Has anyone read the book "A Rise to Rebellion"? If so, thoughts?

Posted on 08/13/2014 12:16:33 PM PDT by Maceman

My high school-aged daughter has been assigned this book for a summer reading assignment.

I'm interested in some opinions about it from anyone who has read it.

Thanks.

If it’s a public school assignment I would have no doubt it’s Commie indoctrination book.

Is this it?

Jeff Shaara dazzled readers with his bestselling novels Gods and Generals, The Last Full Measure, and Gone for Soldiers. Now the acclaimed author who illuminated the Civil War and the Mexican-American War brilliantly brings to life the American Revolution, creating a superb saga of the men who helped to forge the destiny of a nation.

In 1770, the fuse of revolution is lit by a fateful command -- "Fire!" -- as England's peacekeeping mission ignites into the Boston Massacre. The senseless killing of civilians leads to a tumultuous trial in which lawyer John Adams must defend the very enemy who has assaulted and abused the laws he holds sacred.

Every one of Jeff Shaara’s books is excellent. I have read almost all of them. Rise to Rebellion is on my wish list.

I read it, in fact, I’ve read all of Shaara’s historical novels, and I like all of them. It might be enlightening for you to read the reviews on Amazon.

Shaara has done his homework, and humanizes his characters, who most of only know as names in textbooks, or from pictures on money. He can put the reader on the battlefield with his characters, so there will be some violence, but his books are about wars and battles. I don’t think there is anything that you wouldn’t want your daughter to be reading.

By Jeff Shaara? He’s a great author. He and his father wrote the Civil War trilogy which included Gods and Generals. It’s about the Revolutionary War and it sounds good.

If it is the Jeff Shaara book, it is very good. There is a sequel to it about the Revolutionary war and it is good read also. He does a good job of incorporating historical events into a fiction that is an interesting read. I hope she enjoy. Quite surprised a school is assigning this.

“England’s peacekeeping mission”??? There’s keeping the peace, and then there’s imposing subjugation.

May make for a good lesson in euphemisms.

I'm sure the British called it a "peacekeeping mission."

A good writer is one who trusts the intelligence of his reader and lets the reader formulate his/her own conclusions.

A boring writer spells everything out and leaves nothing to chance.

I remember reading about the “Boston Massacre” in 6th grade history. I must have been the only one but I actually thought the British Soldiers were innocent and the Americans guilty.

He and his father got me hook again on the civil war.

If you have seen the epic movie ‘Gettysburg’, it was based on one of his books.

I highly recommend ALL of his books.

Hats off to the teacher on this selection.

If this is the book in question, then you are in luck. it is NOT leftist propaganda.

It is an outstanding, well-written and exciting work of historical fiction covering the time leading up to the American Revolution.
