'I thought my e-cigarette was a miracle. Turns out, I was smoking the equivalent of 40-a-day'
The Telegraph ^ | Aug 27, 2014 | Rachael Lloyd

When Rachael Lloyd took up vaping, she thought she'd stumbled across a miracle alternative to smoking. Little did she know, her e-cigarette wasn't quite as guilt-free as she'd assumed - as the World Health Organisation is now starting to realise

...

Two days later I scurried to my doctor for a second opinion. She asked exactly how much vapour I was consuming per hour. “Up to forty inhalations an hour on a particularly stressful day,” I admitted. According to her, I was inhaling the equivalent of 40 fags a day – at least in terms of nicotine. There was no doubt about it, I was a vape addict.

nicotine in its purest form will kill on contact I hear

What is the purest form of nicotine? The tobacco leaf..........I suspect you have too much wax in your ears.

I recently spent a day and a half working on a car with a guy...who was vaping on a continuous basis. He was easily doing more than 40 inhales and hour. He put different flavors through it...some smelled pretty good. I know nicotine isn’t jim-dandy for your health...but I never really thought about the implications. Frankly, most people I know who vape do it fairly constantly...I thought that was how you were supposed to do it.

This guy was gainfully employed and a functioning member of society...so I say let him kill himself if he wants to, as long as its not on my dime.

Side note - he was stressed out because his brother had just died. He was a huffer. His chemical of choice - toluene! Insane. Hopefully vaping doesn’t lead to huffing for this guy.

“My understanding is that it isn’t the nicotine that is the carcinogen”, No nicotine is not a “carcinogen”, it’s a POISON!

The health problems of smoking are associated very largely, though not exclusively, with the byproducts of combustion, not with the nicotine as such.

Yep. But e-cigs have a huge bullseye on them right now. Story after story are coming out alleging the "potential" health consequences of vaping."Potential" because few are actually studying it.

Personally, I think governments are starting to seriously sweat the loss of tax revenue if too many people give up smoking and switch over to e-cigarettes. They're getting very nervous. Lots of stuff out there is funded by smokers.

So the idea of two-pack-a-day smokers is cause for a WHO five alarm fret? Wow.

I remember the days when a faggot was a bundle of sticks. And everyone could be happy and gay.

You posted the article, how were we supposed to beat you here :-)

BTW you would only be a nanny-stater if you want the government to do something about people choosing e-cigs. Regarding the article, there does seem to be some fear mongering on the part of the WHO but I would think it common sense that consuming high doses of nicotine is likely bad for you.

So is water if you drink too much of it.

The huffing and puffing about e-cigarettes reminds me of what happens every few years when they try to loosen gambling laws in California. You’ll have anti-gambling ad campaigns by “Citizens for Family Values” that turn out to be funded by Las Vegas casinos.

1000 mg of pure nicotine is indeed lethal.

Sooner or later, teenagers are going to start abusing the nicotine that goes in the vape pens, once they figure out how powerful it is. I imagine sticking a drop under your tongue would make the blood flow.

So would you be willing for the gov’t to use deadly force to prevent people from smoking?

Before I quit in 2000, I was typically smoking a pack and a half of Winstons a day.

[ In before the e-cig vendors, addicts, smokers, pot heads and libertarians show up to call me a nanny-stater for daring to post an article pointing out the health dangers. ]

Oh E-cigs are definately dangerous, but so is getting in your car and driving or drinking a soda, etc etc....

The question is how much safer/more dangerous are they from conventional smoking...

I’ve smoked both analogs and digitals.

I’ve also mixed my own juice with varying levels of success.

e-cigs may be harmful (although, as an aside, you can get them without nicotine) in some ways, but exactly how and to what degree is currently a matter of conjecture.

Analogs are definitely and demonstrably harmful in a myriad of ways.

I’m off both of them now but, IMHO, regular cigarettes are orders of magnitude more unhealthy than a reputable e-cigarette.

No nicotine is not a “carcinogen”, it’s a POISON!

So is water if you drink too much of it.

So is caffine!!!

Nicoteen and Caffine are both chemicals PLANTS use as INSECTICIDES!!!

But us mammals enjoy the effects of both of them..

“..so I say let him kill himself if he wants to, as long as its not on my dime.”

I know exactly how you feel. Every time I hear of someone being injured from risky behavior I say the same thing. Mountain climbing.skiing, participating in contact sports, that type of thing. Even joggers who end up with bad knees. I don’t want that on my dime either.

.

"I’m off both of them now but, IMHO, regular cigarettes are orders of magnitude more unhealthy than a reputable e-cigarette."

I suspect e-cigs are safer too, but only if you vape no more than you would smoke.

If you increase your vaping like the woman who wrote this article did, because you think they are safer, you could find that you are poisoning yourself at a much faster rate than you ever expected.
