Starting next year, Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis will require potential employees to pass a drug test–detecting nicotine.
This so-called “job screening” will bar any applicants who smoke cigarettes, cigars, pipes, snuff, hookah, and even e-cigarettes from being eligible for employment. While the hospital already has a smoking ban on the premises and surrounding sidewalks, this policy forbids new employees from consuming tobacco anywhere, at any time.

however, I do NOT agree with this employer.
IF they think they should be controlling every aspect of my life...then they should have a hiring policy that states that ANY illness connected to cigarette will not be covered by their health insurance.
I hope you’re right. Its hard to be optimistic about Maryland. ;)
My mistake.
In the Army they weighed us after every P.T. test. Overweight soldiers who flunked the tape test were “put on Fat Boys’”, i.e., AR 600-9 which required 5-8 lbs weight loss each month. Those who failed to lose weight could be separated just like those who popped hot on urinalysis.
I guess what’s next is your personal doctor (excuse me, government lifestyle monitor & data collector) weighing you, testing you for tobacco use, and asking if you own guns.
Oh - that last one they are already doing. Good thing I’m retired, I suppose.

Decades ago, my wife bought me the famous Motorala Flip phone so she and our family could contact me if necessary. I was in sales at that time, and I never told my immediate boss or my company that I owned a cell phone. The company at the time refused to pay for cell phones. Key customers had the number with a “please never let my company know my number” from me. My immediate family had my number and a few key customers. That was it.
One day my manager was working with me, and we needed a signature from a key customer for a new contract. She was busy and wanted to review the contract and then she would call me after she reviewed and to sign the contract.
In my car, my boss said how is she going to call you. I said on my cell phone. He wanted to know how long I had my cell phone and why didn’t he know the number? My reply how long I owned a cell phone was my business. Since my wife bought the phone, and I paid for it’s monthly service package. No one in the company would get the number. Later the key customer called me and told me to come in for her signing.
He was ticked.
After I got my cell phone, I stopped answering my company voice mail at 5 pm and didn’t use voice mail until 8:30 am the next day. I never used voice mail during the weekends, holidays or while on vacation. It drove my managers nuts, but they were not willing to pay me overtime to use voice mail on my time.

Well, in a hospital, I think health issues doubly apply. I’ve been around dentists whose hands smell like smoke. Not good. And not very professional.
OK- didn’t know that but I don’t pay any attention to cnn or teddy/hanoi.
I do know about 4 years ago the San Antonio VA had al-jazeera suddenly appear on the cable, caused a huge wave of PISSED OFF Vets and it was gone the next day.

If you don’t like it, work elsewhere, but you are comparing apples and oranges. Much as I dislike ciggies, they are a legal substance, they are not illegal drugs.

Yes, if you smoke don't bother to apply...
but if you regularly or compulsively engage in dangerous sexual practices (like man on man), then you are welcomed.
After all that activity is protected by Maryland law. Its a right.
