On the Beach, Men Are More Likely to Approach a Tattooed Woman

There are a lot of reasons to think twice before getting something permanently drawn on your body. One is that people still treat those with tattoos differently than those without. One recent study, for instance, looked at how men treat women with tattoos. What they found was that men are more likely to approach a woman with a tattoo and more likely to expect a date or sex with that woman.

Here’s how the study worked. Researchers had women place temporary tattoos on their lower backs and sent them to a well-known beach. The women were instructed to lay on the beach reading a book, staying on their stomachs so that the tattoo was visible. There were two parts to this study. In the first one, once the woman was in place, researchers watched and counted how many men approached her. In the second, once the woman assumed her position, a male researcher walked around the beach and asked random men whether they would be willing to “respond to three questions about a girl somewhere on the beach.” Every single man they approached said yes.

Here’s how the researchers summarized their results:

Two experiments were conducted. The first experiment showed that more men (N = 220) approached the tattooed confederates and that the mean latency of their approach was quicker. A second experiment showed that men (N = 440) estimated to have more chances to have a date and to have sex on the first date with tattooed confederates.

Interestingly, the study did refute an earlier finding about women with tattoos. In 2007, researchers from the University of Liverpool showed that men rated women with tattoos as physically less attractive, but sexually more promiscuous than those without. In this study, researchers found that physical attractiveness—as rated by the men on the beach who agreed to answer questions about the woman—wasn’t impacted by the tattoo. Another study in 2005 also found that tattoos don’t change attractiveness, but do negatively impact a person’s credibility, regardless of their gender.

So tattoos might not be bad for picking up dudes at the beach, but they might impact what those dudes think of you in the long run.

“Think before you ink”

After we came back from deployment my CO’s wife thought her best welcome home gift would be a trip to the PX tatoo parlor. While she was having dolphins tatted on her lower back, half the unit on their first trip to a real PX in a year walked past the parlor & later told the old man how great his wife looked getting inked. Cringeworthy.

I’m old fashioned (and old). Women in general should not get tats & beautiful women don’t need or want them for any reason. My lovely wife agrees.

It’s worse than slapping bumper stickers... because you can remove them. Even if you “remove” tats, you can still see them.

My theory is that tattooes alternate generations. The WWII people had them, so many of the late-boomers saw what tattoos look like after 10-20 years and decided not to get them. But now that that generation is dying out, the current young generation hasn’t seen that, and so are getting a bunch of tattoos. Give it 10 or 20 years, and no one will want them anymore.

And the neck rings!

So many ways for a woman to become unattractive, so little time.

I will never get it.
I imagine 80% of these tat’s with their DEEP SYMBOLIC MEANINGS were drunkenly picked out of a catalog within 10 minutes.
Yea, that chinese symbol is really deep man, wow i’m reallly impressed...

I’m surprised public skrools haven’t started a taxpayer-funded program called, Tats for Tarts!

African lip plates reminded me of something my wife pointed out recently. A waitress looked like she had hoop type earrings, maybe an inch in diameter. Wife said look closer. Turns out they were the ear lobe all stretched out by some sort of thing.

Yuck, very National Geographic, and she was not negro. I suspect the lip stretching and neck stretching are coming soon as the ghettoizing of the US continues.

Great money being spent for research.

No tattoos or body piercings here/just regular pierced ears because the clips are just too heavy for me. Most of these women do look freakish and a sign to say, pick that may say pick me up. That and the black lipstick the guys and the girls use is over the top.

You may be right. When all that hip, tight skin sags in about 20 years from now, those tats are gonna look like a bad collection of Rorschach tests.

I knew one college-age girl with a Chinese symbol for a tramp stamp. It had been applied upside down. She was still quite happy to show it off. In most ways she was a sweet, charming girl. What can you do?

All in all I would prefer bar codes.

I'm in college, and it seems like a strong majority of girls have a tat. Its usually something like a flower or butterfly or Chinese letter on their ankle or wrist, or below the belly-button -- don't usually see the classic tramp stamp.

One young lady seemed like a really nice girl, and I suppose she may very well be, but when in a bikini (her, not me) I couldn't help but notice she had a shooting star curving from her hip down to her...

As common sense becomes rarer and rarer, things like this increase.

“Tramp stamp”

Personally, I prefer the term

“A$$ Antlers”

Might be a good idea to verify what that Chinese character actually means...

One of the medics in a neighboring city goes and gets a tattoo listed in the catalog as “Big Bear” or whatever his nickname is. So he walks into the hospital and the Chinese doc starts laughing at him and quizzes him about it. Turns out the character meant “helpless fawn.”

LOL!
