons one on one. Some very devout persons with good reputations have had NDA's and saw events or things they would understand to be of Divine origin. I think Marty Robbins was one of them. Some persons at some point in their life GOD directly communicates with. That did not stop at the cross.
Persons see visions and people will still see visions & have dreams of Divine nature as foretold in The Bible. I found out for myself many years ago during a very troubled time in my life where answers as well as strength was needed. I got an answer. The answer was "It's going to be OK." A short message which gave me strength. That was the answer to laying on of hands for healing that was being asked for. The healing asked for did not happen. That was 27 years ago. Yet the calm and the peace I experienced was something I never knew before or since. I do admit at first I did not understand what the message meant. I do now.
I know very rational persons who have seen what can not be explained. My dad tells me of him being in bed one night. He was likely about 18 at the time. His dad walked in the room and sat down on the bed beside him then got up and left. His dad had been dead over a year.
What about this? My Mom saved my life one night thousands of miles away and no communication capabilities between us. This happened in the late 1970's. I was in the Navy & deployed in the MED Sea working on what was called a Liberty Launch. Basically a boat 35-50 ft long used to transport crewmembers from ship to shore.
I had been on duty almost 24 hours as an engineman when one morning we were tied up at the deckhouse at the ship waiting for the relief crew. I was leaning up against the windshield and seas were calm. I heard someone yell out my first name and JUMP. I dove down to the floor of the boat as the windshield hit the ladder and busted. One of several brushes with death I would have on the ship.
I didn't think anymore about it till we got back months later and dad picked me up at the airport. He asked me if I had a close call one night. I said I did one morning. He told me well your mom sat up in bed one night yelling your name & JUMP. Now add six hours from lets say 1:00am EST and that is morning about 6-7 am in the MED where I was.
You'll likely say Ah it was one of your shipmates. No in fact it wasn't for several reasons. The guys I was working with didn't even know my first name. They knew my last name and called me by a nickname given to me by my chief.
Are we shown things in advance? My dad had an overwhelming dream one night that bothered him but he didn't tell me till years later. He was dreaming about me and was feeling an overwhelming sorrow and grief for things which were to come to pass in my life.
Things that would change my life forever began to happen about 28 years ago. In about a seven month time frame my first wife died suddenly at a very young 23 of a heart attack. I took a job transfer a few miles away when I was able to go back to work. About three months later I would meet a woman whom I became good friends with. She was someone to talk too. After we knew each other about six months we were to meet to see a movie as it was our day off. She got to the mall, sat down inside, and collapsed to the floor. Do you believe GOD sends angels in our time of need? I do.
I carried her out to her car I had moved as close to the door as I could. While I was putting her in the car a cop asked me which hospital? He didn't say hold on an ambulance is coming he asked which hospital and I told him. He said follow close and turned lights and siren on. While I was driving she was dieing & giving me vivid details of what she was seeing. OH BTW her profession? She was a Nurses Assistant.
We got to the ER and he was gone I could not even find him to get his name. First night was touch and go and the doctors didn't have answers or much hope. Her arms and hands were folded tight to her chest. You pulled them down they went back up. A week passed and two preachers she knew visited her one evening. Both laid hands on her asking for her healing. I was overcome with a calm and peace I described and heard though not with my ears "It's going to be OK".
We married in the hospital two months later. Four more months after we married she came home as a quadriplegic. She got her arms and hands back mostly but not use of her legs. Events in about 9 year period took me into PTSD. When it hit so did a life long issue I had been dealing with become disabling. An issue involving my sensory processing system that left me with full strength but with seizure activity. Gee Dads dream after that was when he told me about it. I got over the PTSD. Both my wife and I are closer to GOD because of what we have been through together and endured with GOD's help.
I can look back and see doors opening at just the right places where events in our life took place. Had I not heard what I heard and it strengthened me? GOD provided for my needs. Yes GOD still talks to man. Man has the free will to listen and obey saying thy will be done or ignore.
No not everyone has these type of experiences. Why some do and some don't? That's GOD's business not mine. I don't believe it is wise to discount obvious miracles happening in a persons life when they produce good fruits and show GOD's Glory. When you are in trials and tribulations if He doesn't deliver you from it He is there with you in it to help you through.
Could well be that. Like Thomas what else would convince him but a being shown. GOD has plans for the man and it may involve more than a book. Doctors interact with many on a daily basis incuding patients they treat. A seed was planted obviously.
