None of this is supposed to be happening at all. Better Together is supported by every major media outlet in Scotland as well as in London. It has the full research resources of the British government and the backing of big business. Yet there now seems to be an irresistible momentum towards yes.
This week saw polls showing a massive eight-point swing to yes in the last month alone, with women and Labour voters leading the way. Photos of people queueing up to register to vote in Glasgow have been circulating. Maybe they were people queueing up to defend the union? Aye, right.
Here are five reasons why yes is winning.

At present I don’t even know if restoring Scots royalty would fix that mucked up mess.
They just want the Queen’s Castle back and export duties on Haggis lifted./s
Scottish socialists smell victory. And it helps the UK is ruled by the Tories.
Europe may soon have a new country.
I think the bottom line is even simpler. The Scots want their country back from the English.
Sure, there are any number of scoundrels who want to grab hold of it for themselves, but that is always the case. Once Scotland is “its own man”, then the real democratic fighting can begin.
Do not underestimate the power of “feeling owned” that the Scots have had since about the beginning of the 18th Century.
“Scotland subsequently entered into a political union with England on 1 May 1707 to create a single Kingdom of Great Britain. This union resulted from the Treaty of Union agreed in 1706 and enacted by the twin Acts of Union passed by the Parliaments of both countries, despite popular opposition and anti-union riots in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and elsewhere.”
What could go wrong?
UK not socialist enough for them?
AT least if the country goes socialist they voted on it by themselves.
I’m partially of Scottish blood but if they vote yes I’ll never set foot in Scotland again and will boycott all items made there.
I can appreciate the land of my father’s wanting to be free, but if they are going to be free and not enter into another type of enslavement, they are going to have to go back to their Presbyterian roots.
If that's the 'no' crowd, I can understand someone leaning toward 'yes'.
If they aren’t overthrowing the monarchy that would create an interesting situation - I believe she is still the rightful monarch over Scotland through the bloodline as both lines were united - so it would be again a separate Royal House, but with the same person on the throne.
Their country, their social experiment. Either way it goes I wish them the best. The power of self-determination includes the power to make mistakes. Look, for example, how the last two U.S. Presidential elections turned out.
But what' going to happen to the Stone of Scone?
By 2030, America will be having the same election.
Maybe Stephen Harper, currently PM of Canada, will agree to be the first President of “Conservative USA.”
