Smith and Wesson model 39’ I believe... LOVE that gun!

Well, they should be able to figure out who the agent was.
In very close proximity to that lake is an area known as Val Verde. Back in the day (20-25 years ago) it was a hotbed for illegals and mexican gangs. It was pretty well known back then if you were of the pale persuasion, you stayed out of Val Verde. I don’t know what it is like today however.

A little bit of reading tells the story. The agent is alive and well.
To: BenLurkin
Wow, he really did lose it in a boating accident.

Gentlemen, we now have confirmed precedent of firearms being lost in boating accidents.

Probably a model 59. The 39 had a bad reputation for malfunctioning.

That’s not an ATF badge. ATF ceased to be part of the Treasury Dept. when DHS was created back in 2002, and ATF was put under the DOJ.
There remains a section within Treasury for collection of federal taxes on alcohol and tobacco, known as Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

Oh, okay, I just re-read the story and realized that the boating incident happened in 1992, so it makes sense now.

I never could figure that, my mdl59 will digest anything. The mdl39 uses an identical slide and shares a lot of other stuff.

And frames cracking. Too bad, I liked the 39. But sent 2 of them back for frames cracking.

I bought a model 22-A maybe a year ago. It was actually built without an extractor!
I shot it several times before it jammed even without an extractor. I will say their service was excellent. I had it back within 10 days this time with an extractor.
It has never failed since and is pretty accurate too.

Spray a little WD-40 on it and it will be good as new!;-D

My experience with the 39's was back around 83 or 84. Right about the time S&W was entering the 9mm auto market.
Their service department handled things well, but from their comments, and the comments of several PD armorers I spoke with, this was a common problem with these model 39s.
S&W went through a lot of 'trial and error' back then with their new 9mm autos.
Interesting times.
