NEW YORK (AP) -- McDonald's reported disappointing sales for its fourth quarter Thursday, as the world's largest hamburger chain saw fewer customers visit its restaurants.

The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company says global sales slipped 0.1 percent at established locations. In the U.S., where it recently revamped its Dollar Menu to include items that cost a little more, the figure fell 1.4 percent.

Could be that Burger King, Wendy’s and others also offer a dollar menu with much better food. I eat the “Jr. Cheeseburger” at .99 at Wendy’s all the time. It’s a great snack and when I remove the top bun it works for my low carb diet.

Will go to a Wendy’s or a local restraunt before I head to a McD’s.

Amazon is fine; they do a real good job with both customer service and giving small local merchants a venue for sales. WalMart has always been weak about selling made in USA merchandise, and that goes back decades when they were caught selling things as made in the USA that weren't.

McDonald's is a whole different category. They do provide nutritional, fresh food at a reasonable price. The problem is they aren't keeping up....no sweet potato fries, white yucky bread, drinks and dressings with corn syrup in them. McDonald's has the food technology knowledge to make whole grain breads and healthy vegetables that are tasty and nutritional, if they were so inclined. Instead, they keep pandering to people who like to stuff their faces with disgusting white potato fries and bread I wouldn't feed my dog. JMHO

Their food sucks.

And their new building design is even worse.

They look like re-purposed gas stations.

I worry incessantly about some McDonalds employee spitting on my hamburger

My fear has always been someone peeing in the pickle jar. I always order my burgers sans pickles.

Even at the cleanest, most efficiently run store where they rigorously endeavor to make the food appear just as in their pictorial menu (for our young leaders of the future), it largely tastes like cardboard filler with several kinds of dyes to get the desired food hues.

Couple that with the overwhelming belief I have that my drive through order would be spit in by some illegal or otherwise, and you have the reason why I haven’t had something from McDonalds for years.

“where I can watch them for the most part, making my food.”

Thats why we like Carabba’s. I also will only frequent bbq joints that have an open pit out front............Keeps em honest. :)

“Their food sucks.”

That and the attitude a lot of their minority employees seem to put out.

Well, when the salt sprinkled on their burger patties starts to rival the meat in weight, I’m sure it can’t be the quality of the food affecting sales...

A typical Mickey D customer is not going to order a whole-grain vegetarian burger with quinoa on the side. Not going to happen. And it shouldn’t. That kind of food should be served at home or in another kind of restaurant. People go to McDonald’s for a fun, unhealthy meal. I’m just sorry that so much of the flavor has gone out of their food.

And it’s none of my business if people want to stuff their faces. I leave that up to libs who want to control other people’s lives.

He's alright. I've met him in person. He's a good dude. I even saw a caring side to him.

Although, he's getting on up in years, so at this point, I think he'd qualify as a 'curmudgeon'. :D

Since you skipped over this point McDs and most of the other fast food chains used to have most of/those options, along with side salads and salad bars.
Lost money by the bucket full for years before it was pretty much phased out.
McDs knows how to market to it’s real audience not the fantasy or wishfully thought up ones, so I congratulate them for that.
As far as volume decline, increased costs=decreased sales, plus people now have less discretionary income.

Every time I have visited the inside of a McDonalds in recent years... I have felt in fear of my life practically. They all seem to be full of aggressive ... Obama voters. I’ll just take my business to chick-fil-a thank you very much.

(plus the fries aren’t as good as they used to be before they caved to the left over transfats)

Who wants to go to a restaurant where the help spits in the food because they aren’t getting paid $15 / hour. Time for some burger flipping robots. Dress the bots like clowns. The kids will love it.

They supposedly took a big hit after people learned that their pink slime hamburgers were made with dog food and windex.

Even though a lot of other places used/sold the same thing, MCDs took the biggest hit and did not make up for the loss in customers even after they made the claim to not use pink slime.

I'm not saying that's "the reason," or even a big reason, but as other posters have mentioned there's other better alternatives out there. And, with few discretionary dollars to spend......are you going to blow it on MCDs cardboard food, or somewhere that you can at least enjoy it a little bit?

It didn’t always suck. When the libs got them to ban lard on their wonderful fries, everything went down hill. Sad.

I trace it to when they stopped frying burgers on a grill. Now the burgers are barely meat, they're kept in plastic drawers, and apparently "cooked" via steam.

have you seen their dollar menu? last time I was in a store it was 2 or 3 items.

I find much better value for my money at other establishments.
