John Bolton is a POS (vanity, obviously)
me

Posted on 08/30/2013 7:51:28 PM PDT by Leaning Right

Greta was in for O'Reilly tonight. One of her guests was John Bolton. Greta asked Bolton if Obama had the authority to strike Syria without Congressional approval. Bolton didn't hesitate for a second. He said Obama absolutely has that authority.

Ann Coulter says the same thing as John Bolton and she is a Constituional lawyer. It is not either of those two people’s fault that Americans elected an anti American idiot as our President.

The War Powers Act gives the President some power to act, but only if the US is faced with an imminent threat.

So here's a question. Did Grenada pose an imminent threat to the United States? Should Reagan have been impeached?

He has spent his entire life studying these matters. Asking Bolton whether we should institute military action is like asking an archaeologist whether the next big dig is a good idea. Of course it is. Except it’s a lot easier to do an archaeological dig than it is to be part of initiating a war, because of the huge resources needed to fight a war and the fact that in archaeological digs, nobody is shooting at you to prevent you from finishing the dig.

Well, if we strike Syria, we will face an imminent threat soon enough . . . from Russia!

yup, not seeing the clip i don't know the context of his statement but, i doubt he was cheering the boy on, simply trying to illuminate the terrain in which we currently find ourselves deployed...

I don’t know who is right on the question, but I’m amazed at the number Constitutional experts around here.

Matter of fact RWR was right. The Cubans in Grenada did pose an imminent threat to the United States citizens.

LOL! Like you really give a crap about my opinion/thoughts.

You have misunderstood my comment to you! I was not being sarcastic in the least. I really do want to hear your opinion after you have read the transcript.

Before I made my original post, I did a Google search to try to find the transcript of Greta's show. I wanted to include a direct quote from Bolton in my post.

But I couldn't find the transcript. I guess it was too early. I decided to post anyway because I know what I heard and I wanted to get the conversation started.

And, yes, I'm interested in your opinion once you have read the transcript. Because I do tend to overreact at times.

Bolton is maintaining the same position he espoused when Reagan, Bush and Bush II were in office.

Bolton is on most issues. He is wrong about this however. The president has no such authority. Do bear in mind, I think Bolton is opposed to action in Syria based on strategic factors.

If anything, Pooty Putin will use it as a reason to undermine us to a greater degree and consolidate their alliances that will block USA’s ventures potentially globally.

I watched and was amazed and repulsed by Bolton’s comment. Anyone who has any knowledge of the Constitution knows the POTUSA is the CinC when at war but it is Congress that has the sole authority/power to declare for a war. I am sure the Founding Fathers never anticipated an Obama type being CinC. Of course the Constitution has been prostituted by pretending ‘strikes’ are not war. This is where the service people can get killed but not be at war. What a farce of National action? Having served overseas in WWII and with my only brother killed on Okinawa I feel anger towards those persons that claim use of any of the military forces against any other another country with casualties on either side is not war, no matter how you paint the humanity of such actions. Of course Obama would not be the first to muddy the Constitution for such action.

a) The Constitutionality of the War Powers Act is debatable.
b) I believe he must show that American lives, an American Security Interest, or a Constitutional duty is at stake in order to invoke the WPA.
c) I don't know whether the specific provision of the Geneva Convention outlawing the use of chemical weapons requires the offense must occur during time of war. But if it does not -- flame away -- all signatories of the Convention are required to take join military action against the transgressor.

Striking Syria is a bad idea. But, under obligations created under treaties ratified by the Senate, he may actually have the authority. Bolton would know. I wouldn't.

Flame away.

Bolton has a good point. Just as in the Altercation of 1812, merely dropping bombs on someone’s capital is not an act of “war”. It’s just incredibly bad manners.
