The elevation Wednesday of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as the Roman Catholic Church’s 266th pope and the first from Latin America brought cheers across South America but also served as a reminder of the church’s role during the region’s dark days of dictatorship in the latter half of the 20th century.

More recently, Bergoglio has been known for his confrontations with Argentina’s last two presidents, the husband and wife team of Nestor and Cristina Kirchner.

Father Guido Sarducci was priceless. I remember one his Pope series where he was offering (in his classic accent holding a cigarette)”The new Popa soapa on a ropa”. Hilarious.

Now I feel better to report Don Novello is doing great.

And did you ever read the writings of “Lazlo Toth?” Also a scream!

Thanks for reminding me of Novello’s Lazlo Toth writings. Ahh yes, back when things were funny...

Actually, Millie (Ann Morgan Guilbert) is still alive. Only Morey Amsterdam of the main 5 has passed. Jerry Paris (as you cited) and Richard Deacon of the supporting cast have passed on. Carl Reiner, the creator and who played Alan Brady, is still with us.

Somewhat similar to Mary Tyler Moore’s Show. 43 years after its premiere and all are alive except for the great Ted Knight (although barring a miracle, Valerie Harper will probably pass this year).

Btw, kirchner was about the only person in Argentina who didn’t see Pope Francis come out on the balcony. I read that she was actually attending a memorial for Hugo Chavez at that time!

His stand on gay “marriage” is very well known, they just don’t like it. He’s extremely opposed and has really fought against it. However, he’s personally charitable and washed the feet of 12 AIDS sufferers last Holy Thursday. He also feels that children need both a mother and a father, and he has opposed gay adoptions. He’s been pretty outspoken about all these things.

That’s the only thing I haven’t loved about him....washing the feet of 12 AIDS patients. I KNOW, I KNOW, it’s the Christian thing to do, but it should have been 1 AIDS patient, if any and 11 other sick people who didn’t get their sickness thru ABNORMAL SICK SEX!!! JMHO

>>Actually, Millie (Ann Morgan Guilbert) is still alive.<<

Lord have great goodness! That is great news (I could have checked imdb but I thought I had done so.

>>although barring a miracle, Valerie Harper will probably pass this year<<

I read the news of her terminal illness last week. I pray I or any of us shall have the grace she has exhibited, not only in her waning moments (may they be many more than expected), but in her life. Her humor has never at the expense of others and it has never been never cynical (both my personal observations).

Thanks for the update and we are fortunate to have such groundbreaking showfolk with us....

>>Novello is still alive.<<

Hmm, still affected by the FR lag of weeks ago my friend?

On this thread we addressed that issue, stapled it, shredded it, took the shredded remains and mixed them with glue, decoupaged a lamp, sold the lamp on “Auction Kings,” split the profits, bought back said lamp from the upset ex-wife, shredded it again and then did a mournful ceremony for the remains on the cliffs above Pacific Palisades (don’t tell the EPA, DOE, DOA, ABC, etc).

Other than that, you are up to speed!

:)

I’m with you on Pinochet!

Someone very much like Pinochet (or Franco, or Fujimori) is what this nation may need after the Obamamayhem.

When one of our top ranked admirals states that ‘climate change’ is the top problem America faces, it’s time for change so we can have hope.

“but it should have been 1 AIDS patient, if any and 11 other sick people who didn’t get their sickness thru ABNORMAL SICK SEX!!! JMHO”

You may know more than I do that these 12 AIDS patients were all gay; however, as of now, I’ve not read anything that indicated that they were or were not. I do know that people get AIDs from blood transfusions, unclean needles, etc. and can then pass it on via ‘normal’ sex.

The pope went from Nazi-land to the land that Nazis fled to at the conclusion of WWII.

This article did not give me comfort about the new Pope’s “Social Justice” view. It seems the opposition to the Kirchners is based on Christina’s support of Gay Marriage. (I would also reckon he is not found of that corruption is still rampant under Christina.) However, the concern I have is the Church’s naivety that it can follow a path that on the one hand that supports economic Socialism and on another path be steadfast to cultural conservatism. History tells us the two are inseparable. I worry the new Pope’s Social Justice is even worse than past European Pope’s that embraced Socialism.

I have listen to hours and hours of Pope stuff, never heard Jesus once.

Don't hate or worship the Pope.

Never seen the word Pope in any Bible.

Jesus, YES

Next time you pray, Pray to Jesus.

During the “dirty war” many of the leftists (if they in fact were) were taken to the Naval Mechanics School on Av. Libertador in Buenos Aires. We heard that these detainees were sedated, then taken up in Navy helos and dropped in the delta of the River Plate, never to be seen again. My son, who is in BA this week Facebooked me, saying that building has been razed. Mike had some high school buds whose older brothers “disappeared.”
