Anthony Lewis, a former New York Times reporter and columnist whose work won two Pulitzer Prizes and transformed American legal journalism, died on Monday at his home in Cambridge, Mass. He was 85.

Mr. Lewis wrote several books, two of them classic accounts of landmark decisions of the Warren court, which he revered. Chief Justice Earl Warren led the Supreme Court from 1953 to 1969, corresponding almost precisely with Mr. Lewis’s years in Washington.

One of those books, “Gideon’s Trumpet,” concerned Gideon v. Wainwright, the 1963 decision that guaranteed lawyers to poor defendants charged with serious crimes. It has never been out of print since it was published in 1964.

“There must have been tens of thousands of college students who got it as a graduation gift before going off to law school,” said Yale Kamisar, an authority on criminal procedure who has taught at the University of Michigan and the University of San Diego.

It sounds like this assclown contributed mightily to America’s destruction.
Oh well rip.

“It sounds like this assclown contributed mightily to America’s destruction.”

He did not write Supreme Court decisions, he only wrote about Supreme Court decisions.

From wikipedia:

Noam Chomsky has said that Anthony Lewis is at "the far left of the spectrum" that is available in the mainstream media, and thus is useful in discovering the tacit assumptions that underlie all mainstream discussion."

I guess Noam would know.

“transformed American legal journalism”

NY Slimes doublespeak for “worked overtime to propagandize for the destruction of limited, constitutional government and traditional values.”

He did not write Supreme Court decisions, he only wrote about Supreme Court decisions.

Wrong. Read the article.
This liberal scumbag was a member of the RFK social circle and his columns were actually cited to SUPPORT liberal Warren court decisions.

Again, he was not a member of the Warren court and therefore did not write any of the liberal decisions of the Warren Court.

And while Gideon may have been a landmark decision, it was by no a means liberal decision.

His wife was the Chief Justice of the Massachusetts supreme court (it has a different name) when it ruled 4-3 to force same-sex marriage on the state of Massachusetts...she was part of the majority.

100% correct and liberals today are offering hosannas at his crypt. Not sure why any conservative would deny what this man was.

I doubt that the Constitution of of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts empowers the husband of the Chief Justice to vote on cases before the court.

And who appointed his wife to the Massachusetts Supreme Court?

This arrogant pr*ck wrote of Ronald Reagan: "What is the world to think when the greatest of powers is led by a man who applies to the most difficult human problem a simplistic theology?" -March 10, 1983

Lewis was an elitist's elitist and his 1963 Pulitzer did more to undermine my respect for the award than presentations to any of the fools who've received it since.

I hated the s.o.b. and let him know why. One of my proudest possessions is an outraged letter from His Haughtiness decrying the fact that little people like me could enjoy the same First Amendment rights as himself (that's not exactly what the letter says but that's what it means -- he didn't take kindly to criticism from the Groundlings.)

RIP Tony.

Just said a prayer for his soul; he's gonna need it.

Said one for mine, too - I'm not supposed to be glad about the death of another human being, but this news livened up my day.

His columns were a struggle to get through. In my younger days I thought the NYT was the be-all and end-all of jouralism and would read him. No I realize it was all gobbledy-gook.

Why on earth are you defending that liberal corpse? Lewis did his damage and now he’s gone, thankfully, before he could get into any more mischief. Maybe you’re on the wrong website?

Originally, you said the Lewis contributed to the destruction of America.

I simply pointed out that as a writer, he did not have the power to destroy the country as would a Justice on the Supreme Court.

Without that power, he is simply a writer and could not via judicial means hurt the country.

Did you have a problem with his view on Gideon?

Are you saying the Democrat "mainstream" newsrooms have not led the way in destroying the former America and that even now they don't prop up an African communist president?

I am much more concerned about the destruction of the country by elected politicians and unelected judges than I am old men who write for newspapers with steadily declining readerships.

Do you have an opinion on the Gideon decision?
