Perdue Hung Chamber Support On Kingston

Former Dollar General CEO David Perdue narrowly beat Rep. Jack Kingston in the Georgia GOP primary runoff tonight, and in the days leading up to election day, he made a big push to tie the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's support for amnesty to Kingston, who had benefited from over $3 million in campaign spending from the lobby group.

"Kingston's largest backer...is 100 percent pro-amnesty. Kingston now owes them big," a brutal television ad from Perdue said.

After Eric Cantor's stunning primary loss, the Georgia race turned into a brawl over immigration, with both candidates trying to out-flank each other on their opposition to amnesty. For example, both signed a pledge from the anti-amnesty group FAIR, vowing opposition not just to providing citizenship to illegal aliens but also to increasing legal immigration.

Maybe I’m too much of a conspiracy theorist, but I sure suspected that the Chamber backed Kingston in the hope that Perdue would become the nominee.

I am not a fan of either Perdue or Kingston. In fact, I think the slate of candidates from which we had to choose was very sorely lacking. I was so disillusioned, that when I started out the door to go vote yesterday, I said “to hell with it” and went back inside.

While I do not believe that Perdue will hold true to his ‘no-amnesty’ pledge (he will equivocate in some way and play the word games appeaser RINOs do), I KNOW Kingston would have followed Boehner lock-step into certain capitulation. So in that regard, I’m happy to see a 21 year RINO kept from his promotion to the Senate Country Club, and not returned to the House. I am also happy the GOPe got their just rewards along with the Chamber of Commerce.

When I vote in November, I’ll pull the lever for him just to repudiate Michelle Martin (Nunn, hah!). She’s a bland little mouse with no charisma or plan beyond weak standard platitudes trading on her daddy’s name.

I read somewhere that Perdue was not for McConnell for leader. If it’s true, then that’s a point in his favor. We’ll see. Either way, I hope he wins over Nunn.

Over 20 years and no real change. It was time to send him home.

If more voters toss the good ole boys out of office, maybe we can start to turn things around.

Not really sure about your conspiracy. As the true numbers come out, it emerges that the CoC spent upwards of three million in a hard fought attempt to defeat Perdue. For them, it appeared to rise almost to the level of a grudge match. Early in the campaign, Perdue scheduled an hour long meeting with the CoC...which he stormed out on after ten minutes. Reports vary as to why he gave them such precipitate short shrift. He says the CoC wanted too much in exchange for their support. They deny it. At any rate, they went pedal to the metal for Kingston from that time onward.

Three million [in one state] is just too much to spend for a fake/don’t-throw-me-in-the-briar-patch campaign. Also, their attacks on Perdue were too brutal to be superficial/a deflection. They really and truly did want Kingston. That much is clear.

We shall see. I will give him the vote and the benefit of the doubt.....for now.

I also said the heck with it when passing the polling place yesterday, one that is usually busy but looked as if it was empty as I drove by.

I'm not in Georgia but from a distance I like seeing the Chamber of Commerce which lied last week saying it was never for amnesty, getting kicked in the teeth. Sure there are impurities in Perdue but this is another muscle flex by the “dead” TEA party and that is a good this. I also saw Barr went down as well. I debated him many years back - liked him and his wife personally but didn't care for his politics - glad to see him go down.

That sums up my view of the Kingston-Perdue race, as well. There was no compelling reason to vote for either one, so I didn't vote. Neither would have had a clear advantage over Michelle Nunn in the general election. It was a bitter campaign, and I just hope that all of the disappointed Kingston voters will show up in November to defeat Nunn.

The C.O.C. Support for Kingston is the reason I voted for Perdue. Kingston is to chummy with the south Georgia Farmers who want to keep on exploiting the Mexican farm workers. Georgia is FULL of illegal aliens and we have got to do something about them. They have flooded our schools and hospitals. Our jails are full of them. Its time for somebody to send those folks home!

Barr lost by a huge margin. I suspect that many Republican voters remembered his defection to the Libertarian party a few years ago, and just didn’t trust him.

Guenevere, glad to help.

southernwithanattitude, you nailed it. A few years ago I wrote to Kingston, my Rep, and expressed urgent concerns about the flood of illegals. He wrote back & very glibly sympathized with me, & then segued into a full throated defense of cheap labor to meet the needs of GA’s agricultural community. You could tell a mile away which side of the issue he came down on. It was aggravating. I thought about writing him back & explaining that ‘cheap’ labor isn’t cheap to those of us who are paying the price in higher taxes, crowded schools & Emergency Rooms, a rise in crime, & an ever increasingly bloated earned-income-tax credit burden—most of which gets mailed back to S. America.

I didn’t follow up, though. It was clear Kingston was listening to his agricultural Big Donor buddies, & not to me.

As someone who has known Jack since his first political run I can say, you are wrong.

The farmers down here want illegals and the farmers down here are Jack’s bread and butter.

Jack was all in on any kind of amnesty or worker’s visa that he could get. Didn’t matter to him.

“I read somewhere that Perdue was not for McConnell for leader. If it’s true, then that’s a point in his favor.”

He told me that personally.

I voted against Kingston because if you aren’t willing to get rid of the incumbents in your own yard then what good are you.

I voted for Perdue, but I also plan on backing whoever runs against Perdue next time.

I’m not BS-ing when I say I’m tired of incumbent professional politicians. I only got this way about 3 years ago - was typically an incumbent kind of guy.

This guy gets it. ^^

And that is why South GA voted overwhelmingly for Jack. S.GA. knows a pro-amnesty man when they see one and they like it.

Too many people don’t get it that S.GA. is a Democrat stronghold temporarily masquerading as a Republican area.

Just wait until a strong, semi-conservative Democrat runs for Governor or Senator as a social liberal and a fiscal hawk and it will all come out.

True GA conservatives all live North of Atlanta.

Well this “go with who you know” business is how we got Jim Jeffords, who betrayed republicans right after getting reelected, Arlen Specter, who became a democrat, Lincoln Chafee, became a democrat, John Warner, endorsed a democrat this year, Richard Lugar, endorsed a democrat this year, Orrin Hatch, helps out democrats when he’s not up for reelection, and on and on.

Rotation in office is one of the keys to liberty. I wouldn’t mind seeing a number for single term senators for a while.

20 years of single-term politicians down to the local county commissioners would make my day... er, double-decade.

...Or “1 score.”

Well time will tell. I have zero faith in Perdue. We elected another “businessman” Johnny Isakson a few years ago and he has been terrible just like Saxby Chambliss. I expect Perdue to vote lockstep with Mitch McConnell and the GOP leadership in the Senate. I hope I’m wrong.
