Germany honors officers who tried to kill Hitler

BERLIN (AP) -- Germany on Sunday honored a group of Nazi-era officers who tried to kill Adolf Hitler 70 years ago. The plot - portrayed in films such as the 2008 Hollywood movie "Valkyrie" - helped establish a principle under which German soldiers today are encouraged to defy orders if they would result in a crime or violate human dignity.

In a somber ceremony, President Joachim Gauck called the July 20, 1944, bombing of Hitler's Wolf's Lair headquarters in Eastern Prussia a "significant day in German history" for showing the world that there were Germans who opposed the Nazi regime.

"It was from this legacy that the newly founded Federal Republic, once it belatedly recognized the significance of the military resistance, was able to draw legitimacy," Gauck said.

for showing the world that there were Germans who opposed the Nazi regime.

Without a doubt some Germans opposed the Nazis. Only problem was that there were heck of a lot more of 'em who thought Hitler was great.

Were they upset with Hitler because he was a homicidal maniac, or were they just upset because they thought he was causing Germany to lose the war?

Since Hitler coming to power in 1933, there were at least sixty (60) attempts on his life. The overwhelming majority of them were planned and carried out by members of the German Military High Command who believed that Germany would lose the war, that Hitler was insane and genocide was inhuman. The main problem was not killing Hitler...but, having a ruling infastructure in place to immediately take over the country!!! Most nutcase and tyrants and dictators, like Nero, Caligulam Hitler were murdered by military folks, that were close to them everyday, such as protective guards, etc.

Sadly, the 1930 German Jews were like Obama......oh.......Hitler/Putin would never do that to us (Genocide)!!! Thank God, Bibi, the IDF, the IAF and the Israeli Jews do not think that way today!!!

Yeah. Just as now, Hitler took other people's stuff and gave it to those who "deserved it."

The folks loved it and gave Hitler more power to take more people's stuff!"

The past several years have demonstrated just how easily any large “previously-liberty-enjoying” populace can “accept” Naziism or IslamoNaziism or Communism or Community Organizing or whatever

we now see that this acceptance or acquiesence is not limited to Germany

Took guts, von stauffenberg had immense balls to do what he did. If reality is anywhere near what was shown in Valkyrie, von Stauffenberg had brass balls.

I remember when I grew up in Germany during the mid 50s I used to listen to a German radio program after school that had with the German Resistance and von Stauffenberg. We also learned about it in History class when I was in 4th or 5th grade during 1954/55

Saved by the massive leg of the table. Oh, and the lack of gumption of any officer with a sidearm. Ideally, he'd have been assassinated prior to the invasion of Poland or even before the pact with Stalin.

They had the same problem we do, 50% or more cowardly sheep living among us. Distracted by whatever they do not want to get involved or draw attention, just live.
