“I Don’t Think We Should be Tolerating Conservative Views”

Posted By Daniel Greenfield On February 17, 2014 @ 10:09 am In The Point | No Comments

Finally the left realizes that diversity is overratedwhen it includes the right.

9/11 Truther Cornel West and conservative Robert P. George visited Swarthmore. And you can guess which of these two men left-wing student activists had a problem with.

Robert George ‘77 and Cornel West’s collection on Monday, hosted by the Institute for the Liberal Arts, culminated a campus-wide discussion on the meaning of discourse at Swarthmore. The Princeton professors, known for their friendship despite of their strongly opposing viewpoints, intended to build community and discuss questions like “What does it mean to communicate across differences regarding what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong?’”

Prior to the event, many students voiced concerns with the College’s choice of speaker in George, who is known for his strong opposition to abortion, stem cell research, and gay marriage.

“What really bothered me is, the whole idea is that at a liberal arts college, we need to be hearing a diversity of opinion. I don’t think we should be tolerating conservative views because that dominant culture embeds these deep inequalities in our society. We should not be conceding to the dominant culture by saying that the so-called “progressive left” is marginalizing the conservative,” Erin Ching ‘16 said.

Wait… what?

Erin would like to marginalize conservative views, which somehow represent the “dominant culture” despite being marginalized, but she doesn’t want to concede to that dominant culture by saying that conservative views are being marginalized… even though they are.

Also she doesn’t think that she should be hearing a diversity of opinions at a liberal arts college.

Despite widespread disagreement with George’s views, students mostly agreed with Cornel West’s remarks, saying he was “wonderfully engaging,” “lovingly intelligent,” and “simply the best ever.”

How awesome is Cornel West? This awesome.

West calls himself a “progressive socialist” and has written that “Marxist thought is an indispensable tradition for freedom fighters.

In 2008 Senator Barack Obama named West to his presidential campaign’s Black Advisory Council. West is a great admirer of Obama’s former pastor and longtime spiritual mentor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

West is a close personal friend to Louis Farrakhan, among the most influential anti-Semites in America. West served as an advisor to Farrakhan’s 1995 “Million Man March.”

Simply the best ever.

Could trivialize the statement given the fact that Cornell West isn't a particularly significant individual. However he's echoing the words of Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat with legitimate Presidental (running) ambitions. Or maybe Andrew is channeling Cornell.

Well, the “dominant culture” is decidedly liberal, at least in film and television and the national Media. But, the Leftist, in his solipsism, cannot see that. He sees it as normal.

There’s a whole lot of particularly insignificant individuals that want to ‘change’ this Republic. I watched a crew (including Frances Piven) on CSpan this weekend discussing their collective book, “Imagine Living in A Socialist USA”.
It sent chills down my spine. It doesn’t take a majority as my German Mother often tells me.

West has made a career of being the affirmative action enfant terrible of the academic Marxist left. He has produced nothing of intellectual note despite years of Ivy League appointments. Like other "Black leaders" he is held in a certain regard by the left just for being there, and being black.

The Nazis and communists used to say this all of the time. Conservatives have always managed to survive in the long run.

proof that concepts like “Freedom of Speech” never could have originated from a liberal.

Looking at ONLY one side of things (WHICHEVER side!) qualifies as ‘propaganda’.

And that leftist insistence on “diversity of opinion” is a perversion of the truth.

Universities should require any speaker to score 1200 on an SAT test prior to booking them. Law schools should require speakers to score 175 on their LSAT prior to speaking.

Race and gender should not play any part.

That would thin down the herd of loud empty tin cans making a bunch of noise.

I don’t think conservatives should tolerate the leftists who currently occupy the white house, congress, and the courts, and I think that conservatives should make that dislike loud and clear. If the leftists don’t like our message, too effing bad.

I think we have to be very concerned about this. The tone has gone from 'agree to disagree' to conservatism has no place in our society. It is isn't widespread, yet, but the way they rammed Obamacare through, the way they say that Global Warming is settled - debate is being curtailed. I don't want to be alarmist and say that we will all be sent to re-education camps, but it sure looks like we are at the beginning of that road. Oh, but don't worry, it can't happen here.

it’s ok... I don’t tolerate progressives either.

progressives and their big govt push are the polar opposite to anyone that supports freedom and liberty.

it’s just that simple.

insisting conservatives should be shut out just shows the weakness of their view points.

And there are people out there, and here on FR, who actually think that college brats are conservatives?!?

College brats are indoctrinated from womb to dorm room as Leftists. No amount of Pollyana-talk will change the facts.

Don’t trust anyone under 30.

I love the message conveyed by your picture, but I have a little contention with the yellow one.

Given the recent liberal dialog on the lack of jobs in the current economy, and the latest spin on the ACA, I think the bottom sign should read: “Keine Arbeit Macht Frei”. (Please excuse my high school German from 40 years ago. Feel free to correct my grammar.)

I agree with your premise, but clearly you haven’t taken an SAT or an LSAT in a long time. Both tests are written by the progressive left to filter out conservative intellectual thought, as is modern liberal arts and law school education.

A conservative student must succeed in spite of these barriers. Nonetheless, even with the tests tilted in their favor, the affirmative action beneficiaries manage to score poorly.
